Serpentinitic soils contain high concentrations of geogenic Ni. During serpentinitic mineral weathering, the Ni released from soils into ecosystems could be a source of non-anthropogenic metal contamination. In this study, soil samples were collected from two pedons in paddy fields in Taiwan and Japan; these samples were used to explore the profile distribution of total and labile Ni, demonstrating the contribution of Ni-bearing Fe and Mn oxides to the Ni partition in these soils. Serpentine and chlorite were the dominant primary minerals; thus, the soils reflected serpentinitic characteristics and exhibited high background concentrations of Ni. The total Ni content ranged from 240 to 520 mg kg?1. Repeated redox and leaching cycles caused the redistribution of Ni in the paddy soils. The diethylenetriamine pentaacetate (DTPA)-extractable Ni, an availability index of Ni, increased as the soil depth decreased in the two pedons. An additional pool of labile Ni was present in the soils because the Ni concentration determined using a 0.1 N HCl extraction was much higher than was that determined using the DTPA extraction. Fe and Mn oxides were closely related to the labile Ni in these paddy soils. However, Ni was predominantly retained by amorphous and crystalline Fe oxides rather than Mn oxides. Shortening the flooded duration of paddy field is required to reduce the solubility of Ni because that the labile Ni and redox-sensitive Fe oxides can affect both the paddy soils and environment when Ni is released into the soil solution and becomes bioavailable under reducing conditions.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to examine the LH response to exogenous estradiol in 4 heifers with ACTH-induced ovarian follicular cysts. During the control experiment, administration of estradiol 24 hr after PGF2alpha in luteal phase heifers resulted in a LH response in all 4 heifers. The LH response was obtained between 16-20 hr after estradiol administration. The peak LH concentration (Mean +/- SEM; 5.1 +/- 0.8 ng/ml) during the control study was significantly different (P<0.05) from the concentration after cyst formation. None of the 4 heifers responded to estradiol after ovarian cyst formation. This result suggests that heifers with ACTH-induced ovarian follicular cysts may have a defective hypothalamio-pituitary response to exogenous estradiol similar to cows with spontaneous ovarian cysts.  相似文献

The effects of the dietary medicinal herbs Massa medicata, Crataegi fructus (Cf), Artemisia capillaries, Cnidium officinale and their mixture (HM), on growth and resistance against Vibrio anguillarum were examined using larval red sea bream, Pagrus major. The methanol extracts of Cf and HM inhibited the proliferation of seven infectious bacterial strains including the genera Aeromonas, Edwasiella, Photobavterium, Pseudomonas and Vibrio. Rotifers enriched with emulsified bonito oil containing extracts of Cf and HM lowered the bacterial counts in their body on TCBS medium for the genus Vibrio in comparison with rotifers enriched by emulsified bonito oil alone. Although statistically not significant, larvae fed rotifer fortified with Cf from 3 to 20 days after hatching showed the best growth and final body weight followed by those given rotifer with HM and control enrichment. However, final body length of larvae fed rotifer with Cf was significantly larger than larvae fed on rotifers enriched with other herb extracts. After a challenge test with V. anguillarum, survival of larvae fed rotifer with Cf and HM was significantly higher than for the control treatment. These results revealed that Cf and HM in rotifer is useful to promote growth and resistance against V. anguillarum in red sea bream larvae, providing a new technology for mass production of disease‐resistant fry and fingerlings.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   A histological examination was made of the ontogenetic development of the digestive and immune systems of the larval and juvenile kelp grouper Epinephelus bruneus reared in the laboratory. The liver, gall bladder, pancreas and the demarcating region between the intestines and rectum were formed within 3 days post-hatch (dph). During the preflexion phase (within 16 dph), revolution of the intestine concluded, and pharyngeal teeth and the mucous cells of the esophagus were differentiated. In the transitional period to the juvenile stage (25 dph), the blind sac of the stomach, gastric glands and pyloric caeca began to form. From the viewpoint of the differentiation phase of the adult-type digestive system, the kelp grouper is similar to Heterosomata, hitherto reported. The primordial thymus, kidney and spleen were present at 12, 1 and 6 dph, and the small lymphocytes in these lymphoid organs appeared at 21, 30 and 33 dph, respectively. The developmental sequence of the lymphoid organs and the appearance ages of the lymphoid organs and small lymphocytes in the lymphoid organs in the kelp grouper are similar to those of other marine fish previously reported, except for the Pacific bluefin tuna Thunnus orientalis .  相似文献

Do secondary sexual traits, such as large dorsal hump and hooked snout, decrease the swimming efficiency of male pink salmon during freshwater migration? This is the first study to address the effects of secondary sexual traits in pink salmon on oxygen uptake and swimming capacity. We conducted a laboratory experiment using a swimming respirometer and a field study using electromyogram (EMG) telemetry in the Shibetsu River, Hokkaido, Japan. We compared the relationship between MO2 (mg O2·kg?1·h?1) and swimming velocity U (m·s?1) in male and female fish, and also investigated the effects of morphological traits (secondary sexual characters) on the relationship between MO2 (mg O2·kg?1·h?1) and swimming velocity U (m·s?1). Additionally, we compared energy costs and swimming behaviour during upstream migration between male and female pink salmon. The laboratory experiment revealed that MO2 exponentially increased with increasing U; this increase was described by MO2 = 167.9e1.23U for males and 144.9e1.14U for females. Linear mixed models found that hump height and the upper jaw length in males significantly and positively affected the relationship between MO2 and U; no effect was found in females. The field study found that swimming velocity for both sexes estimated from EMG calibration was lower than optimal swimming velocity (Uopt) calculated from the laboratory experiment. We suggest that pink salmon in the Shibetsu River do not swim at the optimal swimming velocity because of the short migration distance involved (20 km).  相似文献

