The influence of immature municipal solid waste-biosolids composts on emergence and mean days to emergence (MDE) of several weed species was evaluated in a pot trial under greenhouse conditions. The experiment consisted of placing a 7.5 cm deep layer of three-day-old immature compost, a mature and stable compost, an artificial medium or control sand as a mulch on ivyleaf morning glory seeds. Immature three-day-old compost decreased percentage emergence, shoot and root dry weight, and increased MDE of ivyleaf morning glory. In an experiment with eight-week-old immature compost utilizing mulching depths of 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10 cm and the untreated control on seeds of three weed species, common purslane did not emerge under any of the immature compost treatments. The MDE of ivyleaf morning glory and barnyard grass increased linearly as immature compost depths increased. Next, eight economically important weed species were sown in pots with either mature or immature (eight-week-old) compost utilizing mulching depths of 2.5 and 10 cm, in addition to an untreated control. Control pots yielded higher percentages of emergence than compost treatments for all species evaluated. Common purslane, large crabgrass, pig-weed, Florida beggarweed, and dichondra did not emerge through a 10-cm deep layer of mature compost mulch, or 2.5 or 10 cm deep layer of immature mulch. Significant compost maturity/depth interactions were observed for percent emergence on common purslane, ground cherry, large crabgrass, Florida beggarweed, and ivyleaf morning glory. A thinner layer was required to suppress germination using immature eight-week-old compost as compared to mature and stable compost. Immature (three-day or eight-week-old) compost containing acetic acid concentrations of 2474 and 1776 mg.kg?1 respectively reduced percentage emergence of several economically important weed species. These studies suggest that immature composts can be used to control weeds under conditions where spatial separation is maintained between the crop and the compost and phytotoxic fermentation products do not affect the health of the mulched plants and where odors associated with such partially stabilized products do not pose problems.  相似文献

The dispersal unit of wild wheat bears two pronounced awns that balance the unit as it falls. We discovered that the awns are also able to propel the seeds on and into the ground. The arrangement of cellulose fibrils causes bending of the awns with changes in humidity. Silicified hairs that cover the awns allow propulsion of the unit only in the direction of the seeds. This suggests that the dead tissue is analogous to a motor. Fueled by the daily humidity cycle, the awns induce the motility required for seed dispersal.  相似文献

Avian bornaviruses (ABV) are known to be the causative agent of proventricular dilatation disease (PDD) in parrots and their relatives (Psittaciformes). A broad range of ABV genotypes has been detected not only in psittacine birds, but also in other avian species including canary birds (Serinus canaria forma domestica) and Bengalese finches (Lonchura striata f. dom.), which are both members of the order songbirds (Passeriformes).During this study 286 samples collected from captive and wild birds of various passerine species in different parts of Germany were screened for the presence of ABV. Interestingly, only three ABV-positive samples were identified by RT-PCR. They originated from one yellow-winged pytilia (Pytilia hypogrammica) and two black-rumped waxbills (Estrilda troglodytes) from a flock of captive estrildid finches in Saxony. The ABV isolates detected here were only distantly related to ABV isolates found in passerine species in Germany and Japan and form a new genotype tentatively called ABV-EF (for “estrildid finches”).  相似文献

The chloroform extract of the stem bark of Erythrina burttii showed antifungal and antibacterial activities using the disk diffusion method. Flavonoids were identified as the active principles. Activities were observed against fungi and Gram(+) bacteria, but the Gram(-) bacteria Escherichia coli was resistant.  相似文献

Fifteen new guaiazulene-based terpenoids designated anthogorgienes A-O (1-15) were isolated from a Chinese gorgonian Anthogorgia sp., together with eight known analogues (16-23). The structural patterns were classified into monomers, dimers, and trimers, which were supposed to be generated from a precursor guaiazulene and followed by side-chain and nucleus oxidation and oxidative rearrangement. The structures of new compounds were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic (IR, MS, and 1D and 2D NMR) data analysis. A possible biogenetic relationship of the isolated compounds was postulated. Some of the compounds showed potent antifouling activities against the larval settlement of barnacle Balanus amphitrite , whereas their antibiotic activities were also evaluated.  相似文献

In domestic wastewater, bacterial physiology controls cell production (growth, replication) and cell maintenance, determining how energy is allocated between these two processes. The aim here was to develop a method to quantify these cellular processes so that the bacterial physiological state could be manipulated to lower this source of pollution. We simultaneously used the incorporation of radiolabelled thymidine into DNA (a measure of new cell synthesis) and leucine into protein in wastewater to quantitatively distinguish bacterial growth from maintenance processes. We found that DNA and protein syntheses were coupled in wastewater after substrate enrichment (with glucose or acetate)??balanced growth. Once the substrate was depleted, the two processes became uncoupled??unbalanced growth. In this physiological state, the bacteria were synthesising protein, but fewer bacteria were replicating. More energy was allocated to cell maintenance than replication. A mean Leu/TdR ratio of 7.4 was determined for wastewater and was similar to natural aquatic ecosystems. As the bacterial growth rate decreased, the Leu/TdR ratios increased. We show how the simultaneous measurement of [3H]Leu and [3H]TdR quantitatively distinguishes balanced from unbalanced growth. Low [3H]Leu/[3H]TdR ratios indicated bacteria were physiologically stressed, an ideal state for biological wastewater treatment processes (WWTP) as the bacteria divert more energy to maintenance activities instead of growth. Leu/TdR ratios of 70 have been recorded in natural aquatic ecosystems which suggests WWTP have potential to be manipulated to achieve much higher Leu/TdR ratios than we report here. Changes to plant operation to improve operation efficiency include finding the optimum rate of substrate (pollution supply) or alternating aerobic and anaerobic periods to maximise the Leu/TdR ratio to achieve less biomass production for land disposal and more cost-effective operation that generates less pollution in the effluent.  相似文献

Band gap fluorescence from individual single-walled carbon nanotubes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Fluorescence has been observed directly across the band gap of semiconducting carbon nanotubes. We obtained individual nanotubes, each encased in a cylindrical micelle, by ultrasonically agitating an aqueous dispersion of raw single-walled carbon nanotubes in sodium dodecyl sulfate and then centrifuging to remove tube bundles, ropes, and residual catalyst. Aggregation of nanotubes into bundles otherwise quenches the fluorescence through interactions with metallic tubes and substantially broadens the absorption spectra. At pH less than 5, the absorption and emission spectra of individual nanotubes show evidence of band gap-selective protonation of the side walls of the tube. This protonation is readily reversed by treatment with base or ultraviolet light.  相似文献
