Four groups of pink salmon, which had been reared under artificial light, became sexually mature and produced viable gametes: 59 days prior to, and 19 – 32 days, 115 days and 220 days after their expected date of reaching sexual maturity. Altered times of sexual maturation were obtained by accelerating, leaving unchanged, or decelerating the rate of change of photoperiod which each group of fish would normally receive during its first year of life. All groups of fish were exposed to a normal rate of change in photoperiod during their final year of life. Mean fecundity was reduced from the 800–2000 ova observed in wild stocks, and ranged from 629 for the 59 day advanced fish, to 862 for the 115 day delayed fish. Egg mortality during the period from fertilization to eyeing was much greater in the three groups of fish subjected to accelerated or decelerated rates of change in photoperiod than in the fish subjected to the normal rate of change in photoperiod. Some of the progeny of the 220 day delayed fish, which were reared under artificial light with the normal rate of change in photoperiod set 220 days out-of-phase, became sexually mature 2 years after they had begun life as fertilized eggs.  相似文献

A cutting experiment was carried out on a sward of S23 perennial ryegrass to study the effect of different defoliation regimes on regrowth and the factors affecting regrowth. The defoliation frequencies and intensities encompassed the range commonly found on continuously stocked pastures. The defoliation regimes produced swards of contrasting growth form with regrowth characteristics which differed in respect of senescence loss, fall in water-soluble carbohydrate concentration, residual leaf area index, photosynthesis per unit leaf area index and photosynthesis per unit area of land. Regrowth was most closely related to the latter. These results were used to interpret data for net canopy photosynthesis of continuously grazed pastures.  相似文献

Glucose or starch labelled with 14C was mixed thoroughly into slurried soils. Aggregates of different sizes were obtained from the soils as they dried. The labelled substrates were considered to be distributed in both micro- and macropores in the aggregates. Control samples (labelled substrates in macropores only) were prepared by adding the labelled carbohydrates after the formation of the aggregates. The various samples were sterilized by γ-irradiation and stored at ?15°C.Samples were wetted to about ?20kPa, inoculated with soil organisms, and incubated for 4 weeks at 28°C in closed systems, which enabled regular measurement of 14CO2 released.Based on the 14CO2 released, it was concluded that starch was protected from microbial attack when present in micropores in aggregates made from fine sandy loam.After incubation samples were dried and rewetted. The flush of 14CO2 released was twice as big for samples containing labelled starch compared with glucose, showing that disruption of aggregates, containing residual starch, and rearrangements of soil components are as important as chemical and biological factors in causing the flush of CO2 resulting from wetting a soil. Mechanical disruption of the aggregates resulted in a similar flush of 14CO2.  相似文献

The first recorded outbreak of type C botulism in gulls (Larus spp.) in Britain is described. Between June and October 1975, at least 2080 gulls died around the Firth of Forth. The hot dry summer favoured the proliferation of the causative organism, Clostridium botulinum. A definite source of the botulism was not found but prompt removal of the carcases and covering the pools where Cl. botulinum was growing appeared to reduce the mortality. Immunity acquired during widespread exposure to the disease in 1975 may have prevented the reappearance of botulism during the similar climatic conditions in 1976.  相似文献

Finfish, shellfish, and crustacean samples are extracted with isopropanol and benzene; the extract is filtered and then concentrated. The extract, dissolved in hexane, is treated with oleum and extracted with aqueous alkali. The aqueous phase is acidified and extracted with petroleum ether-ethyl ether (1 + 1). The Kepone residue is determined by electron capture gas-liquid chromatography (GLC). Recoveries obtained by 8 laboratories from 15 species of finfish fortified at 0.02-0.23 ppm ranged from 37 to 107% with a mean +/- relative standard deviation of 79.4 +/- 14.5%. For oysters fortified at 0.01-0.10 ppm, recoveries range from 63 to 129% with a mean of 78.8 +/- 20.8%. For crustaceans fortified at 0.05-0.26 ppm, recoveries ranged from 52 to 110% with a mean of 78 +/- 16.4%. The approximate limits of quantitation for finfish and for shellfish and crustaceans are 0.02 and 0.05 ppm, respectively, under the GLC conditions used in this study.  相似文献

