Polythene tubes are the most commonly used seedling containers and their adoption can be attributed to high water retention that enhances seedling establishment as well as the desire for low-cost readily-available containers by nursery operators. Polythene tubes have drawbacks, however, because they adversely affect seedling root growth and are an environmental hazard. This study was conducted in Meru, Eastern Kenya, to investigate whether small-scale tree nursery operators are likely to adopt biodegradable seedling containers (cellulose papers and banana sheaths). It was hypothesised that biodegradable containers are better for seedling growth and are more environmental friendly than the widely used polythene bags. The study assessed the frequency of watering and growth (height and basal diameter) of Calliandra calothyrsus seedlings produced in various biodegradable containers under three conditions with varying watering requirements, i.e. light tree shade, shade net and polythene chambers, the first being widely used by farmers. The performance of these seedlings was later monitored in the field. Seedlings produced in biodegradable containers required more frequent watering than those in polythene bags under light tree shade and shade nets but less frequent in polythene chambers. Seedlings produced in polythene tubes had higher growth rates in the nursery, but when transplanted to the field, they were overtaken by those grown in the biodegradable containers due to transplanting shock after the polythene containers were removed. Biodegradable seedling containers can therefore be adopted in areas where water is not very limiting, and evaporation rates could be reduced and water-use efficiency improved by raising seedlings in simple polythene structures. 相似文献

- Accurately mapping the extent and status of biogenic reefs formed by polychaete worms of the genus Sabellaria is of conservation importance given their protected status across Europe.
- Traditionally, side‐scan sonar (SSS) combined with ground‐truthing in the form of seabed photography and videography has been widely accepted as the most suitable approach for mapping these reefs in the subtidal zone. In highly turbid environments visibility at the seabed can be near zero, however, rendering optical‐based ground‐truthing redundant. Consequently, the true distribution and status of Sabellaria reefs in some shallow subtidal areas around the UK remains unclear despite their designation as Annex‐I features of several Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) under the Habitats Directive.
- Acoustic camera imagery (ACI) collected using acoustic cameras in two deployment configurations matched well with the backscatter signatures of seabed features in corresponding SSS data. The ACI was of suitable resolution for visualizing Sabellaria colony structures, allowing for their Annex‐I ‘reef’ defining attributes (extent, patchiness, and elevation) to be assessed. Colony formation ‘type’ was also distinguishable in the ACI, although confidence in differentiating between low‐lying Sabellaria formations and surrounding substrates was low, particularly when using a pole‐mounted configuration.
- This study provides a proof of concept for using acoustic cameras as tools for ground‐truthing SSS interpretation and assessing the status of Sabellaria bioconstructions in low‐visibility environments. Further development of this approach and incorporating it into statutory monitoring programmes could improve the management of the reef habitats in subtidal areas of the Severn Estuary and other highly turbid environments.

In salmonids, growth hormone (GH) effectively promotes adaptation of freshwater (FW) fish to seawater (SW), but it has been
unclear whether GH has osmoregulatory actions apart from those consequent to an increase in body size. Our objectives were
first, to examine the minimum time and dose required for GH to enhance SW adaptation; and second, to optimize the conditions
for the acute GH response in developing a convenient GH bioassay based on its plasma ion lowering effect. Trout showed markedly
improved SW survival when transferred from fresh water 6, 24, or 48h after a single chum salmon GH injection (0.25 μg/g).
Preadapting trout to 1/3 SW enhanced the plasma ion lowering effect of ovine GH (oGH) injected 48h before transfer of the
fish to 80% SW. Endogenous plasma GH levels were elevated in control trout switched from low salinities to 80% SW but were
depressed in oGH-injected fish after transfer. Under optimal test conditions (1/3 SW preadaptation, 48h pre-transfer injection,
and 100% SW final challenge), the reduction in plasma Na+, Ca++, and Mg++ levels of oGH-injected fish was dose-dependent. The oGH doses giving minimum and maximum responses were 50 and 200 ng/g,
respectively. In short, GH exerts acute osmoregulatory actions that promote SW adaptation in the absence of changes in body
size. Compared with growth GH bioassays, the osmoregulatory assay is superior in economy of time, animal costs, and hormone

The analgesic effect of cryotherapy in an induced lameness model was evaluated. Lameness was induced with solar pressure from a custom-made shoe in a 10-horse, cross-over study. The degree of lameness was recorded with a commercial non-invasive inertial sensor. The distal limbs were maintained in an ice and water slurry (cryotherapy) or at ambient temperature (control) for 1 hour. Lameness was assessed serially over the following hour. Lameness at each time point was compared to the baseline induced lameness, within and between groups. Lameness had improved significantly in all horses 5 minutes after treatment but remained improved 10 minutes after treatment for the cryotherapy group only. Fifteen minutes after treatment, lameness in the cryotherapy group was improved relative to the control. Cryotherapy produced moderate, transient analgesia. Additional research is required to determine if altering the method, duration, or temperature of cryotherapy, as well as the targeted pathology and anatomy, alters the analgesic effect. 相似文献

