Comparison of three methods of temperature measurement in hypothermic, euthermic, and hyperthermic dogs

OBJECTIVE: To assess the reliability and accuracy of a predictive rectal thermometer, an infrared auricular thermometer designed for veterinary use, and a subcutaneous temperature-sensing microchip for measurement of core body temperature over various temperature conditions in dogs. DESIGN: Prospective study. ANIMALS: 8 purpose-bred dogs. PROCEDURES: A minimum of 7 days prior to study commencement, a subcutaneous temperature-sensing microchip was implanted in 1 of 3 locations (interscapular, lateral aspect of shoulder, or sacral region) in each dog. For comparison with temperatures measured via rectal thermometer, infrared auricular thermometer, and microchip, core body temperature was measured via a thermistor-tipped pulmonary artery (TTPA) catheter. Hypothermia was induced during anesthesia at the time of TTPA catheter placement; on 3 occasions after placement of the catheter, hyperthermia was induced via administration of a low dose of endotoxin. Near-simultaneous duplicate temperature measurements were recorded from the TTPA catheter, the rectal thermometer, auricular thermometer, and subcutaneous microchips during hypothermia, euthermia, and hyperthermia. Reliability (variability) of temperature measurement for each device and agreement between each device measurement and core body temperature were assessed. RESULTS: Variability between duplicate near-simultaneous temperature measurements was greatest for the auricular thermometer and least for the TTPA catheter. Measurements obtained by use of the rectal thermometer were in closest agreement with core body temperature; for all other devices, temperature readings typically underestimated core body temperature. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Among the 3 methods of temperature measurement, rectal thermometry provided the most accurate estimation of core body temperature in dogs.     

Efficacy of bovine herpesvirus-1 inactivated vaccine against abortion and stillbirth in pregnant heifers

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of an inactivated bovine herpesvirus-1 (BHV-1) vaccine to protect against BHV-1 challenge-induced abortion and stillbirth. DESIGN: Prospective study. ANIMALS: 35 beef heifers. PROCEDURES: Before breeding, heifers were vaccinated with a commercially available BHV-1 inactivated vaccine SC or IM. The estrous cycle was then synchronized, and heifers were artificially inseminated 30 to 60 days after vaccination. Heifers (n = 21) were challenge inoculated IV at approximately 180 days of gestation with virulent BHV-1. Fourteen control heifers were not vaccinated. Clinical signs of BHV-1 infection were monitored for 10 days following challenge; serologic status and occurrence of abortion or stillbirth were evaluated until time of calving. RESULTS: 18 of 21 (85.7%) heifers that received vaccine were protected from abortion following challenge, whereas all 14 control heifers aborted. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results indicated that an inactivated BHV-1 vaccine can protect against abortion resulting from a substantial challenge infection, with efficacy similar to that of modified-live BHV-1 vaccines.     

Responses of dogs to dietary omega-3 fatty acids

Long-chain omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil and other marine sources appear to be capable of modifying inflammatory and immune responses in dogs. Information is provided on the capacity of dogs to metabolize omega-3 fatty acids and the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on skin and coat, inflammatory responses, and neurologic development in puppies.     

Seroprevalence of and agroecological risk factors for Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis and neospora caninum infection among adult beef cattle in cow-calf herds in Alberta, Canada

A province-wide cross-sectional seroprevalence and agroecological risk factor study of Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) and Neospora caninum (NC) infection among cattle in 100 cow-calf herds in Alberta was conducted. The seroprevalence of MAP in adult cattle was 1.5% across all herds. Using a widely accepted herd test cutpoint of 2 or more seropositive cows out of 30 animals tested, 7.9% of herds were estimated to be infected (95% confidence interval (CI): 2.3-23.4%). Seroprevalence of MAP differed by agroecological region; specifically, cattle and herds in areas with high soil pH (> 7.0), southern latitudes, and arid climates had a moderately reduced risk of infection (P < 0.10). Seroprevalence of NC infection was 9.7% among adult beef cattle province-wide--these levels also varied by agroecological region--with 91.0% of herds infected overall.     

