To determine if direct Ca sprays could affect the distribution and binding of Ca in the leaves and the severity of leaf/bract distortion in two varieties of poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherimma Willd.), we applied either 100 mg.l‐1 or 400 mg.1‐1 of Ca either one time or weekly to leaves of distortion‐ susceptible ('V‐14 Glory') and nonsusceptible ('Annette Hegg Dark Red,’ AHDR) cultivars. Only weekly spraying with 400 mg.l‐1 Ca reduced distortion in V‐14 plants, compared to controls or AHDR plants. Both bound and unbound Ca concentrations were higher in AHDR leaves than in V‐14 leaves, but these differences were not correlated with distortion severity. EDX analysis demonstrated that distorted regions of V‐14 leaves and bracts had lower Ca concentrations than did undistorted regions or AHDR leaves; weekly spraying with 400 mg.l‐1 Ca produced relatively uniform leaf Ca distribution in V‐14 leaves. Localized Ca deficiencies appear to produce the bract/leaf distortion in ‘V‐14 Glory’ plants, and these deficiencies can be partially overcome by weekly Ca spray applications.  相似文献

The effects of the clear-cutting of a 70-year-old Douglas-fir plantation on the chemical composition of soil solutions and on leaching of nutrients in drainage waters were observed by a continuous monitoring, six years before and three years after the cutting. Forest harvesting was made with very limited soil disturbances. Results showed that the concentration of weakly fixed solutions did not change but that the concentration of gravitational solutions of the upper soil layers drastically fell down after the cutting. The limited increase in nutrients leached with drainage waters was only due to the increase in the water flux, which is difficult to quantify because of the presence of ground vegetation. The monitoring of numerous fluxes before and after the clear-cutting could explain the specific behaviour of the soil solutions. The limited losses of nutrients the after clear-cutting in a potentially responsive ecosystem were unexpected. The initial hypothesis was that the decrease in the mineralization and nitrification rates observed after the cutting was related to a stimulating effect of Douglas-fir on the activity of soil nitrifyers.  相似文献

Many studies have stressed the importance of trees to rural households. Few, however, have focused on actual numbers and densities of trees in different land-use systems. Based on community-level participatory research in six communities, semi-structured household interviews and full-farm fruit tree inventories, this study aims to understand farmers’ tree-planting strategies. Relationships between the diversity, number and density of fruit trees and farm size, land-use system, land tenure, distance from the homestead, proximity to the forest, market access and household characteristics are investigated. The key factors determining the differences in tree-growing strategies between communities appear to be market access, land use and access to forest resources. Within communities, differences between individual households were less easy to explain but tenure was important as was farm size. Smaller farms had higher fruit tree densities, a relationship that was particularly strong in communities with good market access. Overall there was a great deal of variability both within and between communities and many of the factors affecting tree-planting decisions were found to be highly inter-related. Despite this complexity, trees on farm play an important role in rural household's livelihoods. Therefore, expansion of tree cultivation should be recognized as a promising pathway to achieve increased income and food production by policy makers and extensionists alike. In addition to improved tree propagation and management techniques, farmers should be strengthened in the processing and marketing of agroforestry tree products and more emphasis should be placed on the development of tree enterprises. By doing so, farmers will be able to earn a more important and consistent income from fruit trees, contributing to the Millennium Development Goals.  相似文献

Clonal plantations of Eucalyptus have been introduced since 1978 on savanna soils of the coastal plains of Congo. Atmospheric deposition, canopy exchange and transfer through the soil were estimated on the whole rooting depth (6 m) over 3 years, in an experimental design installed in a native savanna and an adjacent 6-year-old Eucalyptus plantation. Complementary measurements after planting the experimental savanna made it possible to establish input–output budgets of nutrients for the whole Eucalyptus rotation and to compare them with the native savanna ecosystem.

