Background

Anthelmintic treatment is the most common way of controlling nematode infections in ruminants. However, several countries have reported anthelmintic resistance (AR), representing a limitation for sustainable small ruminant production. The knowledge regarding worm control management represents a baseline to develop a guideline for preventing AR. The aim of the present study was therefore to improve our knowledge about the worm control practices in small ruminant flocks in Norway.

Methods

A questionnaire survey regarding worm control practices was performed in small ruminant flocks in Norway. Flocks were selected from the three main areas of small ruminant farming, i.e. the coastal, inland and northern areas. A total of 825 questionnaires, comprising 587 sheep flocks (return rate of 51.3%) and 238 goat flocks (52.6%) were included.

Results

The results indicated that visual appraisal of individual weight was the most common means of estimating the anthelmintic dose used in sheep (78.6%) and goat (85.1%) flocks. The mean yearly drenching rate in lambs and ewes were 2.5 ± 1.7 and 1.9 ± 1.1, respectively, whereas it was 1.0 (once a year) in goats. However, these figures were higher in sheep in the coastal area with a rate of 3.4 and 2.2 in lambs and ewes, respectively. Benzimidazoles were the predominant anthelmintic class used in sheep flocks (64.9% in 2007), whereas benzimidazoles and macrocyclic lactones were both equally used in dairy goat flocks. In the period of 2005-2007, 46.3% of the sheep flocks never changed the anthelmintic class. The dose and move strategy was practiced in 33.2% of the sheep flocks.

Conclusions

The present study showed that inaccurate weight calculation gives a risk of under-dosing in over 90% of the sheep and goat flocks in Norway. Taken together with a high treatment frequency in lambs, a lack of anthelmintic class rotation and the common use of a dose-and-move strategy, a real danger for development of anthelmintic resistance (AR) seems to exist in Norwegian sheep and goat flocks. This risk seems particularly high in coastal areas where high treatment frequencies in lambs were recorded.  相似文献

Groups of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) yearling smolts were reared in duplicate tanks supplied with freshwater or seawater, and subjected to different feeding frequencies, 100% (fed every day), 50% (fed every other day), 25% (fed every forth day) and 0% (starved), from 26 May to 26 July. After 8 weeks, all the groups were re‐fed in excess for 6 weeks. Fish were maintained on their respective a priori salinity treatments during the 6‐week follow‐up period. Starvation for a period of 8 weeks in freshwater resulted in a loss of hypo‐osmoregulatory ability when smolts were challenged with seawater and unfed smolts maintained in freshwater were unable to adapt to seawater in mid‐July. Ration levels influenced the growth rate and body size significantly. The overall growth rate was higher in freshwater than at corresponding rations in seawater. Partial compensatory growth was observed in the 0 and 25% groups following re‐feeding. Branchial Na+,K+‐ATPase (NKA) activity decreased rapidly in unfed smolts in freshwater and was the lowest in the starved group, whereas an initial increase was observed in those groups reared in seawater. After re‐feeding NKA activity differences decreased between the former feeding groups. Our results suggest that nutritional factors and/or energy levels are critical for the maintenance of hydro‐mineral balance of salmon smolts.  相似文献

Blood selenium levels were found to fluctuate throughout the year, being highest during the indoor season when the greatest amounts of compound concentrates were fed. From October to January the average blood selenium levels increased from 0.10 μg/ml to 0.18 μg/ml (15 cows). Subcutaneous injections of barium selenate (500 mg selenium) increased the blood selenium levels significantly. The treated group (15 cows) reached average levels of about 0.21 μg/ml blood during the indoor season.The effect of oral supplementation of sodium selenite (for 2 months) on the levels of plasma selenium, blood selenium and glutathione peroxidase activity was investigated. Plasma selenium was found to give an immediate reflection of the daily selenium intake. Maximum activity of glutathione peroxidase was reached 1 month after the end of the supplementation period.It is concluded that if selenium enriched concentrates are used in a normal feeding regimen, further supplementation with selenium does not seem to be necessary.  相似文献

  1. Spatial connectivity is an essential process to consider in the design and assessment of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). To help maintain and restore marine populations and communities MPAs should form ecologically coherent networks. How to estimate and implement connectivity in MPA design remains a challenge.
  2. Here a new theoretical framework is presented based on biophysical modelling of organism dispersal, combined with a suite of tools to assess different aspects of connectivity that can be integrated in MPA design. As a demonstration, these tools are applied to an MPA network in the Baltic Sea (HELCOM MPA).
  3. The tools are based on the connectivity matrix, which summarizes dispersal probabilities, averaged over many years, between all considered areas in the geographic target area. The biophysical model used to estimate connectivity included important biological traits that affect dispersal patterns where different trait combinations and habitat preferences will produce specific connectivity matrices representing different species.
  4. Modelled connectivity matrices were used to assess local retention within individual MPAs, which offers indications about the adequacy of size when MPAs are considered in isolation. The connectivity matrix also provides information about source areas to individual MPAs, e.g. sources of larvae or pressures such as contaminants. How well several MPAs act as a network was assessed within a framework of eigenvalue perturbation theory (EPT). With EPT, the optimal MPA network with respect to connectivity can be identified. In addition, EPT can suggest optimal extensions of existing MPA networks to enhance connectivity. Finally, dispersal barriers can be identified based on the connectivity matrix, which may suggest boundaries for management units.
  5. The assessment of connectivity for the HELCOM MPA are discussed in terms of possible improvements, but the tools presented here could be applied to any region.

