Our nation lacks a critical mass of professionals trained to prevent and respond to food- and animal-related emergencies. Training veterinarians provides an immediate means of addressing this shortage of experts. Achievement of critical mass to effectively address animal-related emergencies is expedited by concurrent training of professionals and graduate students in related areas. Purdue University offers a Web-based Graduate Certificate in Veterinary Homeland Security to address this special area of need. The program is a collaborative effort among the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine, the Purdue Homeland Security Institute, the Indiana State Board of Animal Health, the Indiana State Police, and others with the overall goal of increasing capacity and preparedness to manage animal-related emergencies. Individuals with expertise in veterinary medicine, public health, animal science, or homeland security are encouraged to participate. The Web-based system allows courses to be delivered efficiently and effectively around the world and allows participants to continue their graduate education while maintaining full-time jobs. Participants enhance their understanding of natural and intentional threats to animal health, strengthen their skills in managing animal-health emergencies, and develop problem-solving expertise to become effective members of animal emergency response teams and of their communities. Students receive graduate credit from Purdue University that can be used toward the certificate and toward an advanced graduate degree. Currently, 70 participants from 28 states; Washington, DC; Singapore; and Bermuda are enrolled.  相似文献

Concern over uncontrollable wildfire in pinyon–juniper woodlands has led public land managers in the southwestern United States to seek approaches for mitigating wildfire hazard, yet little information is available concerning effectiveness and ecological responses of alternative treatments. We established a randomized block experiment at a pinyon–juniper site in northern Arizona and tested effects of no treatment (Control), thinning only (Thin), prescribed fire only (Burn), and thinning followed by prescribed fire (Thin + Burn) on overstory structure, hazardous fuels reduction, and woody understory responses. One year after implementation, mean trees per hectare (TPH) of Utah juniper (Juniperus osteosperma) and pinyon pine (Pinus edulis), and basal area (BA) of pinyon, were significantly (P < 0.05) less in Thin and Thin + Burn treatments than Control. Additionally, pinyon TPH was less in Burn than Control. Quadratic mean diameter was significantly greater in Thin and Thin + Burn than in Control and Burn treatments. Thinning shifted diameter distributions from uneven- to even-sized. Crown fuel load (CFL) of both pinyon and juniper was significantly lower in Thin and Thin + Burn compared with Control and Burn treatments. Thin, Burn, and Thin + Burn treatments resulted in significantly greater 1-h surface fuel loads compared with the Control. The Thin treatment resulted in significantly greater mean load of the 1000-h fuel class compared with Burn and Control treatments, but did not differ from Thin + Burn. Forest floor Oi (litter) layer was not significantly affected by the treatments but Oe + Oa (duff) depth was significantly less in the Burn treatment compared with Thin and Control. Live shrubs and tree regeneration showed no differences among treatments. We concluded that thinning and thinning followed by prescribed fire were effective approaches for fuels reduction; however, resulting stand structures may be novel and outside the historical range of variability. Prescribed fire alone had minimal effects on structure and fuels reduction. Woody shrubs and tree regeneration in the understory suggested that these treatments may not have long-term deleterious ecological effects.  相似文献

Deoxynivalenol and zearalenone are among the most prevalent toxins produced by Fusarium spp. They have been investigated in food and feed products for decades but rarely in the environment. We therefore established solid-phase extraction and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) methods to quantify these mycotoxins at trace concentrations in aqueous natural samples. In a model emission study, we inoculated a winter wheat field with Fusarium graminearum and subsequently monitored deoxynivalenol and zearalenone in its drainage water. Before during and after harvest in June and July 2007, these toxins were emitted in concentrations from 23 ng/L to 4.9 microg/L for deoxynivalenol and from not detected to 35 ng/L for zearalenone. Simultaneously, in July and August 2007, deoxynivalenol was also detected in a number of Swiss rivers in concentrations up to 22 ng/L and zearalenone was present in several river samples below the method quantification limit. Other mycotoxins might be emitted from Fusarium-infected fields as well, because some of them are produced in similar amounts as deoxynivalenol and zearalenone and exhibit similar or even higher water solubility than deoxynivalenol. The ecotoxicological consequences of the presence of mycotoxins in surface waters remain to be elucidated.  相似文献

