Economic incentives are emerging as useful preventive approaches to motivating farmers to adopt safer farming and managerial practices. The effectiveness of these programs and incentives will be enhanced by focusing resources on factors that play a critical role in contributing to farm accidents and the injury severity. A primary objective is to identify and assess the relative impact of factors that jointly influence the probability of work-related farm accidents relative to nonwork-related accidents and the severity of farm accidents. The model uses survey data on producer characteristics, farm organization, and work routines from the Georgia Healthy Farmers Project (GHFP). A probit model describing the factors that influence the probability of a work-related accident is estimated jointly with an ordered probit model for farm accident severity. The probit model indicates that older farmers and hired farm workers have higher probabilities of experiencing work-related accidents relative to nonwork-related events. Significant variables that influence the severity of farm accidents are more difficult to identify from the ordered probit models for both work-related and nonwork-related farm accidents.  相似文献

Synoptic meteorological conditions for precipitating systems over South Korea are characterized into several similar types using a clustering technique based on the K-mean principles with the daily mean 850 hPa grid pointed geopotential height in the spatial resolution of 5° × 5° data obtained from NCEP in the domain of 25° ~ 50°N and 110° ~ 140°E for five years from 1994 to 1998. The consecutive three-day gridded NCEP data with the precipitation event on the last day over South Korea are used for the cluster analysis. With the use of the precipitation chemistry monitored data at 8 sites in South Korea, wet depositions of SO4 2?, NO3 ? and NH4 + belonging to each cluster are examined to identify the deposition levels for each cluster. The result indicates that the present methodology is found to identify the deposition levels clearly and be used more practically in the field of acid rain study without heavy computational requirement.  相似文献

The contribution of each phytochemical to the total antioxidant capacity of apples was determined. Major phenolic phytochemicals of six apple cultivars were identified and quantified, and their contributions to total antioxidant activity of apples were determined using a 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical scavenging assay and expressed as vitamin C equivalent antioxidant capacity (VCEAC). Average concentrations of major phenolics and vitamin C in six apple cultivars were as follows (mg/100 g of fresh weight of apples): quercetin glycosides, 13.20; procyanidin B(2), 9.35; chlorogenic acid, 9.02; epicatechin, 8.65; phloretin glycosides, 5.59; vitamin C, 12.80. A highly linear relationship (r (2) > 0.97) was attained between concentrations and total antioxidant capacity of phenolics and vitamin C. Relative VCEAC values of these compounds were in the order quercetin (3.06) > epicatechin (2.67) > procyanidin B(2) (2.36) > phloretin (1.63) > vitamin C (1.00) > chlorogenic acid (0.97). Therefore, the estimated contribution of major phenolics and vitamin C to the total antioxidant capacity of 100 g of fresh apples is as follows: quercetin (40.39 VCEAC) > epicatechin (23.10) > procyanidin B(2) (22.07) > vitamin C (12.80) > phloretin (9.11) > chlorogenic acid (8.75). These results indicate that flavonoids such as quercetin, epicatechin, and procyanidin B(2) rather than vitamin C contribute significantly to the total antioxidant activity of apples.  相似文献

Fluorine was introduced into the 2-position of the side chain of abscisic acid (ABA) analogues by Wittig reaction of alpha-ionone derivatives with ethyl triethylphosphono-2-fluoroacetate. The effects of the fluorinated analogues were evaluated on inhibition of cress seed germination and inhibition of gibberellin-inducible alpha-amylase induction in embryoless barley half-seeds. (2E, 4E)-2-Fluoro-5-(1'-hydroxy-2',6', 6'-trimethyl-2'-cyclohexen-1'-yl)-3-methyl-2,4-pentadienoic acid (5b) showed potent inhibitory activity at the same level as ABA in the cress seed germination test, and 5b also inhibited gibberellin-inducible alpha-amylase induction at 4 x 10(-)(6), 3 times the concentration of ABA (1 x 10(-)(6)) for 50% inhibition of alpha-amylase production. 5b also showed dehydrin induction activity. These results indicate that fluorinated ABA analogues mimic ABA action and can be a lead for a plant growth regulator which regulates plant growth or protects plants from environmental stresses.  相似文献

A gene responsible for the chlorothalonil biotransformation was cloned from the chromosomal DNA of Ochrobactrum anthropi SH35B, capable of efficiently dissipating the chlorothalonil. The gene encoding glutathione S-transferase (GST) of O. anthropi SH35B was expressed in Escherichia coli, and the GST was subsequently purified by affinity chromatography. The fungicide chlorothalonil was rapidly transformed by the GST in the presence of glutathione. LC-MS analysis supported the formation of mono-, di-, and triglutathione conjugates of chlorothalonil by the GST. The monoglutathione conjugate was observed as an intermediate in the enzymatic reaction. The triglutathione conjugate has not been previously reported and seems to be the final metabolite in the biotransformation of chlorothalonil. The glutathione-dependent biotransformation of chlorothalonil catalyzed by the bacterial GST is reported.  相似文献