Year-2 channel catfish (average weight 765 g) were fed a commercial-type, all-plant diet containing supplemental phosphorus (0.40%) from one of various sources, or fungal phytase (1,000 and 3,000 units), in 1-m3 circular raceways for 21 d at a temperature of 28–30 C. Subsequently, net absorption of phosphorus from the diets was determined by the chromic oxide indicator method in which feces were collected from the rectum. Net absorption of the supplemental phosphorus was corrected for the absorbed residual phosphorus in the basal diet. Net absorption coefficients for monosodium phosphate, monoammonium phosphate, finely ground defluorinated rock phosphate and monocalcium phosphate were 88.6, 85.4, 81.7, and 81.2%, respectively, and were not significantly different. Net absorption coefficient for dicalcium phosphate was significantly lower, 74.8%, but was significantly higher than those for coarsely ground defluorinated rock phosphate and tricalcium phosphate, which were 55.1 and 54.8%, respectively. These data are in general agreement with relative bioavailability values based on growth response for channel catfish determined in other research, and should be appropriate for determining available phosphorus allowances in commercial feeds and establishing phosphorus budgets in aquaculture feeding operations. The net absorption of phosphorus from the all-plant basal diet was 31.2% and increased significantly to 55.1 and 62.5% with the addition of 1,000 and 3,000 units of fungal phytase, respectively. 相似文献

Understanding the cultural variation in public preference for marine species is a necessary pre-requisite if conservation objectives are to include societal preferences in addition to scientific considerations. We report the results of a contingent study undertaken at three case-study sites: Azores islands (Portugal), Gulf of Gdansk (Poland) and Isles of Scilly (UK). The study considered species richness of five specific marine taxa (mammals, birds, fish, invertebrates and algae) as proxies of marine biodiversity and the aim of analysis was to estimate from a multi-site perspective public’s willingness to pay (WTP) to avoid increased levels of species loss (reduction of species richness) for different marine taxa. Results, based on 1502 face-to-face interviews, showed that income, education and environmental awareness of the respondents were significant predictors of WTP for marine species conservation. Results also indicated that respondents in each of the European locations had different preferences for marine taxa. In the Azores, although mammals and fish were valued highly, small differences occurred in the WTP among different taxa. Respondents in the Isles of Scilly put a relatively low value on fish while algae and marine mammals were highly valued. In Gdansk, respondents defined a clear order of preference for marine mammals > fish > birds > invertebrates and algae. These findings suggested that cultural differences may be important drivers of valuation and undermines the commonly held premise that charismatic/likeable taxa consistently have a disproportionately strong influence on WTP for biodiversity conservation. - Freshwater biodiversity is declining at an unprecedented rate. Freshwater conservationists and environmental managers have enough evidence to demonstrate that action must not be delayed but have insufficient evidence to identify those actions that will be most effective in reversing the current trend.
- Here, the focus is on identifying essential research topics that, if addressed, will contribute directly to restoring freshwater biodiversity through supporting ‘bending the curve’ actions (i.e. those actions leading to the recovery of freshwater biodiversity, not simply deceleration of the current downward trend).
- The global freshwater research and management community was asked to identify unanswered research questions that could address knowledge gaps and barriers associated with ‘bending the curve’ actions. The resulting list was refined into six themes and 25 questions.
- Although context-dependent and potentially limited in global reach, six overarching themes were identified: (i) learning from successes and failures; (ii) improving current practices; (iii) balancing resource needs; (iv) rethinking built environments; (v) reforming policy and investments; and (vi) enabling transformative change.
- Bold, efficient, science-based actions are necessary to reverse biodiversity loss. We believe that conservation actions will be most effective when supported by sound evidence, and that research and action must complement one another. These questions are intended to guide global freshwater researchers and conservation practitioners, identify key projects and signal research needs to funders and governments. Our questions can act as springboards for multidisciplinary and multisectoral collaborations that will improve the management and restoration of freshwater biodiversity.

- Although it is sometimes difficult for researchers to ensure that their work is used by resource managers to make informed decisions, an example where this knowledge–action gap has been breached is in research published in Aquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems (AQC) – among other journals – that has assisted fisheries managers in identifying strategies for reducing freshwater turtle bycatch in commercial hoop net fisheries in Ontario, Canada.
- Research published in AQC has provided evidence towards a simple and effective method for preventing turtle bycatch mortality in hoop nets, which could be adopted by the fishers. Other research published in AQC evaluated the effect of bycatch mortality on the probability of persistence of turtle populations with population viability analyses, and outlined the need to minimize bycatch mortality to prevent local extirpation. Nine other papers have been published on freshwater turtle bycatch in Ontario, furthering our knowledge on this issue including seasonality and temperature effects on catches, other net modifications, post‐release effects and assisted recovery, and the perspectives of fishers.
- The research results were presented to local resource managers with further discussions involving industry and stakeholders to minimize turtle bycatch mortality. Over several years, researchers have provided information to resource managers; however, when an incident of high turtle mortality caught the public eye, the research was readily available and changes in regulations were quick to occur.
- Reasonably good communication among researchers, resource managers, industry, stakeholders, and the broader public allowed the rapid implementation of regulations to mitigate freshwater turtle bycatch mortality and bridged the knowledge–action gap between researchers and resource managers.
- Both articles published in AQC had practical conservation impacts and were influential in providing local resource managers with feasible solutions, and the impetus to change regulations. These impacts extended to other jurisdictions and their monitoring programmes, where methods to reduce turtle bycatch mortality were also implemented.