Genetically improved crops with higher water productivity help maintaining and increasing agricultural production in drought-prone areas. Their development involves, as in the case of maize, selection for high grain yield and improved secondary traits. With the objective of better understanding the role and regulation of the morphology of drought adaptation, a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population of tropical maize (Zea mays L.) was evaluated in six field experiments under intermediate (IS) and severe (SS) drought stress at flowering and under well-watered (WW) conditions in Mexico. The analyses per water regime revealed 32 quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for the five measurements of relative content of leaf chlorophyll (CL), 25 for the five visual ratings of plant senescence (SEN), and 11 for the three measurements of electric root capacitance (RCT). Impressive clusters of QTLs were observed on chromosomes 2 (bins 2.03-05), 4 (bin 4.09), and 10 (bins 10.04-05), suggesting that a small number of genes control chlorophyll metabolism and plant senescence. The high CL and low SEN of the drought resistant parent are aspects of its high water productivity resulting from improved constitutive traits. Co-locations of QTLs for CL, SEN and RCT with QTLs for plant height (PHT), the anthesis-silking interval (ASI), and grain yield (GY) were observed in bins 1.06-07, 8.06, and 4.09 but not for the large QTL clusters on chromosomes 2 and 10, suggesting independent genetic control of reproductive traits. Still, the phenotypic data showed that high CL and low SEN were favorable for grain yield production under drought, while delayed SEN was associated with higher grain yield under WW conditions. CL and SEN are suitable to complement selection for drought tolerance in order to sustain future breeding progress.  相似文献

Traditional storage practices in developing countries cannot guarantee protection against major storage pests of staple food crops like maize, leading to 20-30% grain losses, particularly due to post-harvest insect pests and grain pathogens. As a result, smallholder farmers end up selling their grain soon after harvest, only to buy it back at an expensive price just a few months after harvest, falling in a poverty trap. The potential impact on poverty reduction and greater livelihood security will not be realized, however, if farmers are unable to store grains and sell surplus production at attractive prices. Apart from causing quantitative losses, pests in stored grain are also linked to aflatoxin contamination and poisoning. To address this problem, a metal silo was developed as a valid option and proven effective in protecting stored grains from attack by storage insect pests. A metal silo is a cylindrical structure, constructed from a galvanized iron sheet and hermetically sealed, killing any insect pests that may be present. The impact of metal silo technology in Africa, Asia and Latin America includes, improving food security, empowering smallholder farmers, enhancing income opportunities and job creation, and safeguarding the agro-ecosystems. The metal silo can be fabricated in different sizes, 100 kg-3000 kg holding capacity by trained local artisans, with the corresponding prices of $35 to $375. The use of metal silo, therefore, should be encouraged in order to prevent storage losses and enhance food security in developing countries.  相似文献

This study, using RT‐PCR, is the first comprehensive assessment since 1991 of a generic detection method for the Luteoviridae. Thirteen Luteoviridae species were detected using three separate sets of low‐degeneracy generic primers with RT‐PCR to amplify 68‐, 75‐ and 129/156‐bp regions of the Luteoviridae coat‐protein gene. Species detected include all members of the genus Luteovirus [Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV)‐PAV, BYDV‐PAS, BYDV‐MAV (129 and/or 156 bp amplicons), Soybean dwarf virus, Bean leafroll virus (68 bp amplicon)] and eight of nine species from the genus Polerovirus [Beet western yellows virus, Beet chlorosis virus, Beet mild yellowing virus, Turnip yellows virus, Potato leafroll virus, Cucurbit aphid‐borne yellows virus, Cereal yellow dwarf virus‐RPV (68‐bp amplicon) and Sugarcane yellow leaf virus (75‐bp amplicon)]. These primers were not able to detect Carrot red leaf virus, Sweet potato leaf speckling virus (both belong to unassigned Luteoviridae) and Pea enation mosaic virus‐1 (genus Enamovirus). A synthetic positive control containing all primer sequence priming sites was designed to facilitate this method as a generic tool for use with a variety of host plants. The Luteoviridae primers described in this study present a simple infection‐detection tool of benefit to biosecurity authorities in nursery‐stock surveillance, disease management or outbreak prevention, and may also be useful in detection of as‐yet undiscovered species within the Luteovirus and Polerovirus genera.  相似文献

