THE ROLE OF "FOLIC ACID" AND BIOTIN IN THE UTILIZATION OF PANTOTHENIC ACID BY THE RAT

The addition of succinylsulfathiazole to highly purified diets containing all dietary factors known to be required by the rat, including pantothenic acid, results in the appearance of signs of severe pantothenic acid deficiency, including achromotrichia and porphyrin-caked whiskers. These changes are accompanied by a marked reduction in the pantothenic acid content of the liver, and are corrected by the inclusion in such diets of crystalline biotin and "folic acid" concentrates. The utilization of pantothenic acid by the rat appears to depend on the availability of biotin and "folic acid." Under normal conditions these are supplied by the diet and synthesized by intestinal bacteria. A hypothesis is offered in explanation of the chromotrichial actions of "folic acid," biotin and p-aminobenzoic acid.     

Nickel: an essential micronutrient for legumes and possibly all higher plants

Soybean plants deprived of nickel accumulated toxic concentrations of urea (2.5 percent) in necrotic lesions on their leaflet tips. This occurred regardless of whether the plants were supplied with inorganic nitrogen or were dependent on nitrogen fixation. Nickel deprivation resulted in delayed nodulation and in a reduction of early growth. Addition of nickel (1 microgram per liter) to the nutrient media prevented urea accumulation, necrosis, and growth reductions. This evidence suggests that nickel is essential for soybeans and possibly for higher plants in general.     

Recognition by human V gamma 9/V delta 2 T cells of a GroEL homolog on Daudi Burkitt's lymphoma cells

All human gamma delta T cells coexpressing the products of the variable (V) region T cell receptor (TCR) gene segments V gamma 9 and V delta 2 recognize antigens from mycobacterial extracts and Daudi cells. Exogenous and endogenous ligands on the cell surface, homologous to the groEL heat shock family, induced reactivities that resembled superantigen responses in this major subset of human peripheral blood gamma delta T cells. Stimulation of human V gamma 9/V delta 2 T cells is not restricted by human leukocyte antigens (HLA), including nonpolymorphic beta 2-microglobulin (beta 2M)-associated class Ib molecules. These data may be important for understanding the role of gamma delta T cells in autoimmunity and in responses to microorganisms and tumors.
