Abstract: The Se San is an important tributary river basin of the Mekong. In 1993, Vietnam began building the Yali Falls Dam 80 kilometres upstream of the point at which this westward flowing river enters Cambodia. Ninety indigenous communities along the Se San River in two provinces of north‐eastern Cambodia have been impacted severely by flooding, and a dramatically altered hydrological regime that affects fisheries and all other aspects of livelihood, such as river bank agriculture. Since 2000, when the first turbines were commissioned, the affected communities have been increasingly vocal regarding the impacts of Yali and the plans for several more dams on upper reaches of the river. A complex set of actors including non‐governmental organisations, village, district and provincial authorities, national committees in Cambodia and Vietnam, the Mekong River Commission and a range of international players have become involved in a two‐track process, which has nevertheless allowed little space for negotiation over the Se San River on the part of those most directly affected. This case has fundamental implications for governance and conflict management in the Mekong and more widely. The Australian Mekong Resource Centre has been working with local actors to document the Se San case as part of an international project on River Basin Management: a negotiated approach, in support of six cases that involve up‐scaling of grassroots river basin initiatives in Africa, Latin America and Asia. Growth and photosynthetic performance were analyzed in alloplasmic tomato at a high- (25/17 °C; HTR) and low-temperature regime (12/6 °C; LTR) in order to establish the role of cytoplasmic variation on low-temperature tolerance of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.). Four alloplasmic tomato lines, containing the nuclear genome of tomato and the plastome of L. hirsutum LA 1777 Humb. & Bonpl., an accession collected at high-altitude in Peru, were reciprocally crossed with 11 tomato entries
with a high inbreeding level and a wide genetic variation, resulting in a set of 44 reciprocal crosses. Irrespective of growth
temperature, alloplasmic families with alien chloroplasts of L. hirsutum (h) were on average characterized by a high shoot biomass, a large leaf area, and a low specific leaf area in comparison with
their euplasmic counterparts. These results do not directly point to an advantageous effect of h-chloroplasts on biomass accumulation at low temperature but rather towards a small general beneficial effect on growth and/or
distribution of assimilates. Significant chloroplast-related differences in photosynthetic performance, however, were not
detected at both temperature regimes, indicating that h-chloroplasts can properly function in a variable nuclear background of L. esculentum. It is concluded that chloroplast substitution is not an effective method for breeding tomato plants with improved low-temperature
tolerance.

The numbers and pattern of distribution of dark-bellied brent geese Branta b. bernicla feeding inland around Chichester and Pagham Harbours, West Sussex in winter 1979/80 are described.A maximum of 11,000 birds fed inland. Taking the winter as a whole, 70% fed within 200 m of the coast. 68% of inland-feeding birds occurred on grass. This was partly influenced by deliberate scaring of the geese from cereals. 14% of the available area of grass around Chichester was used by geese but only 6% was heavily grazed. Of the area of cereals, 13% was used with 4% heavily grazed.Unless disturbed, the brent geese usually remained inland for most of the day, regardless of the state of the tide, returning to roost overnight on intertidal areas. The more uniformly distributed food supply in fields enabled the geese to feed in larger, more compact flocks than they could do on the estuary.The provision of grassland refuges is suggested as a means of alleviating conflict with agriculture. For Chichester Harbour up to five refuge areas may be required where the geese can feed undisturbed. Each refuge should not only provide the food requirements of the geese but be large enough to provide a buffer against human disturbance on surrounding land. The total refuge area should probably be not less than about 400 ha, on which many of the normal farming practices can continue. Refuges should be situated adjacent to the coast and the grass sward needs to be closely grazed by livestock or mown in the summer to provide a suitable short sward for the wintering geese. 相似文献

The effect of land use (forest and grassland) on the deposition and mobility of Pb and Cd has been studied by extraction with 1M HCl, 1M NH4Ac/HAc and 1M NH4Ac. The soils were described pedologically and the main physical and chemical parameters were determined. The Pb concentration in the A horizon is higher in the profile under forest than in the profile under grassland. We assign this difference to the filter action of the forest. The Cd concentration is highest in the grassland profile because the forest soil is more degraded and Cd is leached to a higher degree in this soil. Both metals are more mobile (easier to extract) in the forest because the forest soil is most acidic, and because a greater part is bound to organic compounds (humic and fulvic acids) which are more abundant in the forest than in the grassland. The concentrations of Pb and Cd in the A horizons are 26 ppm and 0.1 ppm under the forest and 9 ppm and 0.2 ppm under grassland, respectively. 相似文献

The African black oystercatcher Haematopus moquini is endemic to southern Africa and occurs as a breeding species between Seal Island, South West Africa/Namibia and Mazeppa Bay, Transkei. Vagrants outside this area are rare further north than the Hoanib Estuary, South West Africa/Namibia and further east than Transkei. The present adult population is estimated to be 4781 birds of which 53% are found in the southwestern Cape Province, South Africa. Offshore islands support 29% of the world population and are identified as important localities for African black oystercatchers with a high breeding production. These birds face threats from human disturbance, expecially from off-road vehicles on the mainland, from introduced mammalian predators at islands and from competition with man for food and bait organisms. Ten islands and seven mainland sites are isolated as supporting more than 1% of the world population, and, together with their intertidal zones, are recommended for Nature Reserve status. 相似文献

A range of different biodiversity-based selection methods for nature reserves has been tested for terrestrial environments, including those based on diversity hotspots, endemicity hotspots and complementarity. In this study, we investigate the utility of these approaches for a coral reef embayment. We compare coral and fish species richness in a random accumulation of reserve sites with (a) hotspots analysis, (b) stratified selection of hotspots, and (c) complementarity. Cumulative species-site curves indicated that complementarity maximized the rate of accumulation of species of both corals and fishes in reserves, while the hotspot approach performed moderately well. An equivalent number of reserve sites supported a greater proportion of the coral biodiversity when compared to fishes, reflecting the broader distribution of corals. Our results indicate that when choosing an indicator group as a proxy for representing overall diversity in a reserve network, the group with the greatest heterogeneity will provide the best results. Our findings also show that although a modest number of protected sites (20%) will incorporate much of the local diversity (>75%), species-specific approaches must be incorporated to target rare species. 相似文献

The effects of schisandrin B (Sch B) and its analogs on solar irradiation-induced oxidative injury were examined in BJ human fibroblasts. Sch B and schisandrin C (Sch C) increased cellular reduced glutathione (GSH) level and protected against solar irradiation-induced oxidative injury. The photoprotection was paralleled by decreases in the elastases-type protease activity and matrix-metalloproteinases-1 expression in solar-irradiated fibroblasts. The cytochrome P-450-mediated metabolism of Sch B or Sch C caused ROS production. The results suggest that by virtue of its pro-oxidant action and the subsequent glutathione antioxidant response, Sch B or Sch C may offer the prospect of preventing skin photo-aging. 相似文献

A house standard lot is tested along with experimental samples in a variable TCID50 assay in order to monitor and control assay performance. Instead of being simply a control, it is proposed to use this lot
as a calibration standard to reduce the systematic variability in the assay caused by acknowledged sources of variability
such as the age of the cells used in the assay and interlaboratory differences. Because of this new proposal, the consistency
of the relationship between the test sample and the house standard is assessed within the acceptance range of the house standard.
A linear mixed-effects measurement error model is proposed for the data. The slope curve is then used to assess the dynamic
relationship between the sample and the house standard within the house standard range. It is shown with these analyses that
