Summary The relative sensitivity of the cotton plant to water stress throughout the growing season was determined to identify when irrigation will have the greatest beneficial effect. Daily plant water stress for 72 different data sets of water applications was correlated to corresponding yield criteria. The magnitude of significant correlation was interpreted as the degree of sensitivity. Plant water stress during square formation and early flowering resulted in fewer bolls to reach maturity, but this detrimental effect was cancelled by the development of bigger bolls due to greater lint growth. This resulted in better seedcotton and lint yields. Flower and boll senescence which resulted from water stress during flowering peak, however, inhibited seedcotton and lint yields. The most pronounced inhibiting effect stress had on yields, was during boll development well after the end of effective flowering, when it inhibited boll development. Stress during ripening of the bolls increased lint and boll development and consequently enhanced yields. When limited quantities of water is available, preference should be given to irrigation during boll development, then by irrigation when the first flowers appear, followed by irrigation during peak flowering. Water should be withheld from opening of the first bolls.  相似文献

Summary This paper reports on the design and performance of an irrigation system associated with a rain shelter. The shelter is used in the closed position as a platform for multiple spray lines. This system automatically supplies, at a specified time, water of specified depth and delivery rate, either uniformly or on a specified gradient across the sheltered area. Variations in crop water deficits and yields have conformed closely to imposed water gradients.  相似文献

Summary 15N balances were compared in rice (Oryza sativa L., cv. Calrose) grown under continuous flood (CF) or sprinkler irrigation. Two sprinkler treatments with irrigation frequencies of once (S1W) and thrice (S3W) per week were studied. Five atom %15N-labelled urea (60 kg N ha–1) was applied to microplots either 36 or 84 days after emergence (DAE). An equivalent amount of unlabelled urea was applied at the other application time, so that each microplot received a total of 120 kg N ha–1 in an equal split. There was no significant effect of irrigation treatment on recovery of urea N by straw. Straw recovery from urea applied 36 DAE was almost half that from an application 84 DAE, and time of urea application produced a similar effect on recovery in grain. Grain recovery in S1W was less than half that in CF and S3W for both application times. Total plant recovery of urea N applied 36 DAE was similar for all irrigation treatments (average 29%), but for urea applied 84 DAE total plant recovery in CF (67%) was significantly higher than in S1W (49%). Total N uptake in the plant tops was considerably lower in both the sprinkler-irrigated treatments when compared with CF, and this was mostly due to reduced soil N uptake in S3W (one-half) and S1W (one-third). The proportion of N derived from fertilizer in the plant tops increased from 40% in CF to 60% in S1W. Immobilization of applied N in the soil of the sprinkler-irrigated treatments was greater than in CF by factors of 1.5 (S3W) and 2 (S1W). Immobilization of urea N applied 36 DAE was almost 50% greater than immobilization of urea N applied 84 DAE. There was a trend for lower losses of fertilizer N with sprinkler irrigation (mean loss 18% of the applied N) compared with CF (27%). Within all irrigation treatments, the loss from urea applied 36 DAE was more than double the loss from urea applied 84 DAE. An additional study in CF compared the 15N balance for split application versus a single dose applied 36 DAE (before permanent flood). Split application resulted in significantly increased plant recovery of applied 15N, and this was largely associated with increased recovery in the grain. Slightly more fertilizer N was immobilized in the soil with a single application. The effect of application method on N loss was not significant.  相似文献

Summary Measurements of foliage and air wet- and dry-bulb temperatures were made over six differentially irrigated plots of Produra wheat grown at Phoenix, Arizona, in the spring of 1976. These data were used to evaluate a newly developed plant water stress index each day from the initiation of heading to the commencement of senescence. Daily measurements on total plant water potential were also obtained over this period; and after demonstrating how the atmospheric-induced component can be removed from these data, the resultant soil-induced component was plotted as a function of the new water stress index. The result was a simple linear relationship, which was found to be identical to one previously derived for alfalfa. A kinematic-wave model is developed for simulating the movement of soil moisture in unsaturated soils with plants. The model involves three free boundaries. Analytical solutions are derived when the plant roots are assumed to extract moisture at a constant rate and the upstream boundary condition is independent of time. Numerical solutions are the only resort when the moisture extraction and the upstream boundary condition both depend on time.  相似文献

The problem of real-time irrigation scheduling under limited water supply is considered. The goal is to develop an irrigation operation policy which maximizes crop yields and is responsive to current season changes in weather and other variables. Because irrigation decisions are sequential and dependent on crop and soil water status, and also because crop yields can only be known at the end of the season, the decisions are arrived at by a two-stage process. In the first or the design stage, irrigations are planned for the entire season at weekly intervals using historical data and an optimal irrigation scheduling model. In the second stage, the decisions for the subsequent weeks are revised each week after updating the status of the system with real time data up to that week and solving the irrigation optimization model once again for the new conditions. Thus, each week an irrigation decision is made, the entire planning horizon is kept in view. The procedure is illustrated by application to a case study.  相似文献

Summary This paper, second in a series of three, develops a mathematical model, using the volume balance approach, to simulate vertical and horizontal recession of border irrigation. An equation is proposed for computing Manning's roughness factor N in both laminar and transitional flow regimes in recession phases. The model has four parameters which can be determined experimentally. Experimental data from ten vegetated as well as nonvegetated borders were used to verify the model. Average difference (AD) between calculated and observed vertical recession times was less than 4.4 min, and between calculated and observed horizontal recession times less than 4.6 min for the ten experimental data sets. Average relative error (ARE) in computed horizontal recession was less than 13% for these data sets. The model was found to be especially accurate for Reynold's number between 1,800 and 2,500.  相似文献

Summary A field experiment was conducted to determine the effect of overirrigation on the growth characteristics and production of cotton. Over-irrigation, resulting in saturated soil conditions, was achieved by flood irrigation at different levels of soil water depletion on a soil with a low percolation rate. The highest seedcotton and lint yields were obtained from plants that did not experience over-irrigation at any time during the growing season; similar yields were obtained from plants that only experienced moderate over-irrigation after the onset of flowering (Table 9). The yield response could be related to branch growth, flowering rate and length of growing season (Tables 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8).  相似文献

Arable land in western Kenya is under considerable pressure from increasing human population. Rural households depend on farming for at least part of their livelihood, and poverty rates are among the highest in Kenya. Land is often depleted of nutrients, and for most farmers, access to inputs and markets is poor. There is a need to identify options that are manageable within the context of the farmer’s resource base and the household’s objectives that could improve farm household well-being. In this study we integrated qualitative informal participatory approaches with quantitative mathematical programming and biophysical simulation modelling. Households in four sub-locations in Vihiga District were clustered and pilot cases identified. Meetings were held with farmers to elicit their perceptions of what their ideal farm would look like, and how its performance might compare with their own farm’s performance. With farmers’ help, a range of scenarios was analysed, relating to changes in current enterprise mixes, changes in current farm sizes, and changes in prices of staples foods and cash crops. A considerable mismatch was found between farmers’ estimates of their own farm’s performance, and what was actually produced. There seems to be a threshold in farm size of 0.4 ha, below which it is very difficult for households to satisfy their income and food security objectives. Even for larger farms whose households are largely dependent on agriculture, the importance of a cash crop in the system is critical. There is a crucial role for extension services in making farmers aware of the potential impacts on farm revenue of modest changes in their farm management systems. We are monitoring nine households in the district, whose farmers have made some changes to their system in an attempt to increase household income and enhance food security.  相似文献