Theaim of this study was to determine whether it is possible to influence thespecies composition of the gut microflora in 70-days old halibut larvae(Hippoglossus hippoglossus L.) by addition of bacteriabioencapsulated in Artemia franciscana in two shortpulses.Two Vibrio strains, PB 1-11 and PB 6-1 were used. Twotreatments received each strain alone, a third treatment received the twobacterial strains in mixture, whereas in a control treatment no bacteria wereadded. Five fish tanks were included in each treatment. The bacteria werebioencapsulated in Artemia franciscana metanauplii duringashort-term incubation in bacterial suspensions of the specific strains, andwereadded in two pulses, on day 1 and day 10 of the experiment. Addition ofbacteriadid not increase the total number of colony-forming units (CFU) in the larvalgut. The total CFU in the water was lower in tanks added bioencapsulatedbacteria than in the control treatment (p < 0.05). Animmunocolony blot assay was used to measure the numbers of the specificbacteriaadded in samples of water, A. franciscana, and fishlarvae.At the end of the experiment on day 13, the strain PB 1-11 reached on average10% of the total CFU when added alone and 25% when added in mixture with PB6-1.Strain PB 6-1 reached at the end of the experiment 26.8% of the total CFU whenadded alone and 24.2% when added in mixture with PB 1-11, whereas thepercentages of PB 1-11 and PB 6-1 in the control fish were 12.7% and 10.8% ofthe total CFU, respectively. However, the differences between the experimentaltreatments compared with the control group were not significant(p > 0.05). The addition of bioencapsulated bacteria intwo pulses within a ten days period was therefore not sufficient to influencethe species composition of the microflora of the halibut larvae.  相似文献

The larval stage is regarded to be the main bottleneck of halibut production. Halibut eggs were obtained from captive broodstock both by stripping and by natural spawning. Artificial photoperiods were used to increase the total spawning season. Yolk sac larvae are presently produced either in small stagnant units or in large flow through systems. A major consideration is to avoid stress of the larvae, caused by mechanical disturbances of the larvae and by high bacterial load or high ammonia levels in the water.
The experiments showed that halibut larvae began to ingest algae earlier than rotifers Brachionus sp. Supplementation of algae to first feeding tanks resulted in enhanced survival and growth rate of the larvae. Both rotifers and Artemia can be enriched with very high levels of highly unsaturated n-3 fatty acids (n-3 HUFA). Enriched live feed, containing high levels of n-3 HUFA and total lipids, enhanced both survival and growth of the halibut larvae. The highest growth rates were obtained with wild zooplankton and addition of algae, but enriched cultivated feed combined with algae resulted in growth of the same magnitude as with wild zooplankton.  相似文献

Introduction  

Twenty-first century mountain landscapes are evolving under the globally scaled controls of hydroclimate and the spatially and temporally discontinuous impacts of human activity and tectonic plate movements. Attention is drawn to the difficulty of comparing the effectiveness of the three drivers of change (tectonics, using relief as a surrogate, hydroclimate, and human activity) because of their differing temporal rhythms. The direct role of human activity in landscape modification both in terms of land degradation and landscape enhancement is increasingly dominant.  相似文献

Norwegian wild reindeer Rangifer tarandus tarandus are divided into 23 virtually isolated populations, primarily due to the abandonment of traditional migration and movement corridors caused by the development of infrastructures. By conducting a nation-wide, interdisciplinary pre-post study on a temporal scale spanning centuries, we modelled current reindeer movements with respect to archaeological findings to quantify long-term changes in area use related to anthropogenic disturbance. The location of 3,113 pitfall traps and hunting blinds, built 600–2000 years ago and used until 350–400 years ago, testified the location of traditional movement corridors. Current movement routes were delineated using Brownian Bridge Movement Models based on 147 reindeer GPS-monitored during 10 years. Using Path Analysis we quantified direct, indirect and total effects of different infrastructures within multiple scales (1, 5, and 10 km-radius buffers) on the current probability of use of ancient movement corridors. Tourist cabins and roads had the strongest long-term direct effects at most scales: 1 tourist cabin and 1 km road within a 1 km-radius buffer would lead, respectively, to complete area abandonment, and to a 46 % decrease in the probability of use. Power lines and private cabins had significant indirect effects on area use through their effect on roads, while hiking trails and, in particular, hydroelectric dams had highly variable effects, not significant at a nation-wide scale. Finally, we provide a flexible tool to estimate the potential long-term direct and cumulative effects of different types of infrastructures at the desired spatial scale to be used for the development of future sustainable land management plans.  相似文献
