Purpose

Soil compaction resulting from mechanisation of forest operations reduces air permeability and hydraulic conductivity of soil and can result in the development of hydromorphic and/or anoxic conditions. These hydromorphic conditions can affect physico-chemical properties of the soils. However, early detection of these effects on mineralogical portion of soils is methodologically difficult.

Materials and methods

To analyse the effects of soil compaction on iron minerals in loamy Luvisol, three compacted and three non-compacted soil profiles up to the depth of 50 cm were collected from an artificially deforested and compacted soils after 2 years of treatment. Soil was compacted with the help of 25 Mg wheeler’s load to increase the dry bulk density of soil from 1.21?±?0.05 to 1.45?±?0.1 g cm?3. Soil samples were analysed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and were treated by citrate bicarbonate (CB) and dithionite citrate bicarbonate (DCB) under controlled conditions. Major and minor elements (Fe, Al, Mg, Si and Mn) were analysed by ICP-AES in the CB and DCB extracts.

Results and discussion

It was found that X-ray diffraction is not an enough sensitive method to detect the quick mineralogical changes due to soil compaction. Results obtained from CB-DCB extractions showed that soil compaction resulted in larger CB and smaller DCB extractable elements as compared to non-compacted soil. Labile Fe was found 30 % of total Fe oxides in compacted soil against 10–14 % in non-compacted soils. Compaction thus resulted in Fe transfer from non-labile to labile oxides (s.l.). Results showed that soil compaction leads to the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+. The effects of hydromorphic conditions due to soil compaction were observed up to the depth of 35 cm in forest soil profile. Furthermore, a close association of Al with Fe oxides was observed in the soil samples, while Mn and Si were mainly released from other sources, Mg showing an intermediate behaviour.

Conclusions

Hydromorphic conditions owing to soil compaction affect the mobility and crystallisation process of iron mineral. CB-DCB selective extraction technique, in contrast to XRD technique, can be effectively used to examine the possible effects of soil compaction on iron minerals.

Over the last few years, in the literature on the incorporation of crop residues in agricultural fields to mitigate climate change, there has been a growing tendency to no longer distinguish between the storage and the sequestration of organic carbon in soils. Applying, apparently for the first time, a simple “back-of-the-envelope” calculation to available mineralization kinetics data, we show graphically that there are fundamental differences, both quantitatively and qualitatively, between the two concepts of storage and sequestration. To avoid confusion, they should therefore never be used interchangeably, especially when addressing farmers and policymakers. Several simplifying assumptions made in the calculations, and about which a considerable lack of understanding persists, mean that at this stage, the graphical visualization we obtained is likely to still be optimistic in terms of the already low (10%) efficacy of sequestering carbon in soils. Several research avenues are outlined to deepen our grasp of the processes involved.  相似文献

There is no data concerning the fatty acid and triacylglycerol composition of French virgin olive oil. Thus, these compositions were determined using 564 samples coming from four olive harvests (1998-1999 to 2000-2001). Among these 564 samples, 372 came from the four main French cultivars (Aglandau, Cailletier, Picholine, and Salonenque) and from both of the oldest French protected designations of origin: "Nyons" (cv. Tanche) and "Vallée des Baux". The fatty acid compositions took the different isomeric monounsaturated fatty acids (C16:1 and C18:1) into account. The eicosenoic acid is gondoic acid (20:1n-9) and was determined by dimethyl disulfide adduct using GC/MS. The use of propionitrile as a mobile phase for the HPLC analysis of the triacylglycerols led to better resolutions between triacylglycerols than those resolutions obtained with the mix of solvents recommended by the normalized method (acetone/acetonitrile). Of the samples, 88 had a 9-heptadecenoic acid level (17:1n-8) higher than 0.3% and 33 had a linolenic acid level higher than 0.9%, which are maximal values accepted by the International Olive Oil Council and the European Union. A linear discriminant analysis was carried out on 372 samples with the SAS system and particularly with STEPISC and CANDISC procedures. Variables (n = 37) representing the different fatty acids, the sum of saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids, squalene, and triacylglycerols were used, thus allowing us to classify samples into six groups defined with 100% of well classified samples. These results constitute an original data bank that can be used to identify the origin of virgin olive oils.  相似文献

Background, Aim and Scope   Most studies of sewage sludge disposal effects on plants have focused on high metal loadings. Less attention has been paid to plant responses to trace metal loadings below the recommended limit values. Materials and Methods: Here, a lysimetric experiment was conducted to assess the uptake, distribution and binding of trace metals by metal-induced, sulfhydryl-rich peptides (phytochelatins) in colza (Brassica napus, v. Jaguar) grown on a clayey, silty soil amended with a sewage sludge compost containing trace metal contents far below the recommended limit values established by French legislation. Chemical fractionation of unamended and sludge-amended soils was performed using a sequential extraction technique. Results: Copper concentrations in plant tissues were not affected by compost disposal. Its application at a single rate equivalent to 30 t/ha stimulated the growth of plants. Lead was not detectable in the plant material (< 1 mg g-1 dry wt.). Plants grown on the amended soil accumulated significantly more zinc than control plants. These phytochelatin complexes detected in leaves had a lower molecular weight than those extracted from roots. Those extracted from roots were composed of one type of phytochelatins (PCs) such as in leaves or a mixture of glutathione, PC2 and PC4. In comparison with control plants, sewage sludge compost application caused the synthesis of longer chain PCs in roots and in leaves. Furthermore, in comparison with control roots, glutathione and phytochelatin mixtures of higher molecular weight were detected in roots produced on the amended soil, whereas no significant increase in \total\ Cu and Zn content was observed in these organs after sludge application. Discussion: Compost application induces a significant increase in the proportion of the most labile forms of zinc and especially its pH 4.7 acid-soluble forms and, as a consequence, a higher accumulation of zinc in plants. Effects of copper are limited due to its strong affinity for humic substances and lead does not seem to be transported in any organ of plants. The presence of phytochelatins, even in plants grown on the unamended soil, proved the ability of colza to synthesize them in the presence of zinc and copper. Conclusions: These primary results seem to prove, on one hand, ability of colza (Brassica napus, v. Jaguar) to synthesize phytochelatins as well as in roots, in leaves and, on the other hand, the sensitivity of the PC induction as suggested by their identification in plants grown on the control soil. Synthesis of longer chain PCs in roots and in leaves, and formation of glutathione and phytochelatin mixtures in roots, are plant responses to sewage sludge compost application. Recommendations and Perspectives: Phytochelatin analysis is thus supposedly able to be one of the bioindicators that may be used as an ecotoxicological risk assessment of wastes. Due to its ability to synthesize phytochelatins, colza could be chosen as a plant test. Phytochelatin analysis could also be limited to roots (more sensitive than leaves). However, further experiments are needed. Quantitative analysis of phytochelatins had not been carried out due to insufficient amounts of pure phytochelatin standards, that had allow us to better study relationships between trace metal amounts to vegetal response.  相似文献