A fluorescence polarization immunoassay (FPIA) based on a monoclonal antibody for the detection of parathion-methyl (PM) was developed and optimized. Fluorescein-labeled PM derivatives (tracers) with different structures were synthesized and purified by thin-layer chromatography. The influence of immunogen and tracer structures on the assay characteristics was investigated. PM concentration determinable by the FPIA ranged from 25 to 10000 ppb. The detection limit was 15 ppb. Methanol extracts of vegetable, fruit, and soil samples were diluted 1/10 for the analysis. Recovery in spiked samples averaged between 85 and 110%. The method developed is characterized by high specificity and reproducibility (CV ranged from 1.5 to 9.1% for interassay and from 1.8 to 14.1% for intra-assay). The FPIA method can be applied to the screening of food and environmental samples for PM residues without complicated cleanup.  相似文献

To optimize the extraction of sorghum proteins, several variables were examined: sample-to-solvent ratio, detergent type and concentration, reducing agent type and concentration, extraction time, and buffer pH and concentration. Samples were quantified and characterized by RP-HPLC, FZCE, and nitrogen analysis. These studies revealed that pH, detergent type, reducing agent type, and sample-to-solvent ratio all had significant effects on the levels of protein extracted. Increasing SDS concentration (2%) and solvent-to-flour ratio (20:1) with multiple 5 min extracts reduced extraction time by 35-80% while still extracting the same levels of total protein relative to the control methodology. Reproducibility using the multiple extractions was found to be excellent with relative standard deviations of <2% for consecutive extractions.  相似文献

Peroxynitrite (ONOO(-)), formed from the reaction of superoxide (O(2)*(-)) and nitric oxide (*NO), is a cytotoxic species that can oxidize several cellular components such as proteins, lipids, and DNA. It has been implicated in diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, and atherosclerosis. Due to the lack of endogenous enzymes responsible for ONOO(-) inactivation, developing a specific ONOO(-) scavenger is of considerable importance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of marine natural products to scavenge ONOO(-) and to protect cells against ONOO(-). Methanolic extracts of 17 marine alga were tested for their ONOO(-) scavenging activity. Among them, Symphyocladia latiuscula showed the potent scavenging activity. CH(2)CH(2) fraction was partitioned with CH(2)CH(2) following n-hexanal extraction from the methanol extract of S. latiuscula. It was highly effective for ONOO(-) scavenging activity. Further analysis of the active fractionated extract identified 2,3,6-tribromo-4,5-dihydroxybenzyl methyl ether (TDB) as a potent ONOO(-) scavenger. The data demonstrated that TDB led to decreased ONOO(-)-mediated nitration of tyrosine through electron donation. TDB showed significant inhibition on nitration of bovine serum albumin and low-density lipoprotein by ONOO(-) in a dose-dependent manner. It also provided cytoprotection from cell damage induced by ONOO(-). TDB can be developed as an effective peroxynitrite scavenger for the prevention of the involved diseases.  相似文献

Recent evidence from nitrogen (N) saturation studies indicates that forest floors in moderately impacted forests are the primary sink for atmospheric N inputs. Some researchers have suggested that the sink capacity of organic horizons is dependent on the amount of available carbon (C), which can be used for microbial N assimilation. To test the hypothesis that C limitation in forest floors exposed to chronic N deposition leads to an enhanced N leaching, a field C input manipulation experiment is under way in a deciduous forest. Since September 1999 aboveground C input has been doubled (by doubling litter input or by amending glucose) or excluded in replicated plots. Here we report the short-term response of concentrations of dissolved inorganic N (DIN: NO3 ?-N and NH4 +-N) in forest floor percolate to the C input manipulation. In autumn following the C input manipulation, DIN concentrations in forest floor percolate decreased in all plots except the No Litter plots compared to the pre-treatment summer concentrations. In contrast, the concentrations of DIN in the No Litter plots remained high. A different seasonal pattern of DIN leaching among treatments, along with measurements of microbial biomass C and potential nitrification rates of forest floor samples, indicates that seasonal N dynamics in the forest floor are largely regulated by C availability changes assoicated with litterfall C input.  相似文献

Films containing soy protein and wheat gluten were exposed to simulated farmland soil mix over a period of 30 days and monitored for degradation. The simulated farmland soil mix (topsoil/sand/Sunshine compost/vermiculite, 59:6:25:10, wt %) was mixed and stored at ambient humidity (48-55%) and temperature (20-24 degrees C); the soil mix was constantly maintained at 15% moisture by weight. Research focused on evaluating the effectiveness of gluten and cysteine additions on biodegradable behavior in the simulated farmland soil conditions. The four types of films, soy protein (S:G 1:0); soy protein with cysteine addition (S:G 1:0 + CYS); soy protein-wheat gluten (S:G 4:1); and soy protein-wheat gluten with cysteine addition (S:G 4:1 + CYS), were prepared at pH 7. 0 for degradation studies. Soy protein-gluten film rapidly degraded with 50% weight loss in about 10 days and with up to 95% weight loss in 30 days. Tensile strength and elongation of all soy protein-gluten films significantly decreased in 3 days. However, cysteine addition delayed the degradation rate of soy protein-gluten films. Soy protein-wheat gluten film disintegrated after 20 days in the simulated farmland soil environment. These results suggest that wheat gluten and cysteine addition to soy protein-based films could delay degradation rates due to their high disulfide contents.  相似文献