Determining what factors explain the distribution of non-native invasive plants that can spread in forest-dominated landscapes could advance understanding of the invasion process and identify forest areas most susceptible to invasion. We conducted roadside surveys to determine the presence and abundance of 15 non-native plant species known to invade forests in western North Carolina, USA. Generalized linear models were used to examine how contemporary and historic land use, landscape context, and topography influenced presence and abundance of the species at local and regional scales. The most commonly encountered species were Microstegium vimineum, Rosa multiflora, Lonicera japonica, Celastrus orbiculatus, Ligustrum sinense, and Dioscorea oppositifolia. At the regional scale, distance to city center was the most important explanatory variable, with species more likely present and more abundant in watersheds closer to Asheville, NC. Many focal species were also more common in watersheds at lower elevation and with less forest cover. At the local scale, elevation was important for explaining the species’ presence, but forest cover and land-use history were more important for explaining their abundance. In general, species were more common in plots with less forest cover and more area reforested since the 1940s. Our results underscore the importance of considering both the contemporary landscape and historic land use to understand plant invasion in forest-dominated landscapes.  相似文献

To better understand the complexity of agricultural research, two Purdue University Libraries’ faculty members conducted a series of interviews with subjects from across the College of Agriculture. Interview questions addressed research methodologies and outputs, research data management, primary information resources, and other aspects of the research cycle and the researchers’ professional lives. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using nVivo software. The results are summarized and presented here.  相似文献

In a previous report, it was suggested that intrauterine crowding impaired fetal erythropoiesis and that fetal erythropoiesis was accelerated in Meishan pigs during early pregnancy. Because these conclusions were based on limited numbers of observations, the present experiment was undertaken to provide a more extensive investigation of these phenomena. Intact white crossbred gilts, unilaterally hysterectomized-ovariectomized (UHO) white crossbred gilts, and intact Meishan gilts (n = 13 to 16 per group) were mated after at least one estrous cycle of normal duration (17 to 23 d). Gilts were laparotomized at d 35 of pregnancy, the uterine horns were exteriorized and opened near each fetus, and a blood sample was collected from each fetus. The uterine horn was then surgically removed, and each fetus and placenta was weighed. All fetal blood samples were measured for hematocrit, red blood cell number, and hemoglobin. Erythropoietin and the percentages of nucleated cells and reticulocytes were also measured in blood samples from the largest and smallest living fetus in each litter. Fetal hematocrits were not affected by treatment. Blood cell counts were greater (P < 0.01) in fetuses of Meishan gilts than in White crossbred intact or UHO gilts. Hemoglobin was less (P < 0.01) in fetuses of Meishan gilts than in fetuses of White crossbred intact or UHO gilts. The percentages of nucleated (immature) cells and reticulocytes were both less (P < 0.01) in fetuses of Meishan intact gilts. Erythropoietin was also lower (P < 0.01) in fetuses of Meishan gilts. As observed previously, fetal weight was correlated (r = 0.38; P < 0.01) with blood hemoglobin concentration. These results confirm that fetal erythropoiesis in Meishan gilts is accelerated compared with White crossbred gilts. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that faster blood cell development could be beneficial to fetal survival in swine.  相似文献
