Fetal weight and the placenta of sheep at high altitude (HA) are affected by hypoxia. Placental changes (an increase in placental size and vascularization) are greater in ewes from populations that have lived for several generations at HA than in those exposed during just 1 gestation. This study investigated placental expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), 2 molecules involved in placental angiogenesis that could be upregulated by hypoxia. Two groups of ewes were maintained at HA (3589 m) during pregnancy: HA-native ewes (group HH) and ewes native to lowlands but moved to HA immediately after the diagnosis of pregnancy (group LH). A control group (LL) was kept at sea level. Near term, placentomes were removed, weighed, and processed for immunohistochemical detection of VEGF and eNOS, as well as for vascular area measurement. Placental weight was significantly higher in the HH group than in the LH and LL groups; between the latter 2 groups there was no significant difference. The placental area occupied by vasculature was significantly greater in both the HA groups than in the LH group; the number of placentomes was greatest in the LL group. The density of VEGF and eNOS in the placentome tissue was significantly greater in both HA groups than in the LL group. Although the density of VEGF was significantly lower in the HH group than in the LH group, no differences were observed in eNOS density between the HH and LH animals. These results demonstrate that chronic hypoxia upregulates the expression of placental VEGF and eNOS, suggesting an important role of these molecules in the placental response to HA hypoxia. In addition, an attenuated response to hypoxia in VEGF synthesis may be part of the long-term process of adaptation to HA. 相似文献

Over the past two decades the growth of the organic sector has been accompanied by a shift away from first party, or peer
review, systems of certification and towards third party certification, in which a disinterested party is responsible for
the development of organic standards and the verification of producer compliance. This paper explores some of the limitations
of the third party certification model and presents the case of Mexico as an example of how an alternative form of participatory
certification has emerged. The paper suggests that participatory guarantee systems (PGS) are reflective of the growing “beyond
organic” movement, which focuses on reconstructing the local and re-embedding food systems into their socio-ecological contexts.
It argues that PGS offers a number of benefits for producers and consumers, particularly in the South, but that it faces a
number of challenges as well, such as a lack of formal recognition, social conflicts and dependence on donated resources. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of beta-1,3/1,6-D-glucan (Biolex-Beta HP) on the phagocytic activity and oxidative metabolism of peripheral blood granulocytes and monocytes in rats intoxicated by cyclophosphamide. The experimental material comprised 40 adult Wistar rats aged 14 weeks, divided into two equal groups, a control group and an experimental group, each of 20 adult rats, including 10 males and 10 females. In the course of 3 successive days, 20 rats from the experimental group were administered cyclophosphamide intramuscularly at a dose of 50 mg/kg body weight/day. On the 8th day of the experiment, 10 control group (K) rats and 10 experimental group (C) rats were sacrificed. Arterial blood samples were collected and diluted with heparin to determine and compare the phagocytic activity (Phatogest) and oxidative metabolism (Bursttest) of peripheral blood granulocytes and monocytes by flow cytometry. Starting on the 8th day of the experiment, the feed of the remaining 10 rats from the experimental group (C+G) and 10 rats from the control group (G) was supplemented with Biolex-Beta HP at a dose of 50 mg/kg body weight/day for 14 consecutive days. On day 22, arterial blood samples were collected from all (C+G) and (C) group rats, diluted with heparin to determine and compare the phagocytic activity and oxidative metabolism of peripheral blood granulocytes and monocytes by flow cytometry. The results showed that Biolex-Beta HP modulated the phagocytic activity and oxidative metabolism of blood neutrophils and monocytes suppressed by cyclophosphamide in rats. The immunorestoring activity of Biolex-Beta HP was observed in this study. 相似文献

The growth and nutritional status of 97 hybrid chestnut plantations on former agricultural land and forest land were studied
in relation to site conditions (climatic variables and soil properties). A single family of curves was obtained for classifying
the early height growth of hybrid and sweet chestnut. Soil limitations and nutrient deficiencies were evident in the former
forest land, whereas the agricultural soils were found to be generally suitable for growing chestnut. The stands with highest
growth rates were characterized by high foliar concentrations of K, P and Ca. Successful growth of the plantations was always
related to high summer precipitation, low elevation and absence of long periods of risk of frost. The results confirm the
adaptability of chestnut to most sites where it has been planted for timber production. 相似文献

