Background  

Variation in carrying capacity and population return rates is generally ignored in traditional studies of population dynamics. Variation is hard to study in the field because of difficulties controlling the environment in order to obtain statistical replicates, and because of the scale and expense of experimenting on populations. There may also be ethical issues. To circumvent these problems we used detailed simulations of the simultaneous behaviours of interacting animals in an accurate facsimile of a real Danish landscape. The models incorporate as much as possible of the behaviour and ecology of skylarks Alauda arvensis, voles Microtus agrestis, a ground beetle Bembidion lampros and a linyphiid spider Erigone atra. This allows us to quantify and evaluate the importance of spatial and temporal heterogeneity on the population dynamics of the four species.  相似文献

The rapid decline in Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus, Gadidae) biomass following multiple Gulf of Alaska marine heatwaves (2014–2016 and 2019) may be one of the most dramatic documented changes in a sustainably managed marine fishery. As such, fisheries managers are exploring new recruitment paradigms for Pacific cod under novel environmental conditions. In this review, we address the challenges of managing and forecasting Pacific cod populations in the Eastern Pacific where thermal habitats for early life stages are undergoing varying rates of change across space and time. We use observational data to examine changes in distribution, abundance and demographics of the population from 1993 to 2020, and model contemporary and future changes of thermal habitat for both spawning success and age-0 juvenile growth potential. Results indicate that reduced spawning habitat and early life stage abundance may be a precursor to regional population decline, but the recent apparent increases in size-at-age of pre-recruits will have unknown impacts on future recruitment in these regions. We contend that continued monitoring of early life stages will be necessary to track changes in phenology and growth that likely determine size-at-age and the survival trajectories of year classes into the adult population. These include complex size- and temperature-dependent energetics spanning seasonal habitats through the first winter. Climate-ready management of Pacific cod will, therefore, require new process investigations beyond single-season surveys focused on one-life stage.  相似文献

Drip irrigation systems and irrigation strategies like deficit irrigation (DI) and partial root drying (PRD) are potential water saving irrigation systems and strategies. This paper analyses the Serbian farmer's economic incentive to use these water saving systems and strategies instead of the present sprinkler irrigation. The analysis is a partial budgeting analysis, based on irrigation application efficiency from the literature, standard figures for power requirements, pumping efficiency and friction losses for various sources of water and pressure requirements, yields and water use from recent Serbian field experiments, as well as prices and cost structures for potatoes collected in the Belgrade region. The analysis shows that changing the present system and strategy can save a significant amount of water (almost 50%). At the same time, however, irrigation costs are also significantly increased (more than doubled), and the total production costs are increased by 10% (deficit drip irrigation) and 23% (PRD). Increased taxes on water, investment subsidies, increased energy prices, and an increased yield or yield quality may provide incentives for farmers to change to new systems and strategies. The analysis indicates that a 0.80 to 1.97 € m−3 water tax is needed to make deficit drip irrigation and PRD profitable. The socioeconomic cost of providing water for irrigation and the alternative value of saved water are probably not that high. Thus, water taxation may not be a socioeconomic efficient means to improve the irrigation water productivity of Serbian potato production. Drip irrigation and PRD may, however, also increase the yield quality, and a 10-23% quality premium (price increase) is needed to make deficit drip irrigation and PRD profitable.  相似文献

The allergen content in Alstroemeria was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in order to investigate breeding possibilities for reducing the risk of contact dermatitis caused by Alstroemeria. The potentials of both cross breeding and mutagenesis were studied. The allergens (6-tuliposide A, tuliposide D and tulipalin A) were determined in leaves, stems, and flowers. 6-Tuliposide A was found in the highest amounts in all plant parts and tulipalin A was mainly present in the flowers. Environmental effects (season and growth conditions) on the allergen content were significant. For the concentration of allergens coefficients of variation generally were above 40% within populations of single species. Positive correlations for 6-tuliposide A between plant parts and between 6-tuliposide A and tulipalin A within leaves and stems were found. Tuliposide D was not correlated with the other allergens. Significant narrow sense heritabilities were found for total allergen content as well as for 6-tuliposide A and tuliposide D, but not for tulipalin A. The heritability was higher for total allergen content and tuliposide D as compared to 6-tuliposide A. Mutagenesis was able to reduce the content of 6-tuliposide A. Allergen production in Alstroemeria seems multigenically controlled. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

