A 3-year-old, 4-kg, castrated male domestic shorthair cat presented with signs of progressive respiratory distress. Thoracic radiographs showed pulmonary edema and pleural effusion. Echocardiography revealed a perforate membrane immediately above the mitral valve that divided the left atrium into proximal and distal chambers. The left auricle was proximal to the dividing membrane and connected to the markedly enlarged proximal left atrial chamber, consistent with the diagnosis of supravalvular mitral stenosis (SMS). Position of the obstructing membrane relative to the left auricle distinguishes SMS from cor triatriatum sinister (CTS). Background
Doxorubicin is a common antineoplastic agent with dose‐dependent cardiotoxic adverse effects, and pre‐existing myocardial dysfunction is a contraindication to its use.Objectives
To systematically define the hemodynamic and biochemical alterations in dogs undergoing chemotherapy for newly diagnosed lymphoma and assess the reversibility of these alterations with fluid administration.Animals
Twenty‐one client‐owned dogs with newly diagnosed lymphoma were evaluated 1 week after induction of chemotherapy. Underlying degenerative valve disease was exclusionary. Eighteen healthy age‐ and weight‐matched dogs were used as controls.Methods
Physical examination, blood pressure by Doppler, echocardiography, and biochemical evaluation (routine serum biochemistry, plasma renin activity and aldosterone concentrations, plasma and urine osmolalities, and urine electrolyte concentrations) were measured in dogs with lymphoma and compared to controls. Dogs with lymphoma received crystalloids IV at 6 mL/kg/h for 24 hours. All variables were reassessed at 4 and 24 hours. Deuterium oxide dilution and bromide dilution were used to determine total body water and extracellular water space, respectively.Results
Baseline echocardiograms showed significantly smaller chamber dimensions in dogs with lymphoma compared to controls. These changes were reversed by fluid administration. Systolic blood pressure and urine sodium concentration were significantly increased, and bromide dilution space, PCV, urine specific gravity, and urine potassium concentration were significantly decreased compared to controls.Conclusion and Clinical Importance
Echocardiographic and biochemical abnormalities in dogs with lymphoma appear consistent with volume depletion, and may be the result of systemic hypertension and subsequent pressure natriuresis. 相似文献53.

The effects of a pomegranate byproduct (PBP, which includes the whole pomegranate fruit left after juice preparation) on atherosclerosis development in apolipoprotein E-deficient (E degrees ) mice were studied. Consumption of PBP (17 or 51.5 microg of gallic acid equiv/kg/day) by the mice resulted in a significant reduction in atherosclerotic lesion size by up to 57%. PBP consumption significantly reduced oxidative stress in the mice peritoneal macrophages (MPM): Cellular lipid peroxide content decreased by up to 42%, the reduced glutathione levels increased by up to 53%, and paraoxonase 2 lactonase activity increased by up to 50%, as compared to MPM from E degrees mice that consumed only water. Furthermore, oxidized low-density lipoprotein (Ox-LDL) uptake by the MPM was reduced by up to 19%. Similar results were observed also in vitro. Treatment of J774A.1 macrophages with PBP (10 or 50 micromol/L of total polyphenols) significantly decreased both cellular total peroxide content and Ox-LDL uptake. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 13-year-old llama was examined because of lethargy, inappetence, and syncope. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Physical examination revealed muffled heart and lung sounds and peripheral edema. Clinicopathologic abnormalities included lymphopenia, hyperglycemia, prerenal azotemia, mild hyponatremia, mild hypoalbuminemia, and high gamma-glutamyltransferase and creatine kinase activities. On ultrasonography, the liver appeared hyperechoic and ascites and pleural effusion were seen. Echocardiography revealed severe dilatation of the right atrium, right ventricle, and pulmonary artery; severe tricuspid regurgitation; and high right ventricular systolic pressure consistent with right-sided heart failure secondary to pulmonary hypertension. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: Treatment with furosemide was attempted, but because of failing health, the llama was euthanized 4 weeks later. Macronodular cirrhosis of the liver, glomerulonephritis, and intimal fibrosis and medial hypertrophy of muscular pulmonary arteries were seen on histologic examination of postmortem specimens. CLINICAL RELEVANCE:Findings in this case were similar to those reported for human patients with portopulmonary hypertension secondary to hepatic cirrhosis. Pulmonary hypertension secondary to hepatic disease should be considered in the differential diagnosis of right-sided heart failure. 相似文献

Whole rice has been widely studied due to the abundance of bioactive compounds in its pericarp. Some of the beneficial effects of these compounds on human health have been attributed to their antioxidant and other biological activities, such as enzyme inhibition. In this work, we evaluated the contents of total, soluble and insoluble phenolic compounds of 6 red and 10 non-pigmented genotypes of whole rice as well as their inhibitory effect on the activity of angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE). The effects of cooking on phenolics and their inhibitory activities were also investigated. Red genotypes showed high content of phenolics, mainly soluble compounds, at an average of 409.7 mg ferulic acid eq./100 g, whereas overall lower average levels (99.4 mg ferulic acid eq./100 g) at an approximate soluble/insoluble compound ratio of 1:1 were observed in non-pigmented rice. Pigmented rice displayed a greater inhibitory effect on ACE than non-pigmented rice. In fact, a significant correlation between the content of soluble phenolics and ACE inhibition was observed (r = 0.8985, p < 0.05). In addition to significantly reducing the levels of total phenolics and ACE inhibition, cooking altered the soluble/insoluble compound ratio, especially among red rice genotypes. 相似文献