Resynchronization of estrus in beef cattle: ovarian function, estrus and fertility following progestin treatment and treatments to synchronize ovarian follicular development and estrus

The objective was to optimize rebreeding of nonpregnant, previously inseminated beef cattle. In Experiment 1, 43 cows received a used intravaginal progesterone-releasing insert (IVPRI; Days 0-7) 12.3 d after ovulation and received concurrently no treatment, 100 microg gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH), 1 mg estradiol cypionate (ECP), or 150 mg progesterone. Emergence of a new ovarian follicular wave was most synchronous (P < 0.0001) in the GnRH group. In Experiment 2, 675 heifers were given GnRH or no treatment on Day 0, fed melengestrol acetate (MGA; 0.5 mg/head/d) from Days 0-5 (Day 0 = 13-14 d after timed insemination; TAI), given 0.5 mg ECP or nothing on Day 7, and reinseminated 6-12 h after onset of estrus. Estrus was more synchronous (P < 0.05) in heifers given GnRH versus no treatment on Day 0. In Experiment 3, 317 TAI heifers were resynchronized with either MGA or a used IVPRI with or without ECP on Day 7; estrus was more synchronous (P < 0.05) and pregnancy rates were higher (54.1% versus 39.2%, P < 0.05) in heifers given a used IVPRI than those fed MGA. For resynchronization of heifers, pregnancy rates were not significantly improved with GnRH treatment, but were higher with a used IVPRI than with MGA.     

Relatedness of cytotoxins from geographically diverse isolates of Moraxella bovis

To determine whether amino acid sequence variation exists in the Moraxella bovis (M. bovis) cytotoxin (MbxA) from geographically diverse M. bovis isolated in the United States, mbxA was amplified and sequenced. The MbxA deduced amino acid sequence from M. bovis originally isolated in California, Washington, North Carolina, and Georgia, as well as reference strains of M. bovis isolated at the National Animal Disease Laboratory, Ames, IA, USA, all encoded a nearly identical 927 amino acid protein. MbxA from two of the four California isolates (SFS 9a and SFS 100a) differed from all other isolates at two sites at which the polar amino acids glutamine (position 666) and asparagine (position 823) were replaced by ionized amino acids glutamic acid and aspartic acid, respectively. Rabbit antiserum to the expressed carboxy terminus (amino acids 590-927) of MbxA from M. bovis (Tifton I) neutralized the hemolytic activity of SFS 9a and SFS 100a. The M. bovis cytotoxin appears to be conserved amongst geographically diverse isolates of M. bovis from the USA. Antiserum against the carboxy terminus of MbxA common to the majority of isolates neutralized the hemolytic activity of two strains with a divergent MbxA deduced amino acid sequence. Vaccines against IBK that incorporate MbxA as antigen may offer protection against geographically diverse strains of M. bovis.     

Tibial plateau symmetry and the effect of osteophytosis on tibial plateau angle measurements

A novel technique was developed to estimate the caudal medial tibial plateau landmark in the face of osteophytosis to improve accuracy in tibial plateau angle measurements. Using this technique, tibial plateau angles were evaluated in 31 normal dogs before and 8 months after right cranial cruciate ligament transection. There was no significant difference in mean tibial plateau angle before or after induction of osteophytosis. Additionally, it was determined that 90% of dogs had a difference of =2 degrees between right and left tibial plateau angles, which was considered symmetrical.     

Effect of nutrition during calfhood and peripubertal period on serum metabolic hormones, gonadotropins and testosterone concentrations, and on sexual development in bulls

The objective of the present study was to characterize the effects of nutrition on circulating concentrations of metabolic hormones, gonadotropins, and testosterone during sexual development in bulls. Nutrition regulated the hypothalamus-pituitary-testes axis through effects on the GnRH pulse generator in the hypothalamus and through direct effects on the testes. Pituitary function (gonadotropin secretion after GnRH challenge) was not affected by nutrition. However, nutrition affected LH pulse frequency and basal LH concentration during the early gonadotropin rise (10-26 weeks of age). There were close temporal associations between changes in insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) concentrations and changes in LH pulse frequency, suggesting a role for IGF-I in regulating the early gonadotropin rise in bulls. The peripubertal increase in testosterone concentration was delayed in bulls with lesser serum IGF-I concentrations (low nutrition), suggesting a role for IGF-I in regulating Leydig cell function. Serum IGF-I concentrations accounted for 72 and 67% of the variation in scrotal circumference and paired-testes volume, respectively (at any given age), indicating that IGF-I may regulate testicular growth. Bulls with a more sustained elevated LH pulse frequency during the early gonadotropin rise (high nutrition) had greater testicular mass at 70 weeks of age relative to the control group (medium nutrition), despite no differences in metabolic hormone concentrations after 26 weeks of age. Therefore, gonadotropin-independent mechanism regulating testicular growth might be dependent on previous gonadotropin milieu.
