W. ROBERT COOK, BVSc, FRCVS The effect of left recurrent laryngeal neuropathy (LRLN) on the metabolic cost of locomotion (MCL) and peak aerobic power (V?O2peak) was evaluated in four trained Thoroughbred racehorses. Oxygen consumption (V?O2), carbon dioxide production (V?CO2), venous lactate concentrations (LAC), and heart rate (HR) were measured during a treadmill exercise test (TET). Each horse performed the exercise test four times, alternating between normal upper airway function and reversibly induced LRLN. Subcutaneous infusion of 2% mepivicaine, a local anesthetic, into the region where the left recurrent laryngeal nerve passes caudal to the cricoid cartilage was used to induce LRLN. The induction of LRLN did not alter the relationship between V?O2 and treadmill speed at exercise intensities where V?O2 was less than V?O2peak (<9 m/sec). However, a 15.3% reduction in V?O2peak (Normal = 165.3 ± 3.4, LRLN = 140.0 ± 3.2 mL/kg/min ± SE, P <.001) occurred at higher treadmill speeds in horses with induced LRLN. A significant group (Normal v LRLN) by treadmill speed effect was found for LAC and R only at treadmill speeds where V?O2=V?O2peak. Peak lactate (LACpeak) did not change after the induction of LRLN. The relationship between HR and treadmill speed increased in horses with induced LRLN at exercise intensities where V?O2 < V?O2peak. Peak heart rate (HRpeak) remained unchanged. Performance as indicated by the maximum number of speed intervals completed (STEPmax) decreased 7% in horses with induced LRLN (Normal = 9.1 ± 0.04, LRLN = 8.5 ± 0.2 minutes ± SE, P <.04). A comparison of paired exercise test measurements showed no evidence of a training effect, or decreased performance caused by a learned response, over the course of the experiment. The results of this study indicate that alterations in ventilation caused by LRLN cause a significant reduction in V?O2peak, but do not cause an increase in the metabolic cost of locomotion at exercise intensities where V?O2 is less than V?O2peak.  相似文献

An Andalusian Stallion with left hind limb lameness had a radiolucent lesion in the medullary cavity of distal tibial metaphysis. After euthanasia for other disease, the tibia was examined with magnetic resonance (MR). The MR imaging sequences were characterized by a double line sign, although showing quite different lesion area intensities. Histologically, the lesion was compatible with medullary infarction being characterized by normal spongy bone, areas of abundant fibrous tissue and numerous necrotic adipocytes in various stages of destruction.  相似文献

The effect of dietary digestible protein/digestible energy (DP/DE) ratios and feeding level on growth, feed efficiency, nutrient and energy usage by Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar ; initial body weight, 7.0 g/fish) at 15°C was investigated in a 16-week feeding trial. Three diets, differing in their DP and DE contents, namely 37/18 (regular diet, RD), 37/21 (high fat diet, HF) and 44/ 22 (high nutrient-dense diet, HND) g/MJ of dry feed were formulated. DP/DE ratios were 20, 18 and 20 g/MJ for the RD, HF and HND diets, respectively. Salmon were hand-fed three times a day at either 100% or 85% of the feed requirement estimated by a bioenergetics model. At each feeding level, DE intake (kJ/fish) was similar for all three diets. Diet composition did not affect growth rate. However, increasing the digestible energy density from 18 to 22 MJ/kg of dry feed resulted in a significant increase ( P  < 0.05) in feed efficiency. Restricting feed intake significantly decreased live body weight gains for all diets. However, feed efficiency was not affected by feeding level. Diet composition and feeding level did not affect carcass composition and nutrient and energy usage, with the exception of a higher ( P  < 0.05) carcass lipid of fish fed the HF100 diet compared with the fish fed the RD and HND diets and a higher ( P  < 0.05) lipid gain (g/fish) of fish fed the HF100 diet compared with fish fed all the diets at the restricted feeding level. Restricting feeding resulted in significantly lower ( P  < 0.05) energy gain (kJ/fish) compared with fish fed at 100%. Increasing the DE and nutrient density of the diet had no effect on growth but improved feed efficiency and lowered solid wastes (g of solid wastes per kg of fish produced) while dissolved wastes were not affected by dietary ormulation.  相似文献