In this study, we demonstrate how an event that is initially frightening to Atlantic salmon is turned to a positive stimulus through habituation and associative learning. The study was carried out in four commercial sized tanks (5 m3) with near industry densities (>550 fish, 16 kg m−3), using a delay conditioning procedure with an aversive flashing light as the conditioned stimulus and food reward as the unconditioned stimulus. By using video image analysis of the distribution of the fish in the tanks, the changes in behaviour from trial to trial could be documented in great detail. The current study documents the change in behaviour across the individual conditioning trials, clearly showing the step-by-step nature of the transition. The salmon needed more than 26 trials to become fully habituated to the flashing light but showed clear anticipatory behaviour already after about 19 trials. This demonstrates that the learning process is a combination of habituation and associative learning.  相似文献

To determine the effect of maturation on flesh quality, 20 Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) consisting of mature and immature fish of both sexes were killed on site, exsanguinated and stored on ice. After 6 days of storage, the fish was gutted and filleted before colour, texture hardness and shear force were evaluated to determine the effect of maturation. Results show that mature males excreted black mucus from the skin during ice storage, while a greyish mucus was observed from immature fish. Mature fish had approximately 2% lower slaughter yield and 6% lower fillet yield compared with immature fish. The fillets from mature males were significantly harder compared with fillets from immature fish and the muscle structure proved to be stronger as an increased fracturability was observed in mature fish. In colour, fillets from mature fish proved to have a whiter appearance (L*) than immature fish, while no difference was seen in a* and b* values. We conclude that the physiological changes associated with maturation affects the end quality, and may be related to slower growth.  相似文献

Juvenile Atlantic halibut, Hippoglossus hippoglossus (initial weight (SD) 191.3 (±44.7)) g, were reared for 99 days at a constant temperature of 11°C and subjected to three different light regimes from 13 September to 21 December: continuous light (LD24:0), simulated natural photoperiod of Bergen (60°25′N, LDN) and constant 20 h light:4 h dark (LD20:4). The fish reared on the different photoperiod regimes differed in their growth patterns as juveniles exposed to long days, i.e. LD20:4 and LD24:0, exhibited faster growth than those experiencing a natural photoperiod. The LD20:4 group showed the highest average specific growth rate (0.72% body weight day?1), whereas fish on LDN displayed the lowest average specific growth rate (0.60% body weight day?1). The final mean weights of the LD20:4 and the LD24:0 groups were 15% and 12% higher than those of the LDN group. Dividing the duration of the experiment into three time periods shows that the LD20:4 and LD24:0 had a higher feed conversion efficiency (FCE) as compared with the LDN group during the first and the last period, while a reversed situation was observed in the second period. Our data indicate a larger variation in growth rates among individuals in the best‐performing groups (here LD20:4 and LD24:0). This may indicate that formation of size hierarchies is more pronounced in groups with more homogenous growth (here LDN). Overall, our findings indicate that extended light regimes result in faster growth and better feed conversion in juvenile Atlantic halibut. In line with findings on other flatfish species, this supports the concept that constant long day:short night or continuous light regimes should be used by the farmer in order to maximize growth and improve feed conversion in Atlantic halibut.  相似文献

Intensive fish production worldwide has increased the risk of infectious diseases. However, before any infection can be established, pathogens must penetrate the primary barrier. In fish, the three major routes of infection are the skin, gills and gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The GI tract is essentially a muscular tube lined by a mucous membrane of columnar epithelial cells that exhibit a regional variation in structure and function. In the last two decades, our understanding of the endocytosis and translocation of bacteria across this mucosa, and the sorts of cell damage caused by pathogenic bacteria, has increased. Electron microscopy has made a valuable contribution to this knowledge. In the fish‐farming industry, severe economic losses are caused by furunculosis (agent, Aeromonas salmonicida spp. salmonicida) and vibriosis [agent, Vibrio (Listonella) anguillarum]. This article provides an overview of the GI tract of fish from an electron microscopical perspective focusing on cellular damage (specific attack on tight junctions and desmosomes) caused by pathogenic bacteria, and interactions between the ‘good’ intestinal bacteria [e.g. lactic acid bacteria (LAB)] and pathogens. Using different in vitro methods, several studies have demonstrated that co‐incubation of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) foregut (proximal intestine) with LAB and pathogens can have beneficial effects, the cell damage caused by the pathogens being prevented, to some extent, by the LAB. However, there is uncertainty over whether or not similar effects are observed in other species such as Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.). When discussing cellular damage in the GI tract of fish caused by pathogenic bacteria, several important questions arise including: (1) Do different pathogenic bacteria use different mechanisms to infect the gut? (2) Does the gradual development of the GI tract from larva to adult affect infection? (3) Are there different infection patterns between different fish species?
