The binding properties of dry proteins are relatively poorly known. Many proteins are present in emulsions and suspensions and also in dry forms. This is particularly true of dairy proteins, which are often stored and sold in powdered form. In the present work, the binding of three terpenes (alpha-terpinene, gamma-terpinene, and terpinolene), which belong to the basic aroma components, and of decane by powdered beta-lactoglobulin (BLG) was studied at different hydration levels (0.05-0.40 g of H(2)O/g of protein) and temperatures (298 and 309.5 K), in the presence or absence of lipids and small concentrations of ethanol. Vapor sorption isotherms were determined for these systems by a static method of headspace gas chromatographic analysis. A cooperative effect of hydrophobic hydration was observed for the binding of aroma terpenes and decane by the solid BLG. The temperature increase from 298 to 309.5 K reduced the observed hydration threshold of BLG by 0.05-0.08 g of H(2)O/g of protein. Lipids (1.2% w/w) in hydrated BLG gave at least a 2-fold increase in its binding affinity for the hydrocarbons studied, and synergic effects of the hydration and lipid on this affinity were observed. 相似文献

Microsatellites (SSRs) were surveyed to detect somatic mutations caused by chronic irradiation in Pinus sylvestris from Chernobyl (Ukraine). The analysed trees grow close to the exploded nuclear power plant. They survived the accident, but show morphological anomalies and reduced growth and vitality. Ionising radiation is a known mutagen which causes double-strand breaks of DNA in all living organisms. Using six SSR markers, one tree was found in which a mutation (deletion) was detected at the gene locus SPAG 7.14. 相似文献

Purpose
The aim of the present study is to evaluate geochemical transformation of soil cover in the territory of Erdenet (Mongolia) and to assess the environmental risk associated with soil cover contamination. The objectives of the present study included: (1) the determination of heavy metals (HMs) and metalloids contents in surface horizons of background and urban soils and the assessment of geochemical transformation of the city’s soil cover; (2) the identification of elements’ associations and patterns of their spatial distribution in the soil cover of the city; (3) the assessment of environmental hazard, related to contamination of soils with complexes of HMs and metalloids.Materials and methods
Soil–geochemical survey was conducted by the authors in the summer periods of 2010 and 2011. In total, 225 samples, including 32 backgrounds, were collected. Bulk contents of HMs and metalloids in soil samples were analyzed by mass-spectral method with inductively coupled plasma at All-Russian Research Institute of Mineral Raw Materials (Moscow) using Elan-6100 and Optima-4300 devices (Perkin Elmer, USA).Results and discussion
Mo, Cu, and Se appeared to be the priority pollutants nearly in all land-use zones. The maximum accumulation of Mo, Cu, Se, As, Sb, and W is restricted to the industrial area where total pollution index of soils (Zc) equals 74.8. Three technogenic associations of elements, derived mainly from petrochemical features of Erdenet ore field and characterized by similar spatial distribution within the city, are identified. Environmental assessment of surface soil horizon geochemistry in Erdenet showed that 1/5 of its area has dangerous and extremely dangerous levels of soil pollution. Conclusions
Experience of the environmental–geochemical assessment of soil cover in the impact zone of mining enterprises could be useful for other fields of the non-ferrous metals with high lithological–geochemical heterogeneity of the territory. It suggests the need of accounting for the geological diversity and specific features of metallogeny of an area. Geochemical indices local enrichment factor/local depletion factor should be calculated against the individual background values for each soil-forming rock. Such approach allows more accurate assessment of the degree of technogenic geochemical transformation of soils and the environmental hazard of pollution.45.