In this study the spatial distribution of eggs, larvae and juveniles of European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) was followed in 2004 and 2005 during three consecutive cruises each year in spring–summer to test what the limits of retention are in a non‐upwelling area. Eggs, small larvae and large juveniles were mainly distributed over the shelf, whereas large larvae and small juveniles were found mainly off the shelf. Although overall distributions were similar, the 2 yr differed in that there was more of a coastal distribution of individuals in 2004, whereas in 2005 more individuals were found off the shelf. There were no significant differences in the length–weight relationships for individuals found on and off the shelf or between years. The correspondence in circulation patterns and the lack of difference in the length–weight relationships suggest that a single population is present, larvae drifting off the shelf due to currents and returning as mobile juveniles. Quantile regression analysis of the long‐term recruitment index suggests that transport off the shelf may favour good recruitments. This would suggest that in non‐upwelling regions the retention area resulting in good recruitment may not be restricted to the shelf.  相似文献

Hexaploid tritordeum is the amphiploid derived from the cross between Hordeum chilense and durum wheat. The storage proteins synthesized in the Hch genome influence the gluten strength of this amphiploid. The D‐prolamins of H. chilense have been analysed by sodium dodecyl sulphate‐polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis with and without urea. A new locus named GluHch3 has been detected. The effects of allelic variation at this locus on gluten strength, as measured the sodium dodecyl sulphate sedimentation test, were determined using seeds of 92 lines from a cross of two hexaploid tritordeum lines. Two allelic variants have been detected for this locus, which have shown different effects on gluten strength.  相似文献

After oral co-administration of two dosages of netobimin (7.5 and 20 mg kg-1 with fenbendazole (1.1 mg kg-1) to Merino sheep, the AUC0-infinity of albendazole sulphoxide at the lower dosage of netobimin, was significantly increased (75.5 per cent) from control value (34.43 +/- 7.91 versus 60.33 +/- 11.93 microg h ml-1). The pharmacokinetic parameters MRT and T1/2 were also increased: 18.96 +/- 2.54 vs 26.44 +/- 4.69 h and 10.31 +/- 1.72 vs 22.28 +/- 6.75 h respectively. No data corresponding to the higher dosage of netobimin (20 mg kg-1) were statistically different from control values. It is concluded that fenbendazole increases the bioavailability of albendazole sulphoxide in sheep at the 7.5 mg kg-1 dosage, and this may produce a potentiated anthelmintic action.  相似文献

The nature of resistance of Sphaerotheca fuliginea Poll. race 1 was investigated in leaves of susceptible, moderately resistant and resistant genotypes of Cucumis melo . For this purpose three different tests were carried out. The first one was designed to assess whether resistance was caused by pre- or post-infectional mechanisms, and the other two tests were focused to determine if any differences were present in the progression ratio of the disease, measured as the delaying time in conidiophore and conidia formation, among the different cultivars which were tested. The results showed that in the resistant controls ('PMR5' and 'PI 124111'), the resistant reaction was probably due to pre-infectional mechanisms, or at least very near to the moment of infection, while in the moderately resistant and resistant Spanish local cultivars it was clearly due to post-infectional mechanisms characterized by an important delay in the growth and development of the fungus when compared with the susceptible cultivars. Suggestions are made for the development of more successful breeding programmes.  相似文献

An 8‐year‐old Labrador Retriever developed acute central vestibular signs. An extra‐axial mass was detected on MR images ventral to the brainstem. The mass was both T1‐ and T2‐hypointense; there was also thin‐rimmed patchy contrast enhancement. These findings were nonspecific, but the extreme T2‐hypointensity was notable and suggested a hemorrhagic mass. The histologic diagnosis was anaplastic meningioma with acute hemorrhage. These findings document an unusual appearance of a meningioma in MR images due to intratumoral hemorrhage.  相似文献

Second phalangeal fractures have been classified as either simple or multiple and have been managed in a variety of ways. The removal of small osteochondral fragments originating from the palmar midsagittal aspect of the proximal second phalanx is reported. This lesion has been described as a coincidental finding unrelated to lameness. Based on our clinical finding of lameness in this case and the response to an intraarticular injection of anesthetic, excision of the fragment was elected. However, the importance of confirming the significance of a radiographic lesion with local anesthesia prior to surgical intervention must be stressed.  相似文献
