Bean cooking broth or liquor is a food preparation that results from cooking beans under a number of circumstances. This preparation is the first bean-derived food provided by mothers to their children as young as two months of age. Because of this, bean cooking plays an important nutritional role that must be evaluated. The present study attempted to evaluate, through a number of experiments, the significance of cultivars, method of cooking — either under atmospheric or vapor pressure — cooking time, salt addition, soaking and grain size on bean broth content. This was established mainly by solid content, and also by protein, ash and tannin content in different experiments.The results indicated that cultivars, but mainly cooking and soaking time, cooking method, and seed size were all important factors in determining brean-broth composition, mainly of total solids. Protein and ash contents were less affected. Prolonged cooking of the bean-broth resulted in a decrease in polyphenolic content. The capacity of inhibition of the mammalian mitochondrial respiratory chain of brevioxime 5a, a natural insecticide compound isolated from Penicillium brevicompactum culture broth, and another 15 analogue compounds, other oximes 5b and 5c; two diastereomeric pyrrolidines 1c' and 1c' '; five pyrrolines 3c', 3c' ' (diastereomers between them), 3a, 3b, and 6; two oxazines 4c' and 4c' ' (also diastereomers between them); and four pyrrol derivatives 7-10, are analyzed in this paper. Compounds 3b, 3c', 3c' ', 4c', 4c' ', 5b, 5c, 6, and 10 were found to be inhibitors of the integrated electron transfer chain (NADH oxidase activity) in beef heart submitochondrial particles (SMP), establishing that all of them except compound 3b and 6 only affected to complex I of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. The most potent product was 5b, with an IC50 of 0.27 microM, similar to the IC50 values of other known complex I inhibitors. The diastereomeric pairs 1c'/1c' ', 3c'/3c' ', 4c'/4c' ', and 5c have not been previously described. Chemical characterization, on the basis of spectral data, is also shown. 相似文献

The potential benefit of integrating mangrove and shrimp farms to protect ponds against erosion, to enhance the productivity of supply water and also to treat pond effluents has been pointed out previously. Agrosoledad, a 286‐ha shrimp farm located on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, was constructed behind a 1‐km‐wide mangrove area. Farm effluents are partially recirculated through a 120‐ha mangrove wetland used as a biofilter. A 3‐month study compared the concentrations of suspended solids and inorganic nutrients in the supply canal, the pond drainage and the biofilter. Suspended solids increased in pond drainage compared with supply water, but they were drastically reduced in the biofilter. In contrast, dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations were not different in supply water and pond drainage, but they increased in the biofilter because of the presence of a large marine bird community. Additionally, a significant decrease in dissolved oxygen and pH was observed in the biofilter. The study demonstrated the efficiency of the system to eliminate suspended solids from the effluent. However, nutrient dynamics showed that the possible use of mangrove wetlands as biofilters for effluent treatment will be less predictable than expected. 相似文献

The effect of the replacement of fish protein hidrolizate and vitamin premix by freeze‐dried biomass of the marine microalga Isochrysis galbana in the feed for goldfish (Carassius auratus) larvae was tested. Larvae (3.4±0.7 mg) were fed with three experimental microparticulated diets that differ from each other in the percentage of replacement of fish protein hidrolizate (25% or 100%) or vitamin premix by I. galbana biomass. The control diet and the diet containing microalgae biomass as a substitute of 25% of fish protein hidrolizate (MP25) presented the highest survival, being almost 100%, with no significant differences between them. Survival in diets in which 100% of fish protein hidrolizate (MP100) or vitamin premix (MV) had been substituted by microalgal biomass was 78% and 66% respectively. Growth, measured as weight, was lower than with the control diet in all treatments in which microalgal biomass was included, with lowest results being obtained with the MP100 diet. Differences between treatments and control were lower when growth was measured as length. The harvesting and processing microalgae biomass is crucial to maintain the nutritive value and could be the cause for the obtained results. 相似文献

