Multiple fecal samples were collected from growing Angus bulls (264 to 419 kg of BW, 3.0 to 11.4 kg/d of DMI) to predict DMI of a corn-silage-based diet. Contemporaneous digestion trials were conducted with the same diet in 12 steers in yr 1 to 3 and bulls in yr 4. Near-infrared spectra from fecal samples (n = 730 from 282 growing bulls, n = 240 from 36 steers and 12 bulls for digestion trials) were obtained from dried and ground fecal samples, and modified partial least squares regression was used to develop equations to predict DMI and DM digestibility (DMD). Although mean predicted DMI of the growing bulls (7.52 ± 0.04 kg/d or 22.4 ± 0.1 g/kg of BW) was within 2% of mean measured DMI (7.63 ± 0.06 kg/d or 22.7 ± 0.1 g/kg of BW), the mean of paired differences within samples (0.11 ± 0.04 kg/d or 0.3 ± 0.1 g/kg of BW) was greater (P < 0.01) than zero. Measured DMD (72.3 ± 0.5%) was identical (P < 0.97) to predicted DMD (72.3 ± 0.5%), and DMD for bulls in the digestion trial did not differ (P < 0.27) from DMD for steers. Prediction of intake requires incorporation of some measured values from the set of fecal samples to be predicted. Lack of similarity between spectra of fecal grab samples from the growing bulls and daily fecal collection of steers and bulls in the digestion trials in this study indicates the need for further verification before prediction of DMD with fecal grab samples.  相似文献

A stallion presenting for surgical correction of an acquired inguinal hernia was also diagnosed with a nephrosplenic entrapment (NSE) intraoperatively. Surgical intervention resulted in a successful outcome. To date, these conditions have not been reported to occur simultaneously.  相似文献

Bald thigh syndrome (BTS) is a disease limited to Greyhound dogs. It is characterized clinically and grossly by bilateral hair loss on the lateral and caudal thighs. The cause of BTS is unknown but may be associated with hypothyroidism or hyperadrenocorticism. Samples of skin, thyroid glands, and adrenal glands from 43 Greyhound dogs with BTS were examined microscopically. Microscopic changes were characterized by dilatation of follicular infundibula, presence of catagen follicles and epidermal hyperplasia. Changes in the skin from these Greyhound dogs suggest an endocrinopathy as the cause; however, we were unable to confirm which one.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to determine the ability of Doppler ultrasound to detect changes in femoral blood flow during pharmacologic manipulation of arterial blood pressure. Doppler ultrasonography was performed in the femoral vessels of six halothane-anesthetized horses before and during administration of phenylephrine HCI and sodium nitroprusside. The time-averaged mean velocity and volumetric flow were calculated. The contour of the velocity waveform was assessed, and the early diastolic deceleration slope (EDDS) and pulsatility index (PI) were calculated. Administration of phenylephrine HCI resulted in increased mean aortic blood pressure (MABP) by 40% (29.3-53.0%). This caused significant decrease in cardiac output (26.8 to 13.5 l/min), femoral arterial velocity (left artery 7.20 to 4.00 cm/s; right artery 5.01 to 3.39 cm/s) and volumetric flow (left artery 556 to 221 ml/min; right artery 397 to 193 ml/min) in the femoral vessels and significant increase in systemic vascular resistance (163 to 433 dyn-s/cm5), EDDS (1a: 285 to 468: ra: 250 to 481) and PI (1a: 9.38 to 20.4; ra 17.1 to 29.1). Administration of sodium nitroprusside resulted in a decreased MABP of 27.2% (22.5-33%). This increased cardiac output (20.8 to 32.4 L/min), however, no significant changes were observed in femoral blood flow. Despite obvious changes in the waveform contour, no significant change occurred in EDDS or PI. These results suggest that Doppler ultrasound may be useful for measuring femoral blood flow in anesthetized horses. However, waveform analysis appears to be limited when multiple changes occur in central and peripheral haemodynamics.  相似文献

White line disease (WLD) is a significant pathological condition that affects the equine hoof. White line disease continues to frustrate veterinarians and farriers due to the diversity regarding the aetiology, diagnosis and especially treatment. Furthermore, WLD lacks a definitive definition as the disease becomes apparent only when the hoof wall is compromised with an extensive separation, a hoof capsule distortion is present or when lameness exists. Clinical signs can range from a minor hoof wall separation to an extensive disruption of the external laminar bond resulting in displacement of the distal phalanx within the hoof capsule. There has been a myriad of treatments and topical preparations proposed for treating WLD, but most remain controversial with few having any scientific documentation or evidence of efficacy. This review of WLD is based on the sparse information available in the veterinary literature, the large number of WLD cases treated successfully in the authors’ combined practices using conventional farriery and the relevant questions that hopefully can be answered in the future.  相似文献

Samples of digesta from the ruminal upper strata (RUS) and feces (F) were taken from four ruminally cannulated steers fed Coastal bermudagrass hay (78% NDF) in the long form to evaluate the effects of feeding level and time postfeeding on particle breakdown. The experimental design was a 4 x 4 Latin square with 18-d periods. Treatments based on previous intakes were set at 50, 70, 90 and 110% (3.1, 4.4, 5.5 and 6.7 kg/d, respectively) of feed consumed per animal and fed at 12-h intervals. Samples were taken at 2, 6 and 12h postfeeding and wet-sieved. Dry matter weight distribution of total recovered particles was used to partition RUS and F digesta among percentages of large (greater than 4.0 mm), medium (greater than 4.0 and less than or equal to 1.0 mm), small (less than 1.0 and greater than or eual to .125 mm) and fine (less than .125 and greater than or equal to .0027 mm) particles. With increasing feeding level, the percentage of medium RUS particles increased linearly (P less than .02), whereas the percentage of fine RUS particles decreased linearly (P less than .01). Increased time postfeeding resulted in a linear decrease in the percentage of large RUS particles (P less than .01), a linear increase in the percentage of small RUS particles (P less than .01) and in a quadratic increase in the percentage of fine RUS particles (P less than .01). Percentage of medium RUS particles remained unchanged. Increasing feeding level resulted in linear increases in mean RUS (P less than .01) and F (P less than .02) particle sizes. Percentages of RUS and F material passing through a 1.0-mm sieve averaged 52.8 and 88.8%, respectively. Animal-to-animal variation in proportions of RUS and mixed reticuloruminal particles was not entirely removed by rumination and was still reflected in the percentages of F particles. Factors such as particle entrapment in the fiber mat, reticular sedimentation, changes in specific gravity, swelling and hydration capacity, reticuloruminal motility and amount of digesta exiting per contraction appear to be more important than particle size reduction in the regulation of the passage of digesta from the reticulorumen.  相似文献
