Recycled compost leachate (RCL or euphemistically named "goody water") can be a potent source of foul odor on mushroom substrate production sites and contributes to composting smells. A complex mixture of sulfur compounds, fatty acids, and nitrogen containing compounds is responsible for odor production. Fifty samples, collected from 14 compost production sites in Ireland and the U.K. over a 2 year period, were analyzed for chemical properties and by thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry (TG-MS) for compositional differences. Results indicated that aerated samples had lower values of electrical conductivity, redox potential, and dry matter content than nonaerated samples and that the higher thermal stability of aerated samples measured by TGA could be attributed to greater mineralization of the substrate due to aerobic processes. The lower temperatures noted for peak evolution of methane, water, and carbon dioxide from TG-MS analysis suggested that a more energetic process had occurred in aerated RCL storage facilities, producing greater decomposition of macromolecules that volatilized at lower temperatures. Chemical composition, thermal stability of the freeze-dried leachate, pyrolysis profiles, and relative amounts of pyrolysis products were all markers of as to how effective control measures could influence RCL quality. 相似文献

Polyphenol oxidases (PPOs) present in mature wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) kernels have been implicated in the undesirable darkening of cereal products such as Asian noodles. To accelerate the functional characterization of wheat PPOs and allow the identification of those PPO genes that are primarily involved in food biochemistry, several basic local alignment search tool (BLAST) searches of expressed sequence tag (EST) databases were performed using a known wheat PPO sequence as a search argument; identified ESTs were resequenced and aligned. Results from this study suggest the presence of at least six PPO genes in hexaploid wheat, falling into two clusters with three similar sequences each. Based on the tissues used for cDNA library preparation, three genes (all members of one cluster) are expressed during kernel development and may therefore influence cereal product quality; the remaining three genes (belonging to the second cluster) were isolated from nonkernel cDNA libraries and may not be expressed at high levels during grain development. Discovery of these genes represents an essential first step in the functional characterization of wheat PPOs. 相似文献

Management of stored-grain insect pests by farmers or elevator managers should be based upon a knowledge of the grain storage environment and the ecology of insect pests. Grain storage facilities and practices, geographical location, government policies, and marketing demands for grain quality are discussed as factors influencing stored-grain insect pest management decisions in the United States. Typical practices include a small number of grain samples designed to provide grain quality information for segregation, blending and marketing. This low sampling rate results in subjective evaluation and inconsistent penalties for insect-related quality factors. Information on the efficacy of insect pest management practices in the United States, mainly for farm-stored wheat, is discussed, and stored-grain integrated pest management (IPM) is compared to field-crop IPM. The transition from traditional stored-grain insect pest control to IPM will require greater emphasis on sampling to estimate insect densities, the development of sound economic thresholds and decision-making strategies, more selective use of pesticides, and greater use of nonchemical methods such as aeration. New developments in insect monitoring, predictive computer models, grain cooling by aeration, biological control, and fumigation are reviewed, their potential for improving insect pest management is discussed, and future research needs are examined. 相似文献

For the UK, Bemisia tabaci poses a threat primarily to protected vegetable crops due to the transmission of several plant-pathogenic viruses. There are at least 24 different biotypes of B. tabaci that cannot be differentiated through morphological traits. The B (Middle East-Asia Minor 1 species) and Q (Mediterranean species) biotypes are widely considered to be the most important and, as such, the ability to rapidly and precisely biotype B. tabaci interceptions is vital when developing effective control strategies. Intercepted adult/pupal B. tabaci received from the UK Plant Health and Seeds Inspectorate (PHSI) during 2002–2003 (n?=?60) and 2010–2011 (n?=?42) were both biotyped and tested for the presence of Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) and Tomato yellow leaf curl Sardinia virus (TYLCSV) using a real-time PCR assay based on TaqMan? chemistry. The positive results indicated that during 2002–2003 the Q biotype comprised 68.3?% of the interceptions whilst in 2010–2011 it comprised 66.7?% of the B. tabaci samples intercepted. Only three of the B biotypes collected during 2002–2003 were positive for TYLCSV, two originating from Israel and the other of unknown origin. This study investigates polyacrylonitile(PAN) fibers stabilized with various doses of electron beam irradiation (EBI) ability to produce carbon fibers. Feasibility was verified by FT-IR, the percent of gel fraction, density, DSC, XRD, and mechanical measurements. FT-IR spectra showed that the intensities of the stretching C??N bonds decreased at 2,244 cm?1 with increasing EBI dose. This de crease was related to cyclization of nitrile groups during EBI-stabilization. The degree of cyclization was determined from the gel fraction and density tests. The gel content and density of PAN fibers stabilized by EBI increased with an increase in the EBI dose. Thermal properties were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermally activated reactions. DSC curves showed that EBI treatment influenced the quantity of released heat and the exothermic position at low temperature over a wide temperature range. The strongest diffraction peak from the PAN precursor fiber arose from the (100) plane; its stabilization index (SI) was evaluated by X-ray diffraction. The X-ray results showed that the peak intensity decreases gradually with increasing EBI dose. In addition, tensile strength decreased the EBI stabilization level. 相似文献

The downstream movement of coho salmon fry and parr in the fall, as distinct from the spring migration of smolts, has been well documented across the range of the species. In many cases, these fish overwinter in freshwater, but they sometimes enter marine waters. It has long been assumed that these latter fish did not survive to return as adults and were ‘surplus’ to the stream's carrying capacity. From 2004 to 2010, we passive integrated transponder tagged 25,981 juvenile coho salmon in three streams in Washington State to determine their movement, survival and the contribution of various juvenile life histories to the adult escapement. We detected 86 returning adults, of which 32 originated from fall/winter migrants. Half of these fall/winter migrants spent ~1 year in the marine environment, while the other half spent ~2 years. In addition, the median return date for fall/winter migrants was 16 days later than spring migrants. Our results indicated that traditional methods of spring‐only smolt enumeration may underestimate juvenile survival and total smolt production, and also overestimate spring smolt‐to‐adult return (SAR). These are important considerations for coho salmon life cycle models that assume juvenile coho salmon have a fixed life history or use traditional parr‐to‐smolt and SAR rates. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To identify survival and morbidity information after surgery for metastases from apocrine gland anal sac adenocarcinomas (AGACA). STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: Five dogs with AGACA. METHODS: Medical records of dogs that had surgery for treatment of metastatic AGACA between 1993 and 2003 were reviewed. Criteria for inclusion required that dogs had lymphadenectomy, with or without further debulking, as part of their treatment for metastatic AGACA and that the tissue was histologically confirmed as consistent with the primary AGACA. Signalment, history, physical examination findings, clinicopathologic data, imaging findings, surgical complications, number of surgeries, survival times, and cause of death were recorded. All dogs had a complete blood count, serum biochemical profile, serum electrolytes, 3-projection thoracic radiographs, abdominal radiographs and/or abdominal ultrasonography, and histologic confirmation of metastatic AGACA invading the regional lymph nodes and caudal abdomen. RESULTS: No surgical complications occurred. Three dogs were euthanatized; median survival, 20.6 months. One dog was alive for 19 months postoperatively. One dog had 5 sequential surgical procedures: 1 iliac lymphadenectomy and 4 debulking procedures of metastatic neoplastic tissue around and dorsal to the iliac vessels extending into the pelvic cavity, and was alive 54 months after initial surgery. CONCLUSION: Dogs with anal sac adenocarcinoma metastases to the iliac lymph nodes can experience long-term survival after surgical excision of the metastatic lesion. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Lymphadenectomy may afford long-term survival to patients with metastatic anal sac adenocarcinoma. 相似文献
