Because quantitative field estimates of potato (Solarium tuberosum L.) yield losses attributable to ozone (O3) air pollution damage in California need to be assessed, the antioxidant compound N-[-2-(2-oxo-l-imidazolidiny l)ethyl]-N′-phenylurea (EDU or DPX-4891) was evaluated for suitability in estimating these yield losses and in differentiating O3-susceptible from O3-resistant cultivars. Differential susceptibility of two cultivars, ‘Centennial Russet’ (O3sensitive) and ‘White Rose’ (O3-resistant), to O3 was confirmed in greenhouse experiments. Five weekly 5-hour treatments with 25 parts per hundred million O3 reduced tuber yield of Centennial Russet by 32% but did not reduce the yield of White Rose. In the absence of O3 under greenhouse conditions, EDU had no observable effect on shoot dry weight, tuber number, or tuber yield of either cultivar, suggesting that EDU does not materially affect plant growth in the absence of O3 at the treatment levels used and under the conditions herein. In field experiments conducted at the University of California at Riverside (UCR) and in commercial fields of Kern County (KC), untreated Centennial Russet and White Rose plants produced total tuber yields of 174 and 512 q/ha, respectively at UCR and 268 and 498 q/ha, respectively, at KC. At UCR, EDU applied at the highest rate—17.8 kg/ha—increased marketable and total tuber yields of Centennial Russet by 208 and 188 q/ha, respectively, and increased specific gravity by 0.013. White Rose was not affected by EDU. Averaged over four KC experiments, EDU application at 8.9 kg/ha increased Centennial Russet marketable and total tuber yields by 40 (from 214) and 45 (from 268) q/ha, respectively, whereas White Rose was not affected and averaged 398 (marketable) and 491 (total) q/ha.  相似文献

Mitogenic influence of human R-spondin1 on the intestinal epithelium   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Several described growth factors influence the proliferation and regeneration of the intestinal epithelium. Using a transgenic mouse model, we identified a human gene, R-spondin1, with potent and specific proliferative effects on intestinal crypt cells. Human R-spondin1 (hRSpo1) is a thrombospondin domain-containing protein expressed in enteroendocrine cells as well as in epithelial cells in various tissues. Upon injection into mice, the protein induced rapid onset of crypt cell proliferation involving beta-catenin stabilization, possibly by a process that is distinct from the canonical Wnt-mediated signaling pathway. The protein also displayed efficacy in a model of chemotherapy-induced intestinal mucositis and may have therapeutic application in gastrointestinal diseases.  相似文献

The environmental behavior and fate of tributyltin (TBT) in the northern Ariake Sea, resulting from the use of TBT-containing antifouling paints on hulls of ships, pleasure crafts and docking facilities, was assessed by numerical simulations. First, a mathematical model was devised on the basis of a non-steady state equilibrium, one box multi-compartment model consisting of the surface micro-layer, the water column, the mud-layer, and the bottom sediment compartments. The movement of TBT among the four compartments was modeled by resuspension of bottom mud, deposition of suspended sediment, film penetration and water advection in each compartment. Furthermore, a one-dimensional diffusion equation was introduced into the bottom sediment compartment to calculate profile distribution of TBT. The reactivity of TBT considered within the compartments included biological degradation, adsorption to particulate matter and diffusion. Next, the optimal amount of past TBT loads, reflecting the recent observations of TBT concentration in the waters and sediments of the northern Ariake Sea, was searched by a simple genetic algorithm. The relative sensitivity of various model parameters were also determined to identify the more important parameters for estimating the environmental behavior and fate of TBT. Finally, the future status of TBT contamination of the northern Ariake Sea was predicted assuming the discontinued use of TBT-containing antifouling paints. Despite its simple model structure relative to hydraulics, it was concluded that this multi-compartment model adequately estimated the environmental behavior and fate of TBT.  相似文献

Gonadotropin-inhibiting hormone (GnIH), observed in quail as a member of the RFamide neuropeptide family, suppresses luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion from the avian pituitary. Rats and cattle have an active gene of another member of the RFamide neuropeptide family, termed RFamide-related peptide-3 (RFRP-3), although bovine RFRP-3 is different from that of rats in both length and amino-acid sequence. A single injection of GnIH or RFRP-3 inhibited LH secretion in rodents, which continued for various periods. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of bovine C-terminal octapeptide of RFRP-3 (RFRP-3-8) on LH secretion from cultured anterior pituitary (AP) cells of cattle, and the effects of RFRP-3-8 injections on pulsatile LH secretion in castrated male calves. The suppressive effect of RFRP-3-8 on LH secretion from AP cells was observed in the presence of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), but not in the absence of GnRH in culture media. In another experiment collecting blood samples serially from castrated male calves with repeated intravenous injections of RFRP-3-8 (n = 6) or saline (n = 6), the RFRP-3-8 group showed suppressed LH pulse frequency during the injection period (P < 0.05); however, the RFRP-3-8 group showed no difference from the saline group in all measures of LH secretion in the postinjection period. In conclusion, our results suggested that RFRP-3-8 suppresses LH secretion from cultured AP cells, as well as LH pulse frequency in cattle.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   Variations in trawl dimension, bottom contact, and catch with differing warp lengths during walleye pollock surveys conducted by the Fisheries Research Agency were examined. The ratio of warp length to fishing depth (scope ratio) was set at 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5 at depths of 110 m. At a 2.5 scope ratio, the net mouth shape and footgear contact fluctuated, as the trawl door did not contact the bottom. Footgear contact was complete when the scope ratio was 3.0 or more. Walleye pollock, sculpins and flatfishes were the main catch in all tows, and the catch increased with scope ratio. There was no difference in the length frequency of walleye pollock ( n  = 300) captured at 2.5 and 3.0 scope ratio. However, the length frequency at 3.5 was significantly different from that of other scope ratios. These results suggest that at a scope ratio of 3.0 or more, the trawl door will not leave the bottom at any depths. To compliment echo surveys for walleye pollock, a 3.0 scope ratio would be optimal, since the catch data for a 3.5 scope ratio was dissimilar from that of scope ratios.  相似文献