The cultivation of scallops Nodipecten nodosus is a promising activity emerging in Brazil. The purpose of this study was to characterize the immune system of N. nodosus and evaluate the modulation of some hemato-immunological parameters during the reproductive cycle, in association with an astaxanthin-enriched diet. It was hypothesized that a supplementation on astaxanthin could enhance scallop immune system and minimize stress of reproduction. Scallops were separated in different groups: juveniles (J), adults (A), sexually mature (M), and recently spawned (S) animals. The last two groups were fed standard (M and S) or astaxanthin-enriched (Ma and Sa) diets. Scallop hemolymph contained two hemocyte populations: hyaline (HH) and granular hemocytes (GH). Antimicrobial peptides, similar to mussel defensins and mytilins, were found by immunodetection within the GH granules, even though the scallop hemolymph did not exhibit significant antimicrobial activity against different bacteria, including marine vibrios. Scallop hemocytes were able to phagocytose zymosan and produce reactive oxygen intermediates (ROI–NBT reduction). The number of circulating hemocytes (Neubauer chamber) varied from 12 to 26.106 cells mL− 1, and the GH was always the predominant cell type (67–99%). The plasma of N. nodosus contained lectins, specific to galactose and sialoconjugates, and their agglutinating activity was partially calcium-dependent. A phenoloxidase (PO) activity (146–446 U min− 1 mg− 1) was observed in the scallop hemolymph. However, this activity was not induced by trypsin or components of microorganism surface, and was strongly enhanced by alkaline pH (≥ 8.5). The total protein concentration of the plasma varied from 240 to 660 μg mL− 1. In general terms, all examined hemato-immunological parameters (hemograms, superoxide anion production, PO activity, lectin titers and total protein concentration) had a similar profile during all the scallop reproductive cycle. Their levels increased significantly from juveniles to adults (except PO activity), and declined markedly (immune depletion) in the sexually mature scallops. After spawning, the animals had a tendency to recover the standard levels of their immune parameters. Apparently, the astaxanthin-enriched diet had no effect on the tested immune parameters except for a slight influence on the scallop immune-oxidative reactions (ROI production). The results obtained in this study suggested the occurrence of a general immune depletion in the sexually mature scallops, confirming that the reproductive stage is a critical period in scallop life. 相似文献

Effective ecosystem‐based management requires a comprehensive understanding of the functional links in the system. In many marine systems, forage species constitute a critical link between primary production and upper trophic level marine predators. As top predators, seabirds can be indicators of the forage species they consume and the ocean processes that influence these populations. We analyzed the diet and breeding success for the years 1994, 2003, 2005, and 2007–2012 of the Brandt's cormorant (Phalacrocorax penicillatus), a piscivorous diving seabird, breeding in central California, to evaluate the extent to which cormorant diet composition relates to prey availability, and how diet composition relates to breeding success and ocean conditions. Cormorant diet was primarily composed of young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax), YOY rockfish (Sebastes spp.), and several species of small flatfish (order Pleuronectiformes). YOY rockfish consumption was positively related to their abundance as measured in a late spring pelagic midwater trawl survey. Northern anchovy appeared to be the most important prey as its consumption was positively related to cormorant breeding success. More northern anchovy were consumed in years where warm‐water conditions prevailed in the fall season before cormorant breeding. Thus, warm ocean conditions in the fall appear to be an important contributing factor in producing a strong year‐class of northern anchovy in central California and consequently a strong‐year class of Brandt's cormorant on the Farallon Islands. 相似文献

In this work we address two aspects of eggplant flower biology potentially involved on the efficiency of anther culture: the
selection of the best floral stage to extract anthers for culture, and the effect of heterostyly in the identification of
suitable buds and anthers. For 12 different accessions, we determined morphological criteria (length ranges) to identify buds
and anthers enriched in vacuolate microspores and young bicellular pollen, the stages most responsive to embryogenesis induction.
While these microspore/pollen stages were the most responsive when isolated and cultured in liquid medium, we observed that
culture of anthers containing these stages is not the best choice. Instead, the highest response was found for younger anthers,
containing mostly young and mid microspores. We analyzed eggplant anther walls and found that their particular thickness may
be behind this apparent discrepancy, since they may delay the diffusion of inducing factors to the anther locule, reducing
their effect over inducible microspores. Thus, the culture of younger anthers would allow for younger microspores to grow
up to the inducible stages while factors are entering the locule. We also analyzed the embryogenic response of short and long-styled
buds present in Cristal, a heterostylic cultivar. Our results demonstrated that each floral morph produced buds and anthers
of different lengths, but equally useful for anther culture, since similar amounts of embryos were produced. The practical
application of these results may improve the efficiency of anther culture not only in these cultivars, but in others also
presenting thick anther walls and heterostyly. 相似文献