Direct observation of washed conidia of Cylindrocladium scoparium on non-sterile soils, air dried and rewetted immediately before deposition of conidia, indicated that peak germination (33–58%) occurred after 24 h incubation at 26°C. Peak germination on continually moist soils was lower (18–26%) than on rewetted soils. Lysis of germ tubes and germinating conidia on continually moist soils at 26°C was evident with 48 h. Conidia did not germinate on continually moist soils at 6°C and lysis did not become apparent until 168 h. Conidia germinated at a high level (93–99%) in axenic culture in the absence of exogenous C and N sources. The inhibition of conidial germination on soils may be attributed, in part, to the presence of soil volatiles. Germination of conidia placed on washed agar disks and exposed to volatiles from four soils ranged from 51 to 86% of the no-soil controls. Addition of carbon (13 ng C per conidium as glucose) and nitrogen (65 pg N ng?1 C as NH4C1) nullified the inhibitory effect of the soil volatiles. Germinability assayed on a selective medium at 26°C of conidia in artificially infested soils (approximately 104 conidia g?1 soil) decreased progressively during incubation at 26°C from 1 week to 4 months. No germinable conidia were recovered from artificially infested soils after 2 months incubation at 6°C. Conidia of C. floridanum and C. crotalariae responded similarly to C. scoparium in many assays.  相似文献

One way to disperse waste from large commercial feedlots is to spread large amounts of the waste on limited areas nearby. The effects of this practice on the soil microbial populations was assessed. Feedlot waste (FLW) was applied for 5 yr at rates of 0, 22, 67, 134, and 269 t ha?1 yr?1. Additional treatments were 538 t ha?1 yr?1 for 1 and 3 years and applications of N and NPK fertilizer. Soil cores from plots were sampled for microbial analysis before, during, and after the fifth growing season. April, July. and December soil samples were analyzed to 180-, 20-, and 480-cm depths, respectively. The following utritional and physiological groups of microorganisms were counted: soil fungi on Rose Bengal agar; bacteria on a basal mineral salts medium, on nutrient agar (both aerobically and in BBL GasPak jars), and on EMB agar (Escherichia coli-type colonies and total counts); and nitrifying and denitrifying organisms. Little effect due to FLW application rates was found, and organisms producing coliform-type colonies on EMB agar did not persist in the soil. The results indicated that applying large amounts of feedlot waste will not deleteriously affect soil microorganisms.  相似文献

The theory of island biogeography supplemented with dynamic concepts from other areas of biology can be applied to a single species. Data series from mule deer Odocoileus hemonius hemonius populations inhabiting diverse mountain as well as prairie habitats were compared. The fawn-doe ratios obtained at 6 months of age were inversely correlated (r = ?0·97; p < 0·01) with ‘island’ size as indicated by the percentage of cover. Populations inhabiting small islands of cover in the prairie consistently had higher winter fawn-doe ratios than those of the relatively secure mountain habitats. Cover fragmentation and low security level of the prairi populations relates to a high annual turnover rate compared with that of the mountain populations. The impact of cover fragmentation is consistent with this interpretation of theory which pictures reproduction as annual recolonisation. This approach may be useful in predicting hunting and ecological impact effects.  相似文献

Soil samples were fractionated by sedimentation in water and by flotation in heavy liquids to separate complexed and uncomplexed organic and inorganic components. Flocculation of clays in heavy organic liquids was delayed by addition of a surfactant. Heavy liquids and surfactants sorbed by soil components were removed by washing with acetone-water mixtures.In a sample of a red-brown earth, the organic carbon and nitrogen contents were highest in the finest separates. In samples of a ground-water rendzina and a chernozemic soil, the coarse clay and silt separates had the highest organic carbon and nitrogen contents. Organic matter was concentrated in low density fractions in all separates. Carbon/nitrogen ratios were lowest in the finer and heavier separates. Calcium, and to a lesser extent manganese, iron and phosphorus, were concentrated in low density fractions: thus these elements appear to be associated with organic matter and may be important in organo-mineral complex formation. Carbonates, titanium, iron, silicon and potassium were concentrated at the highest densities.Organic fractions < 2.06 g cm?3 from sand size separates were insoluble in alkali and had wide carbon/nitrogen ratios characteristic of plant debris. The light fractions from fine silt and coarse clay separates were more soluble in alkali but showed high ratios of humic to fulvic materials and high absorption at 280 nm. Such materials were considered to be microbial cell debris and were associated with high contents of disordered aluminium and iron oxides and expanding lattice silicates in 1 to 5 μm aggregates.Heavier fractions, particularly of finer clay separates, contained more fulvic and humic materials of a more aliphatic nature than those in < 2.06 g cm?3 fractions. It is suggested that physical sorption on clay surfaces may be more important in these fractions. Ellite and kaolinite were concentrated in medium density fractions, and contents of some iron oxides and titanium minerals were highest in fractions > 2.06 g cm?3. Such minerals plus quartz and feldspars were associated with minor amounts of organic matter or possibly were not involved in organo-mineral associations.  相似文献
