Ozone effects on Mediterranean forests were studied for 10 years in southern France. The aim of these studies was to understand the impact of the pollutant on foliar damage among Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis Mill) and Arolla pine (Pinus cembra L) populations. During the summers of 2001 and 2002, ozone concentrations were measured using UV absorption analysers (4) and passive samplers (29) at two forest monitoring sites: Site 1 in the Nice coastal area for Aleppo pine and Site 2 in the Mercantour mountains for Arolla pine, in the vicinity of tree observation sites. AOT 40 values were quite high (25–33 ppm.h), especially in the Mercantour mountains, for the 5 months of measurement. Foliar damage (defoliation and discoloration) and specific symptoms (chlorotic mottle) were observed on 8 Aleppo pine and 13 Arolla pine plots. For Arolla pines, there was a significant correlation between defoliation and chlorotic mottles. There was also a correlation between mean ozone concentrations measured by passive samplers and chlorotic mottles. These correlations were less significant for Aleppo pine. 相似文献

The primary antifungal action of polygodial comes in part from its ability to function as a nonionic surfactant, disrupting the lipid-protein interface of integral proteins and denaturing their conformation. As a result, the antifungal mechanism of this sesquiterpene dialdehyde is associated with the membrane functions or derangement of the membrane. For example, the glucose-induced medium acidification process of Saccharomyces cerevisiae was inhibited by polygodial, presumably caused by inhibition of the plasma membrane H(+)-ATPase. Chemical analyses were performed on 387 sequential precipitation samples, both rain and snow, collected at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Long Island, New York, on 96 different days during the period from October 1983 to June 1985. The collection time for each individual sample was typically 30 min. The chemical species determined and the volume-weighted average and maximum concentrations (in parentheses) in units of μM were: H202:7(120), H2CO:6(60), H+:51(500), N03 ?:30(350), S04 2?:25(270), NH4 +:18(250), Ca2+:3(48), Na+:32(400), and Cl?:37(380). A strong seasonal dependence was observed for H202 concentration, the maximum concentration in summer (120 μM) being 6 times greater than in winter. In addition, H202 concentration also exhibited a strong diurnal variation, with a maximum peaking in the afternoon and a minimum after midnight. These observations suggest that the production of H202 may be governed by photochemical activity. Nitrate concentration also displayed a strong diurnal variation, having a maximum around noon, but did not show a seasonal dependence. Synoptic meteorological conditions for precipitating systems over South Korea are characterized into several similar types using a clustering technique based on the K-mean principles with the daily mean 850 hPa grid pointed geopotential height in the spatial resolution of 5° × 5° data obtained from NCEP in the domain of 25° ~ 50°N and 110° ~ 140°E for five years from 1994 to 1998. The consecutive three-day gridded NCEP data with the precipitation event on the last day over South Korea are used for the cluster analysis. With the use of the precipitation chemistry monitored data at 8 sites in South Korea, wet depositions of SO4 2?, NO3 ? and NH4 + belonging to each cluster are examined to identify the deposition levels for each cluster. The result indicates that the present methodology is found to identify the deposition levels clearly and be used more practically in the field of acid rain study without heavy computational requirement. 相似文献

The contribution of each phytochemical to the total antioxidant capacity of apples was determined. Major phenolic phytochemicals of six apple cultivars were identified and quantified, and their contributions to total antioxidant activity of apples were determined using a 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical scavenging assay and expressed as vitamin C equivalent antioxidant capacity (VCEAC). Average concentrations of major phenolics and vitamin C in six apple cultivars were as follows (mg/100 g of fresh weight of apples): quercetin glycosides, 13.20; procyanidin B(2), 9.35; chlorogenic acid, 9.02; epicatechin, 8.65; phloretin glycosides, 5.59; vitamin C, 12.80. A highly linear relationship (r (2) > 0.97) was attained between concentrations and total antioxidant capacity of phenolics and vitamin C. Relative VCEAC values of these compounds were in the order quercetin (3.06) > epicatechin (2.67) > procyanidin B(2) (2.36) > phloretin (1.63) > vitamin C (1.00) > chlorogenic acid (0.97). Therefore, the estimated contribution of major phenolics and vitamin C to the total antioxidant capacity of 100 g of fresh apples is as follows: quercetin (40.39 VCEAC) > epicatechin (23.10) > procyanidin B(2) (22.07) > vitamin C (12.80) > phloretin (9.11) > chlorogenic acid (8.75). These results indicate that flavonoids such as quercetin, epicatechin, and procyanidin B(2) rather than vitamin C contribute significantly to the total antioxidant activity of apples. 相似文献

A study has been conducted on the transformation of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in simulated natural water conditions. It has been found that these forms are readily interconvertible under natural water conditions. The results of this study indicate that Cr(VI) is reduced by Fe(II), dissolved sulfides, and certain organic compounds with sulfhydryl groups, while Cr(III) is oxidized by a large excess of MnO2 and at a slow rate by Oz under conditions approximating those in natural waters. Based on the results of these studies, water quality standards for Cr should be based on total Cr rather than on Cr(VI), as has been frequently done in the past. 相似文献

We investigated the arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) colonization and spore density in cropped land, fallow land, and an undisturbed savanna ecosystem under hot and arid climatic conditions in a valley of southwest China. Plants surveyed in the three land‐use types showed heavy arbuscular mycorrhizal colonization, indicating a high mycorrhizal dependency of plants in this environment. One‐way analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that the colonization of different AM structures and the spore density varied greatly among plant species both within and between different land‐use types. The AM colonization and spore density were higher in undisturbed than in fallow or cropped land. No significant correlation between AM colonization and spore density was observed when land‐use types were either considered separately or together. Cluster analysis based on the similarity in AM status with respect to both colonization and spore density showed similarities between fallow land and the undisturbed savanna. The results indicate that continuous cropping reduces AM colonization and spore density. These parameters appear to nearly fully recover when the land has been left to fallow for 4 years. 相似文献

Lentil flour was extruded at die temperatures of 135, 160, and 175 degrees C. The soluble protein content in the extrudates decreased by 40.1% in the extracting buffer (1% sodium dodecyl sulfate in 50 mM sodium phosphate buffer, pH 6.9) as the extrusion die temperature was increased to 175 degrees C. The most insoluble proteins in the extrudates extruded at die temperatures of up to 175 degrees C could be resolubilized by using sonication. The total disulfide content and sulfhydryl content in the extrudates decreased. The SDS-PAGEs showed that the molecular weight distribution of proteins in the lentil flour changed little before and after extrusion as well as during reduction. The results from this study show that the extrusion temperature had less effect on the solubility and molecular weight of the lentil proteins, which contain a lower level of cysteine residues than wheat proteins. 相似文献
