In the absence of a corrosive environment, brittle materials such as silicon should be immune to cyclic fatigue. However, fatigue effects are well known in micrometer-sized polycrystalline silicon (polysilicon) samples tested in air. To investigate the origins of this phenomenon in polysilicon, we developed a fixed-grip fracture mechanics microspecimen but could find no evidence of static stress corrosion cracking. The environmental sensitivity of the fatigue resistance was also investigated under cyclic loading. For low-cycle fatigue, the behavior is independent of the ambient conditions, whether air or vacuum, but is strongly influenced by the ratio of compressive to tensile stresses experienced during each cycle. The fatigue damage most likely originates from contact stresses at processing-related surface asperities; subcritical crack growth then ensues during further cyclic loading. The lower far-field stresses involved in high-cycle fatigue induce reduced levels of fatigue damage. Under these conditions, a corrosive ambient such as laboratory air exacerbates the fatigue process. Without cyclic loading, polysilicon does not undergo stress corrosion cracking.  相似文献

Cats exposed to aerosols of feline Chlamydia psittaci developed a disease characterized principally by conjunctivitis. Signs of conjunctivitis appeared between postexposure days (PED) 5 and 10, were often unilateral initially, and persisted for 22 to 45 days. Fever followed the onset of conjunctivitis (PED 11 to 15) and persisted for 3 to 8 days. Signs of mild rhinitis (occasional sneezing and mild serous nasal discharge) occurred in some cats between PED 8 and 37. Neither signs of lower respiratory tract disease nor significant pulmonary lesions were produced by the feline pneumonitis agent. Small foci of pneumonia were detected microscopically in 3 of 6 cats examined between PED 7 and 14. Chlamydiae were identified between PED 7 and 14 in the cytoplasm of epithelial cells in stained conjunctival smears. Conjunctivitis persisted for at least 18 days after chlamydiae no longer were detectable in conjunctival smears. Low levels of chlamydial infectivity, however, still were present in conjunctiva and lung on PED 45.  相似文献

Three studies were undertaken to determine the effects of amount, timing and distribution of simulated rainfall on the developmental success of Haemonchus contortus. Faeces containing H. contortus eggs were deposited onto pasture plots under a rainfall-activated retractable roof which eliminated incident rainfall. In October (spring) 2004 and January (summer) 2005, the effects of amount (6, 12, 18 or 24 mm) and timing (1, 4, 8 or 15 days post-faecal deposition) of a single simulated rainfall event was investigated via manual application of water to plots. More H. contortus pre-infective larvae (L1 and L2) developed under the d 1 simulated rainfall treatment than later treatments. There was no effect of rainfall amount on development in either experiment, and negligible development to infective larvae (L3). In February (summer) 2006, the effects of amount (12, 24 or 32 mm) and distribution (single event or three smaller but equal split events over 32 h) of simulated rainfall events was investigated with water applied via sprinkler. In this experiment L3 were recovered from the herbage in one-third of the plots harvested, however recovery was low (0.08% of eggs deposited) and there were no treatment effects. Recovery of L1 and L2 from faeces increased with simulated rainfall amount at d 4, and more L1 and L2 were recovered from the split distribution treatment at d 4. The results indicate that moisture conditions soon after faecal deposition are key determinants of H. contortus development success, with significant penalties on development when simulated rainfall was applied 7 days or more post-deposition, and when the duration of simulated rainfall was short. High rates of evaporation during both summer experiments resulted in rapid drying of the micro-environment and this appears to have limited development to L3.  相似文献

In a simple randomised field trial conducted during 1985–86/ 1986–87, the effect of basal nitrogen (45 and 60 kg N/ha) and basal phosphorus (15 and 20 kg P/ha) applications together with the soaking of seeds in 0.025% aqueous pyridoxine hydrochloride solution for 4h and foliar applications of 15 kg N/ha and 5 kg P/ha in two installments at 70 and 90 days after sowing (DAS) was studied on the performance of mustard (Brassica juncea L.). Recommended basal applications of 90 kg N/ha and 30 kg P/ha (BN90P30) was used as the control. The parameters studied included leaf area index (LAI) at 60, 80, and 100 DAS, net assimilation rate at 60–80 and 80–100 day intervals, and pods/plant, seeds/pod, seed yield, oil content, and oil yield at harvest. In general, the pyridoxine treatment proved superior over water soaking. The higher basal fertilizer dose was effective and foliar application of N and P gave higher values as compared to the water foliar application alone. The combination of pyridoxine + BN60P20+ FN15FP5 significantly enhanced the performance of the crop and enhanced seed yield and oil yield by 15.8 and 13.5%, respectively, over the check BN90P30 treatment.  相似文献

This research was designed to determine if divergent selection for resistance to Haemonchus contortus had produced correlated changes in voluntary feed intake and diet selection. Voluntary feed intake, diet selection and production were determined in 54 Merino weaner rams from the CSIRO Haemonchus selection flock, increased resistance to Haemonchus (IRH), decreased resistance to Haemonchus (DRH) and random bred control (C) selection lines. Weaner rams were fed ad libitum either a high (9.2 MJ ME/kg DM, 90 g MP/kg DM) or moderate (6.3 MJ ME/kg DM, 30 g MP/kg DM) quality diet and given the choice between the two diets, when uninfected (NIL) or infected with H. contortus (INF). Symmetrical response to divergent selection for worm egg count (WEC) was not matched by a symmetrical change in feed intake and there was no difference in diet selection between selection lines. Feed intake, growth and wool production of DRH animals remained the same as that of IRH, yet DRH animals had five times greater WEC than IRH. This study begins to explain the mechanisms that allow resistant animals to effectively prevent establishment and/or development of H. contortus, by maintaining a greater immune response to infection through higher circulating eosinophils, plasma globulin and IgG(1) antibody titres. Susceptible animals have displayed resilience by improving feed conversion efficiency and increasing protein synthesis.  相似文献

Caloric restriction has been shown to increase longevity in organisms ranging from yeast to mammals. In some organisms, this has been associated with a decreased fat mass and alterations in insulin/insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) pathways. To further explore these associations with enhanced longevity, we studied mice with a fat-specific insulin receptor knockout (FIRKO). These animals have reduced fat mass and are protected against age-related obesity and its subsequent metabolic abnormalities, although their food intake is normal. Both male and female FIRKO mice were found to have an increase in mean life-span of approximately 134 days (18%), with parallel increases in median and maximum life-spans. Thus, a reduction of fat mass without caloric restriction can be associated with increased longevity in mice, possibly through effects on insulin signaling.  相似文献