The potential of Fourier transform mid-infrared spectroscopy (FT-MIR) using an attenuated total reflectance (ATR) cell was evaluated for the authentication of 11 unifloral (acacia, alpine rose, chestnut, dandelion, heather, lime, rape, fir honeydew, metcalfa honeydew, oak honeydew) and polyfloral honey types (n = 411 samples) previously classified with traditional methods such as chemical, pollen, and sensory analysis. Chemometric evaluation of the spectra was carried out by applying principal component analysis and linear discriminant analysis, the error rates of the discriminant models being calculated by using Bayes' theorem. The error rates ranged from <0.1% (polyfloral and heather honeys as well as honeydew honeys from metcalfa, oak, and fir) to 8.3% (alpine rose honey) in both jackknife classification and validation, depending on the honey type considered. This study indicates that ATR-MIR spectroscopy is a valuable tool for the authentication of the botanical origin and quality control and may also be useful for the determination of the geographical origin of honey.  相似文献

To determine if direct Ca sprays could affect the distribution and binding of Ca in the leaves and the severity of leaf/bract distortion in two varieties of poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherimma Willd.), we applied either 100 mg.l‐1 or 400 mg.1‐1 of Ca either one time or weekly to leaves of distortion‐ susceptible ('V‐14 Glory') and nonsusceptible ('Annette Hegg Dark Red,’ AHDR) cultivars. Only weekly spraying with 400 mg.l‐1 Ca reduced distortion in V‐14 plants, compared to controls or AHDR plants. Both bound and unbound Ca concentrations were higher in AHDR leaves than in V‐14 leaves, but these differences were not correlated with distortion severity. EDX analysis demonstrated that distorted regions of V‐14 leaves and bracts had lower Ca concentrations than did undistorted regions or AHDR leaves; weekly spraying with 400 mg.l‐1 Ca produced relatively uniform leaf Ca distribution in V‐14 leaves. Localized Ca deficiencies appear to produce the bract/leaf distortion in ‘V‐14 Glory’ plants, and these deficiencies can be partially overcome by weekly Ca spray applications.  相似文献

The metabolism of cymoxanil [1-(2-cyano-2-methoxyiminoacetyl)-3-ethyl urea] by a very sensitive strain of Botrytis cinerea toward this fungicide was studied by using [2-(14)C]-cymoxanil. Labeled cymoxanil was added either in a culture of this strain or in its enzymatic extract. The main metabolites, detected in biological samples, were isolated and identified by mass and NMR spectrometry. Their identification allowed us to show that this strain quickly metabolized cymoxanil according to at least three enzymatic pathways: (i) cyclization leading, after hydrolysis, to ethyl parabanic acid, (ii) reduction giving demethoxylated cymoxanil, and (iii) hydrolysis and reduction followed by acetylation leading to N-acetylcyanoglycine. In a cell-free extract of the same strain, only the first and the second enzymatic reactions, quoted above, occurred. Biological tests showed that, among all the metabolites, only N-acetylcyanoglycine is fungitoxic toward this sensitive strain.  相似文献

Two genes of wheat low-molecular-weight glutenin subunits (LMW-GS), B16 and P73, were cloned and expressed in E. coli. They were homologous to proteins encoded respectively at Glu-B3 and Glu-D3 loci. The N-terminal and C-terminal halves of B16 (NB16 and B16C) and the two chimeras combining the halves of the two genes (B16-P73 and P73- B16) were also expressed. All these constructs were compared for their reactivity with IgE from 24 patients suffering from different forms of wheat allergies. The results confirmed that LMW-GSs bound IgE in all adult allergies tested. Strong differences in reactivity between all the constructs were observed. They were disease-dependent. In wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (WDEIA), the reactivity of the constructs depended partly on common epitopes with omega-5 gliadins but also on differences in molecule conformation. The presence of NB16 in the constructs greatly influenced their IgE reactivity.  相似文献

The aim of this work is to assess the influence of light intensity (plants with direct sun exposure and in a controlled light intensity) and age of leaves (6-24 months) on the characteristics of the extracts of mate tea leaves obtained from carbon dioxide at high pressures. Samples of mate were collected in an experiment conducted under agronomic control at Industria e Comercio de Erva-Mate Bar?o LTDA, Brazil. The content of selected organic compounds of the extracts was evaluated by gas chromatography together with mass spectrometry. Quantitative analysis of caffeine, theobromine, phytol, vitamin E, squalene, and stigmasterol was performed, and the results showed that field variables exert a strong influence on the liquid yield and on the chemical distribution of the extracts.  相似文献
