Changes in sorption/bioavailability of two metabolites, imidacloprid-urea {1-[(6-chloro-3-pyridinyl)methyl]-2-imidazolidinone} and imidacloprid-guanidine {1-[(6-chloro-3-pyridinyl)methyl]-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-2-amine} of the insecticide imidacloprid {1-[(6-chloro-3-pyridinyl)-methyl]-N-nitro-2-imidazolidinimine} with aging in different soils were determined. Soil moisture was adjusted to -33 kPa and 14C- and analytical-grade imidacloprid-urea and imidacloprid-guanidine were added to the soil at a rate of 1.0 mg kg-1. Spiked soils were incubated at 25°C for 8 weeks. Replicate soil samples were periodically extracted successively with 0.01 N CaCl2, acetonitrile, and 1 N HCl. Imidacloprid-urea sorption, as indicated by sorption coefficient values, was highest in the soil with highest organic C content, and increased by an average factor of 2.6 in three soils during the 8-week incubation period. Imidacloprid-guanidine sorption increased by a factor of 2.3 in the same soils. The increase in sorption was the result of a decrease in the metabolite extractable with CaCl2 (solution phase); the amount of metabolite extractable with acetonitrile and HCl (sorbed phase) did not significantly change with incubation time. It appears the increase in sorption was because the rate of degradation in solution and on labile sites was faster than the rate of desorption from the soil particles. It may have also been due to metabolite diffusion to less accessible or stronger binding sites with time. Regardless of the mechanism, these results are further evidence that increases in sorption during pesticide aging should be taken into account during characterization of the sorption process for mathematical models of pesticide degradation and transport. 相似文献

Attrition and fragmentation of natural habitats remains one of the most persistent problems for conservationists. Exactly how habitat loss leads to the loss of biodiversity is not easily pinned down, and varies across species, taxonomic groups and landscapes. Integrating theory with conservation on the ground is challenging due to the multi-faceted nature of the problem. Here, we briefly highlight and review key scientific results from an ongoing long-term ornithological research project in the highly fragmented and threatened forests of the Taita Hills, SE Kenya. The findings point to the inability of birds to disperse between remnant habitats, or to adjust to changing habitat quality as the main mechanisms underlying adverse effects of forest loss on birds. We integrated our findings and their implications for conservation in a recent stakeholders’ workshop bringing together scientists, government officials and members of the local community in the Taita Hills. During this workshop the local community and the government voiced their priorities concerning these forest resources, by identifying the pressing problems and suggesting best avenues of mitigating them. We discuss how the scientific results and recommendations from a biodiversity standpoint are being translated into actual conservation, taking into account the views and priorities of other key stakeholders. This exemplifies one of the few unique situations in eastern Africa where enormous effort is being made towards bridging the chronic gap between scientists, government and local communities concerning the conservation of natural resources. People in vast areas of the tropics suffer from vitamin A deficiency, resulting in progressive eye damage and eventually leading
to blindness. Improving the content of vitamin A precursors in staple crops could alleviate or solve such a problem. The objective
of this work was to study the range of variability for carotene content in a sub-set of the global cassava germplasm collection,
and to determine the inheritance of carotenes, as well as their stability in response to different processing methodologies.
Genotypes with more than 2 mg carotenes/100 g of fresh roots have been selected as parental material for population development.
Although root colour is highly correlated with carotene content, a quantitative evaluation of genotypes selected by colour
is required in order to increase the efficiency of selection. Relatively few major genes are involved in the determination
of carotene accumulation in cassava roots. Stability of carotenes in response to different processing methods is genotypically
dependant, representing a trait to be evaluated after selecting for high carotene concentration in fresh roots. The results
from this work have provided the basis for defining future strategies for the improvement of the nutritional quality of cassava.

Introduction
Tree breeding is giving an increasing attention to wood properties in order to better fit the requirements of the saw, board, pulp and paper industries. In particular, it has been reported that lignin and cellulose content display moderate to high heritabilities making them prime candidates for genetic improvement of wood chemistry. Moreover, these traits have been shown to be negatively correlated at both phenotypic and genetic levels. The hoverfly Episyrphus balteatus (Degeer) is one of the most abundant predators of the cabbage aphid (Brevicoryne brassicae (L.)) in brussels sprouts in Belgium. In the current laboratory study, the toxicity of several insecticides applied at maximum
recommended field rates was investigated on the larvae of E. balteatus. Two- to 3-day-old larvae were confined in glass petri dishes with dry residues of freshly applied insecticides. Their mortality
was checked daily until adult emergence. Sub-lethal effects were investigated by assessing the reproductive performance of
adult hoverflies, originating from the surviving larvae. Of the five compounds tested, only pirimicarb caused 100% larval
mortality. The corrected mortality for spinosad was 60% and the adults obtained from the surviving larvae did not succeed
in laying eggs. Therefore, pirimicarb and spinosad were rated “harmful” (International Organization for Biological and Integrated
Control of Noxious Animals and Plants (IOBC) category 4) for the larvae of E. balteatus. In contrast, flonicamid, thiacloprid and spirotetramat yielded much lower mortality percentages. The hatching rate of hoverfly
eggs treated with flonicamid was 25.6% vs 48.7% in the control. Hence, flonicamid was rated “slightly harmful” (IOBC category
2). The fertility of adults treated as larvae with thiacloprid or spirotetramat was not affected (IOBC category 1). These
laboratory trials suggest that thiacloprid and spirotetramat can be used safely in integrated pest management programs to
control the cabbage aphid. Pirimicarb, spinosad and flonicamid should be tested in semi-field and field situations to assess
