Background: Pituitary tumors in dogs can be adenomas, invasive adenomas, or adenocarcinomas. In people, invasive adenomas and pituitary adenocarcinomas carry a worse prognosis than adenomas.
Hypothesis/Objective: To identify differentiating features on cross-sectional imaging in dogs with pituitary adenomas, invasive adenomas, and adenocarcinomas.
Animals: Thirty-three dogs that had computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performed and a necropsy diagnosis of pituitary adenoma ( n = 20), invasive adenoma ( n = 11), or adenocarcinoma ( n = 2).
Methods: Medical records were retrospectively reviewed for signalment, history, and diagnosis. CT and MR images were reviewed for characteristics of pituitary tumors.
Results: Mean (± standard deviation) age for dogs with pituitary adenomas (10.6 ± 2.9 years) was greater than that of those with invasive adenomas (8.3 ± 2.7 years, P = .04). Eighteen out of 20 (90%) dogs with adenomas had contrast-enhancing masses. Thirteen out of 20 (65%) had homogeneous enhancement. Mean adenoma height was 1.2 ± 0.7 cm. Eight out of 20 (40%) adenomas were round and 8/20 (40%) compressed surrounding brain. Eleven out of 11 dogs (100%) with invasive adenomas had contrast-enhancing masses. Seven out of 11 (64%) masses were homogeneous. Mean invasive adenoma height was 1.8 ± 0.7 cm, which was significantly greater than adenomas ( P = .03). Mass shape varied from round to oval to irregular. Six out of 11 (55%) masses compressed surrounding brain. Clinical and imaging features were variable for 2 dogs with adenocarcinomas.
Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: Invasive adenoma should be suspected if a dog with a pituitary tumor is <7.7 years of age and has a mass >1.9 cm in vertical height. Adenocarcinomas are uncommon and metastatic lesions were not seen with imaging.  相似文献

We previously reported that Clostridium perfringens in vivo proliferation and alpha-toxin gene expression were highly correlated, both progressing in a parabolic curve pattern during the development of necrotic enteritis (NE). The present study investigated the response of dominant ileal bacteria in abundance to C. perfringens infection using PCR-based denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and quantitative PCR (QPCR) techniques. Chickens were fed antibiotic-medicated (bacitracin, 55 mg/kg) or non-medicated diets, and were challenged with C. perfringens through the diet at 18 days of age. Ileal digesta was collected daily before and after the challenge for 5 days. Bacterial profiles of PCR-DGGE from both bacitracin-treated and untreated chickens responding to clostridial infection were analyzed by the principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). Treatment-related differences in PCR-DGGE bacterial profiles on day 2 post-infection (PI) were detected. Subsequent QPCR assays identified changes in the abundance of lactobacilli, L. aviarius in particular. Changes in both populations correlated negatively with the population of C. perfringens in bacitracin-untreated group of chickens that displayed a high incidence of NE lesions. The results indicated that L. aviarius was suppressed by C. perfringens infection. This observation warrants further studies on the mechanisms underlying the ecological change and to assist in further development of novel probiotics to control NE disease.  相似文献

PURPOSE: To investigate the role of pigment dispersion and inflammation in the pathogenesis of goniodysgenesis-related glaucoma (GDRG). PROCEDURES: Cases of GDRG were selected when the duration of the disease was specified and there was not any confounding pathology. Cases were grouped into < or = 7-day (acute), and > 7-day (chronic) durations, based on the time required to effect end-stage retinal damage. Acute cases were further divided into < 4-day and 4-7-day groups to assess peracute changes. Slides were evaluated for four individual signs of pigment dispersion: segmental loss of posterior iris pigment epithelium, clumping of posterior iris pigment epithelium, pigmented cells in the trabecular meshwork or anterior chamber and preferential settling of pigmented cells in the ventral aspect of the iridocorneal angle. Slides were also evaluated for the presence of neutrophils and/or lymphoplasmacytic cells in the trabecular meshwork (TM). Differences between groups were analyzed statistically. RESULTS: Of 100 cases evaluated, 34 were < or = 7-days (acute) (14 < 4-day and 20 4-7-day) and 66 were > 7-days (chronic) in duration. Of all globes examined, 96% had at least one sign of pigment dispersion, with no significant difference between groups. Two or more signs of pigment dispersion were present in 76% of all globes. The 4-7-day group was significantly more likely than the < 4-day group to have at least two signs. The difference was not significant between < or = 7- and > 7-day groups. Neutrophils were present in the TM of 86% of < 4-day and 50% of 4-7-day cases. Cases in the < or = 7-day group were significantly more [corrected] likely than > 7-day cases to have neutrophils in the TM, with 65% and 17% [corrected] positive cases, respectively. Lymphoplasmacytic inflammation was present in 53% of all cases, with no significant difference between groups. Cases in the < or = 7-day group were significantly more likely than > 7-day cases to have both types of inflammation. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that both acute inflammation and pigment dispersion may be key factors in the pathogenesis of GDRG. Pigment dispersion is prevalent at all time points and increases during the first 7 days. The finding of iris pigment epithelial loss supports the theory that pupillary block associated with iris-lens touching may be important in the pathogenesis of GDRG.  相似文献

The metacarpal of the horse is severely loaded during vigorous exercise. Metacarpal specimens have a greater impact strength in young horses that have been exercised than in those that have only been walked. We did not find a corresponding difference in the radius of the same horses. We show that cranial (anterior) cortical bone from the radius, which is loaded in tension during locomotion, has a greater Young's modulus, and tensile and bending strength, than bone from the caudal (posterior) cortex, which is loaded in compression. Caudal bone is, however, stronger in compression. The differences can be explained by differences in the histological structure developed by the 2 cortices and are presumably adaptive. This work confirms the work of others. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the impact energy absorption of cranial bone is nearly twice as great as that of caudal bone. The caudal cortex has apparently paid a heavy price in its reduction in resistance to accidental impact loading for being stronger than the cranial cortex in compressive loading.  相似文献

Total serum immunoglobulin concentrations of apparently normal indigenous goats were estimated by a sodium sulphite precipitation test which utilized 3 concentrations of the salt (i.e. 14%, 16%, 18%). A total of 210 goat serum samples comprising five phenotypically different breeds were examined. Immunoglobulin precipitation was greatly influenced by the incubation temperature. Using different concentrations of the sodium sulphite salt solution, serum samples incubated at either 4°C or 38°C consistently gave clear and rapid precipitation reaction in all samples with immunoglobulin concentrations of over 15 mg/ml.

Tests carried out at normal tropical room temperature (28°–30°C) gave inconsistent results and only 52% gave clear precipitation. Neither breed nor sex had any statistically significant effect on either the precipitation rate or the immunoglobulin values (P < 0.05).

It was concluded that this test if performed at either 4°C or 38°C can be used under field conditions to evaluate immune status of neonatal goats in the tropics.  相似文献