Serial sera from four mongrel cats experimentally inoculated with infectious larvae of Dirofilaria immitis were analyzed by immunoblot patterns against a phosphate buffered saline-extract of D. immitis. Antigen-specific protein bands detected indicate that the low molecular weight bands of 36, 32, 22, 19 and 14 kDa, are predictable for positive adult worm infection, suggesting diagnostic usefulness for adult D. immitis infection in cats.  相似文献

This study aimed to describe the changes in the thecal vasculature during ovarian follicular atresia in the swamp buffalo. Ovaries of Philippine swamp buffalo (Bubalus bubalis; SB), crossbred (SB x Murrah buffalo; CB) and Holstein-Friesian cow (Bos taurus; HF) were collected from slaughterhouses, fixed in 10% formalin in PBS and embedded in paraffin. Sections of healthy follicle and various follicular stages of atresia were stained with Bandeiraea simplicifolia-I lectin (BSL-I) to visualize the endothelial cells of blood vessels. In the theca interna, healthy follicles in SB had a significantly lower number of capillary vessels than other breeds and other atretic stages of follicle. From healthy to early atretic follicle, theca interna in all breeds showed a significant decrease in the area of capillary vessel. Capillary vessel area significantly increased (but was smaller than in healthy follicle) in the middle stage of atresia and declined again in the late atretic follicle (greater than in early atresia but smaller than in healthy follicle) in SB only. No significant change in the capillary vessel area of theca interna was noted in both CB and HF from early to late atretic follicles. There was no significant difference in the capillary vessel number and area of theca externa among the different breeds and atretic stages of follicle. These results suggest that there are dynamic changes occurring in the thecal vasculature of SB but not CB during follicular atresia which differs among cattle.  相似文献

To elucidate the cause of growth retardation, 14 cattle with renal tubular dysplasia (RTD) were investigated by determining serum growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 concentrations. Compared with 6 healthy cattle, the baseline, maximum, area under the curve and peak amplitude of serum GH concentrations were higher or tended to be higher. Serum IGF-1 concentrations were lower normal or lower in cattle with RTD than in healthy cattle. Serum IGF-1 concentrations correlated significantly with body weight and chest girth, but not with serum GH and creatinine concentrations. Growth retardation in RTD might be associated partially with GH resistance.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the distribution pattern of von Willebrand factor (vWF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in the healthy antral and atretic follicles of Philippine swamp buffaloes (SB) in comparison with Holstein-Friesian cows (HF). Paraffin sections of healthy follicles and atretic follicles at various stages were immunostained with vWF antibody and VEGF antibody. The density of vWF-positive capillary vessels in the theca interna significantly increased as atresia progressed in SB, whereas the density significantly decreased in late atretic follicles compared with advanced ones in HF. On the other hand, the area of vWF-positive capillary vessels in the theca interna significantly increased as atresia progressed in both SB and HF. Immunoreactions of VEGF in the granulosa cells (in all follicle types) were observed in both SB and HF. In the granulosa layer, a reduction in the VEGF immunoreaction was noted as follicles progressed from healthy to advanced atretic follicles in both animals. Granulosa cells (in both SB and HF) showed a higher immunopositive staining than theca cells. In the theca interna, VEGF immunostaining diminished as follicles progressed to the late atretic follicles in both animals. These results indicate that during atresia, changes of vWF expression are the opposite of VEGF expression in SB. Both vWF and VEGF are suggested to be associated with follicular atresia in SB.  相似文献

Endocrine patterns were compared in 2 strains of Japanese black cattle with growth retardation; MHO- and HSK-paternal strains (MHO and HSK cattle, respectively). MHO cattle (n=8) displayed lower serum concentrations of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), and cortisol (31.1+/-20.7 ng/ml, 73.9+/-51.9 ng/dl, and 2.9+/-2.9 microg/dl, 1.3+/-0.7 microg/dl, respectively) than those in both HSK cattle (n=5) (64.9+/-47.6 ng/ml, 97.8+/-40.7 ng/dl, 4.1+/-2.1 microg/dl and 1.8+/-1.1 microg/dl, respectively), and the controls (n=6) (314.7+/-197.2 ng/ml, 140.2+/-21.3 ng/dl, 5.8+/-1.7 microg/dl, and 3.0+/-1.4 microg/dl, respectively). The area under the concentration curve of growth hormone (GH-AUC 0-600 min) in MHO cattle (22210+/-18951 ng.min/ml) tended to be greater than those in HSK (7887+/-6340 ng.min/ml) and the controls (2811+/-1275 ng.min/ml). MHO cattle showed a high GH-AUC0-600 min in contrast to a low serum IGF-1 concentration, as well as lower serum T3, T4, and cortisol concentrations. HSK cattle exhibited the same secretory patterns, but much more moderately. Growth retardation in Japanese black cattle exhibits some variations based on pedigree.  相似文献