Hereditary junctional epidermolysis bullosa (JEB) represents a subset of mechanobullous diseases associated with defective hemidesmosome/anchoring filament proteins leading to cleavage in the lamina lucida of the epidermal basement membrane. In humans, most cases of JEB have been related to a deficiency of either laminin-5, collagen XVII (BPAG2, BP180) or integrin β4.
We describe the existence of a previously unreported form of familial localized non-lethal JEB in German Shorthaired Pointer littermates. Acral, auricular and oral erosions and ulcers were observed. Severe ulceration of the footpads was present.
Skin biopsy specimens of non-lesional and lesional skin of affected dogs were screened for a defect in basement membrane proteins using indirect immunofluorescence and immunoperoxidase testing. Epidermal staining for laminin-5 and integrin α6β4 was similar in affected and normal control dogs. Lack of expression of collagen XVII was uniquely identified in all sections of JEB probands compared with normal control dogs.
The defective expression of collagen XVII is likely to be caused by mutation(s) of the COL17A1 gene, as previously reported in humans. This is, to date, the first report of a deficient basement membrane protein in canine JEB. 相似文献

Sixty-six spring and winter common wheat genotypes from Central Asian breeding programs were evaluated for grain concentrations
of iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn). Iron showed large variation among genotypes, ranging from 25 mg kg−1 to 56 mg kg−1 (mean 38 mg kg−1). Similarly, Zn concentration varied among genotypes, ranging between 20 mg kg−1 and 39 mg kg−1 (mean 28 mg kg−1). Spring wheat cultivars possessed higher Fe-grain concentrations than winter wheats. Zn-grain concentrations than spring genotypes. Within spring wheat, a strongly significant positive correlation was found
between Fe and Zn. Grain protein content was also significantly (P < 0.001) correlated with grain Zn and Fe content. There were strong significantly negative correlations between Fe and plant
height, and Fe and glutenin content. Similar correlation coefficients were found for Zn. In winter wheat, significant positive
correlations were found between Fe and Zn, and between Zn and sulfur (S). Manganese (Mn) and phosphorus (P) were negatively
correlated with both Fe and Zn. The additive main effects and multiplicative interactions (AMMI) analysis of genotype × environment
interactions for grain Fe and Zn concentrations showed that genotype effects largely controlled Fe concentration, whereas

Using the modified rapid amplification of cDNA ends (5'-RACE) approach, a fragment containing the 955 bp long 5'-regulatory region of the buckwheat storage globulin gene (FeLEG1) has been amplified from the genomic DNA of buckwheat. The entire fragment was sequenced, and the sequence was analyzed by computer prediction of cis-regulatory elements possibly involved in tissue-specific and developmentally controlled seed storage protein gene expression. This study aimed to comprehensively evaluate the effects of glycerine supplementation at various concentrations on performance, rumen fermentation, blood metabolites and product characteristics of beef and dairy cattle in vivo by using a quantitative meta-analysis approach. Meta-analysis was performed by integrating a total of 52 studies from 39 articles and 182 treatments into a database. Data were constructed into an intact database and did not distinguish between beef and dairy cattle, except for the parameters of production performance and product characteristics. Data summarized were analysed by using a statistical meta-analysis that employed a fixed effect of glycerine supplementation level and a random effect of various studies for both beef and dairy cattle. Significance of an effect was stated at the probability level of p < .05, and p < .1 was considered as a tendency of significant. Results revealed that there was a linear decrease on dry matter intake (p < .01) and daily gain (p < .05) of beef cattle with the increasing levels of glycerine supplementation. Glycerine supplementation did not decrease milk production of lactating dairy cows. Molar proportion of acetate in the rumen was decreased (p < .001), whereas propionate and butyrate proportions were increased (both at p < .001) by glycerine supplementation. Generally, glycerine did not change nutrient digestibility except that it reduced fibre digestibility (p < .001). Glycerine supplementation linearly lowered triglyceride and NEFA concentrations (both at p < .05) in the blood serum, but not other blood metabolites. Glycerine tended to linearly increase (p < .1) carcass percentage in beef cattle. Increasing dietary glycerine levels decreased milk fat (p < .01) but elevated milk protein (p < .001). Glycerine tended to increase milk lactose (p < .1) by following a quadratic pattern. The proportion of MUFA was increased quadratically by glycerine supplementation (p < .05), whereas glycerine tended to decrease SFA by following a quadratic pattern (p < .1). 相似文献
