An unusual case of urinary incontinence in an intersex West Highland white terrier

A 5-year-old neutered female West Highland white terrier dog was presented with a history of congenital urinary incontinence that had become refractory to medical management. Complex urogenital anomalies including urethrovestibular and vestibuloperineal fistulae with low vulvar position along with a penoclitoris were present. Vaginectomy with perineal urethral reconstruction resolved the incontinence.     

Fungicidal activity of the synthetic putrescine analogue, (E)-l,4-diaminobut-2-ene,and derivatives

The putrescine analogue. (E)-1,4-diaminobut-2-ene (E-BED), synthesized as the dihydrochloride salt, controlled five economically important crop pathogens, Erysiphe qraminis DC f.sp. hordei Marchal. Uromyces viciae-fabae (Pers.) Schroet, Botrytis fabae Sardina, Podosphaera leucotricha (Ell. & Ev.) Salm. and Phytophthora infestans (Mont) De Bary. The Z-isomer. Z-BED. was also fungicidal, although less so than E-BED. Post-inoculation treatment with E-BED gave greater control of powdery mildew infection on barley and rust and chocolate spot on broad bean than did pre-inoculation application. It was also effective in vitro against Botrytis cinerea Pers. ex Fr., Pyricularia oxyzae Br. & Cav. and Pyrenophora avenae Ito & Karibay. When P. avenae was grown in the presence of E-BED dihydrochloride at 81·5 mg litre^?1, growth was reduced by 58% and there were significant reductions in soluble ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) and S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase (AdoMetDC) activity. These changes were accompanied by a sevenfold increase in putrescine concentration, a 60% increase in spermine concentration and a 32% reduction in spermidine concentration within the fungal tissue.     

Challenging diagnosis--icterus associated with a single perforating duodenal ulcer after long-term nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug administration in a dog

A dog developed icterus, vomiting, and anorexia 2 wk after orthopedic surgery and treatment with meloxicam for approximately 1 y. Exploratory laparotomy revealed a single perforated duodenal ulcer. The most likely cause of the hyperbilirubinemia was intrahepatic cholestasis resulting from peritonitis associated with the perforation.     

Evaluation of the effects of penicillin G potassium and potassium chloride on the motility of the large intestine in horses

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate effects of IV administration of penicillin G potassium (KPEN) or potassium chloride (KCl) on defecation and myoelectric activity of the cecum and pelvic flexure of horses. ANIMALS: 5 healthy horses. PROCEDURE: Horses with 12 bipolar electrodes on the cecum and pelvic flexure received KPEN or KCl solution by IV bolus 4 hours apart. Each horse received the following: 2 X 10(7) U of KPEN (high-dose KPEN) followed by 34 mEq of KCl (high-dose KCl), 1 X 10(7) U of KPEN (low-dose KPEN) followed by 17 mEq of KCl (low-dose KCl), high-dose KCl followed by high-dose KPEN, and low-dose KCl followed by low-dose KPEN. Number of defecations and myoelectric activity were recorded for 60 minutes. The first three 5-minute segments and first four 15-minute segments of myoelectric activity were analyzed. RESULTS: Number of defecations during the first 15-minute segment was greater after high-dose KPEN treatment than after high-dose or low-dose KCl treatment. Compared with reference indexes, myoelectric activity was greater in the pelvic flexure for the first 5-minute segment after high-dose KCl treatment, in the cecum and pelvic flexure for the first 5-minute segment and in the pelvic flexure for the first 15-minute segment after low-dose KPEN treatment, and in the pelvic flexure for the first and second 5-minute segments and the first three 15-minute segments after high-dose KPEN treatment. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: IV administration of KPEN stimulates defecation and myoelectric activity of the cecum and pelvic flexure in horses. Effects of KPEN may be beneficial during episodes of ileus.     

Placental teratocarcinoma in a mare with possible metastasis to the foal.

A teratocarcinoma was diagnosed in the amnion of a 5-year-old Arabian mare that delivered a healthy, full-term foal. The foal died at 2.5 months of age as a result of metastasis of an undifferentiated component of the mass. This case is unique because it is the first reported case of placental teratocarcinoma in animals and the malignant component apparently metastasized to the foal resulting in its death.