Context
Species show different sensitivity to habitat loss and fragmentation depending on their specialization. Populations of a species at the range margin are generally assumed to be more stenoecious than populations at the core of the distribution and should therefore be more sensitive to habitat fragmentation. Objectives
We evaluated the hypothesis that fragmentation effects species more strongly at the range periphery of their range compared to the core, resulting in lower genetic variability in comparable patch sizes and lower gene flow among populations. Methods
We compared the genetic diversity and structure of five sand lizard (Lacerta agilis) populations at the margin of its range in Bulgaria and of 11 populations at the core of its distribution in Germany. We based the analysis on microsatellites, comprising 15 loci in Bulgaria and 12 in Germany. Results
All diversity indices declined with patch size. For medium-sized patches all diversity indices were lower at the range periphery compared to the core, with two of them being significant. AICc based model selection showed strong support for core/periphery and patch size effects for observed and expected heterozygosity but only a patch size effect for allelic richness. There was no isolation-by-distance and each sampled population was allocated to a separate cluster with high probability for both countries, indicating that all populations are (almost) completely isolated. Conclusion
Our study indicates an increased sensitivity of a species to fragmentation at the periphery compared to the core of its distribution. This differential sensitivity should be accounted for when prioritizing species based on their fragmentation sensitivity in landscape management.47.

Purpose
The aim of this study was to characterize the conditions of the lateral migration of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and to identify the zones of their accumulation in soil catenas of ore-mining landscapes in the cities of Zakamensk (Buryat Republic, Russia) and Erdenet (Mongolia) which are situated in the basin of the Selenga River.Materials and methods
Eight soil catenas across the river valley with 31 pits in Zakamensk area and five catenas with 15 pits in Erdenet area were studied. Soil samples were collected in four landscape–geochemical positions: autonomous, on tops of the hills; trans-eluvial, on slopes of river valleys; trans-accumulative, at the footslopes; and superaqual, on the river floodplains. The total contents of 16 PTEs in the 148 samples were determined by mass spectrometry and by atomic emission spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma. Results and discussion
It is found that the chemical composition of undisturbed soils is greatly affected by the widespread distribution of volcanic rocks enriched with W, Mo, Cd, Bi, and Sr in Zakamensk and with V, Co, Sr, and As in Erdenet. The difference between geochemical positions is relatively small. Under the influence of technogenic loads in the cities, the concentrations of PTE change along soil catenas increases by an order of magnitude. For chalcophile elements—Mo, Bi, Pb, Sb, and Cu in Zakamensk and Cu, Zn, Mo, Cd, Sn, and W in Erdenet—the type of their lateral distribution in the soil catenas changes because of the intense migration from the tailings and facilities with water and air flows. The accumulation of PTEs takes place on the chemisorptive (V, Co, Ba, As, Cr, and Ni), gley (Mo and Sb), organomineral (Sn), and alkaline (Sr and W) lateral geochemical barriers (LGBs) confined to subordinate positions. The artificial technological LGBs are formed due to the increased content of sand derived from the tailings by water erosion in Zakamensk and the input of silt particles windblown from the technogenic sources in Erdenet. This causes the rise in the concentrations of major ore elements (Mo, W, and Cu) and the accompanying elements (Pb, Bi, As, Sr, Cr, and Ni).Conclusions
The results of soil–geochemical studies using the catenary approach and concept of LGBs made it possible to understand the main features of migration and fixation of PTEs in soils of the mining centers. They indicate the formation of a system of LGBs with intensive accumulation of major ore elements and associated ones in the subordinate landscapes of Zakamensk and Erdenet.49.

Widespread basaltic volcanism occurred in the region of the West Siberian Basin in central Russia during Permo-Triassic times. New 40Ar/39Ar age determinations on plagioclase grains from deep boreholes in the basin reveal that the basalts were erupted 249.4 +/- 0.5 million years ago. This is synchronous with the bulk of the Siberian Traps, erupted further east on the Siberian Platform. The age and geochemical data confirm that the West Siberian Basin basalts are part of the Siberian Traps and at least double the confirmed area of the volcanic province as a whole. The larger area of volcanism strengthens the link between the volcanism and the end-Permian mass extinction. 相似文献

This paper describes a new source of host-plant resistance to the Colorado Potato Beetle (CPB;Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say)) in a tetraploid potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) selection, ND2858-1. This hybrid was recorded as a cross betweenS. fendleri ssp.fendleri (A. Gray) and NDSU selection ND1215-1. Field defoliation of this and progeny clones from a subsequent cross to an cultivar was reduced by 50% to 90% in open-choice field screening plots. Progeny of ND2858-1 are vigorous, with high yield potential, and some clones have tuber glycoalkaloid content equivalent to commercial cultivars. These clones are male and female fertile and may be useful to other potato breeding programs. Further characterization of this resistance source is in progress. 相似文献