The African tulip tree, Spathodea campanulata Beauv., is an introduced species forming novel forest types in Puerto Rico. These forests develop naturally after deforestation,
agricultural use and land abandonment, and there are many questions as to their ecological characteristics. We sampled structure
and species composition of large, small, and juvenile trees (≥10, ≥2.5 to <10, and <2.5 cm diameter at breast height, respectively)
in nine secondary forests dominated by S. campanulata on alluvial, karst, and volcanic substrates in northcentral Puerto Rico. No differences were found in S. campanulata forest structure between substrates. Of a total of 79 species found, 17 were introduced. Forests on karst and alluvium had
the highest and lowest global species richness, respectively. Species richness increased from large to small to juvenile trees
in most sites, but more so on karst. The percentage of introduced species was inversely related to species richness of tree
size classes on all substrate types. The dominance of S. campanulata in the large tree size class was highest and lowest in alluvial and volcanic sites, respectively, and decreased from large
to small to juvenile trees on all substrate types. Species richness of S. campanulata forests is lower than that of native forests on equivalent substrates. Although land use history affects composition, the
juvenile tree species established in S. campanulata forests seems to correspond to the geological substrate were sites are found. This study shows S. campanulata restores forest structure and native tree species on abandoned agriculture and grazing lands in Puerto Rico. Management of

Organic acids or their salts are promising feed additives for aquatic animals to improve growth performance. We determined the effect of supplementing diets with sodium salts (formate, acetate, lactate, propionate, butyrate, fumarate, succinate and citrate) on trypsin and chymotrypsin activities, in vitro digestibility and zootechnical performance in the whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). Shrimp trypsin and chymotrypsin activity increased in the presence of acetate and propionate and decreased in the presence of lactate and citrate. The highest in vitro protein digestibility of the experimental diets, using shrimp enzymes, was obtained for diets containing fumarate and succinate, which was significantly greater than the control diet (no supplements). In a growth trial, the highest final weights were in shrimp fed diets supplemented with fumarate, succinate, butyrate and propionate, increasing 53%, 46%, 38% and 29%, respectively, compared to the control. Shrimp that were fed diets with fumarate digested more feed and had a feed conversion ratio 23% higher than the control shrimp. Shrimp survival did not differ among treatments. We concluded that organic salts in the diet modify digestive enzymatic activity and in vitro protein digestibility of whiteleg shrimp. Fumarate, succinate, butyrate and propionate have potential as feed additives for L. vannamei. 相似文献

Solanum commersonii is a wild species related to the cultivated potato. Some S. commersonii genotypes have been proven to be resistant to the pathogenic bacteria Ralstonia solanacearum, which causes damage in potato and other economically important crops. Here an expression analysis of the response of a resistant S. commersonii genotype against R. solanacearum was performed using microarrays. The aims of this work were to elucidate the molecular processes involved in the interaction, establish the timing of the response, and contribute to identify genes related to the resistance. The response to the treatment was already initiated at 6 h post-inoculation (hpi) and was established at 24 hpi; during this period, a high number of genes was differentially expressed and several candidate genes for the resistance of S. commersonii to R. solanacearum were identified. At an early stage, the photosynthetic process was highly repressed and several genes encoding proteins related to reactive oxygen species (ROS) production were differentially expressed. The induction of ERF and ACC-oxidase genes related to the ethylene pathway and PR1 related to the salicylic acid pathway suggested the induction of both pathways, and back up the previously reported hemibiotrophic nature of the pathogen. Five genes related to plant defence and observed to be differentially expressed at the first two time points were validated by real time PCR. This work gives a glimpse to the molecular processes involved in S. commersonii resistance and identifies the species as a valuable genetic source for potato breeding against bacterial wilt. 相似文献

In Argentina, Thecaphora frezii is the causal agent of peanut smut, causing severe yield losses in peanut growing areas. In this work sequence data of the large ribosomal subunit (28S rDNA) of four T. frezii specimens from different production regions are provided. A fragment of about 650 bp was amplified by PCR from each of the isolates analyzed. The analysis of the sequences demonstrated 100 % identity among the four specimens and 92–96.3 % identity with sequences of other species of Thecaphora. This is the first study on molecular sequences of this pathogen. 相似文献