In this highly-weathered soil, atmospheric deposits and symbiotic N fixation by a legume species balanced the nutrient budgets in savanna, despite large losses during annual burnings. After afforestation, weeding in the Eucalyptus stands eliminated the leguminous species responsible for a N input by symbiotic fixation of about 20 kg ha−1 year−1. Whereas the budgets of P, K, Ca and Mg were roughly balanced, the current silviculture led to a deficit of about 140 kg N ha−1 in the soil, throughout a 7-year rotation. This deficit was large relative to the pool of total N in the upper soil layer (0–50 cm), which was about 2 t ha−1. Therefore, the sustainability of Congolese plantations will require an increase in N fertilizer inputs over successive rotations to balance the N budget. These results were consistent with field trials of fertilization. Practical consequences of these budgets were identified, in order to: (i) direct field trials of fertilization, (ii) select appropriate methods of soil preparation, weed control and harvest, (iii) highlight the importance of fire prevention in this area, and (iv) support the implementation of field trials aiming at introducing a biological nitrogen fixing understorey in Eucalyptus stands.  相似文献

We compared N fluxes in a 150-year-old Fagus sylvatica coppice and five adjacent 25-year-old plantations of Fagus sylvatica, Picea abies, Quercus petraea, Pinus laricio and Pseudotsuga menziesii. We measured net N mineralization fluxes in the upper mineral horizon (A1, 0–5 cm) for 4 weeks and gross N mineralization fluxes for two days. Gross rates were measured during the 48-h period after addition of 15NH4 and 15NO3. Mineralization was measured by the 15NH4 dilution technique and gross nitrification by 15NO3 production from the addition of 15NH4, and by 15NO3 dilution. Net and gross N mineralization was lower in the soil of the old coppice, than in the plantations, both on a soil weight and organic nitrogen basis. Gross nitrification was also very low. Gross nitrification measured by NO3 dilution was slightly higher than measured by 15NO3 production from the addition of 15NH4. In the plantations, gross and net mineralization and nitrification from pool dilution were lowest in the spruce stand and highest in the beech and Corsican pine stands. We concluded that: (1) the low net mineralization in the soil of the old coppice was related to low gross rate of mineralization rather than to the concurrent effect of microbial immobilisation of mineral N; (2) the absence of nitrate in the old coppice was not related to the low rate of mineralization nor to the absence of nitrifyers, but most probably to the inhibition of nitrifyers in the moder humus; (3) substituting the old coppice by young stands favours nitrifyer communities; and (4) heterotrophic nitrifyers may bypass the ammonification step in these acid soils, but further research is needed to check this process and to characterize the microbial communities.  相似文献

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) has emerged during the past decade as a causative agent of autochthonous hepatitis and is a clinical concern in Western developed countries. It has been increasingly recognized that pigs are a major reservoir of HEV of genotypes 3 and 4 worldwide and pig‐derived food items represent a potential source of infections by these viruses in humans. Hepatitis E virus RNA testing was performed here on faeces from rectal swabs sampled in 2012 from 50 3‐month‐old farm pigs from the same farm located in south‐eastern France than in a previous work conducted in 2007. Pig HEV sequences corresponding to genomic fragments of ORF2 and ORF1 genes were obtained after RT‐PCR amplification with in‐house protocols. Hepatitis E virus genotype was determined by phylogenetic analysis. Prevalence was similar to that determined 5 years earlier (68% versus 62%). Two robust phylogenetic clusters of HEV subtypes 3a and 3f were identified, and these sequences obtained in 2012 largely differ compared with those obtained in 2007. Notably, HEV sequences obtained in 2012 from a majority (62%) of the infected pigs belonged to subtype 3a, which was not previously described in France, including not being found in any of humans, pigs or wild boars. Further studies are needed to assess the circulation of HEV‐3a in pigs and humans in this country. In addition, along with previous findings, this study supports the need for increased information to the public on the risk of HEV infection through contacts with pigs or consumption of pig‐derived products in France.  相似文献

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) can supply all of the iron that humans require for metabolism. Also, it fixes atmospheric nitrogen (N2) in symbiosis with rhizobia. In order to analyze the relation between phosphorus (P) and iron (Fe) elements in nodules and their roles for the plant N2-dependent growth, six common bean recombinant inbred lines (RIL) of the cross of BAT477 and DOR364 were inoculated with Rhizobium tropici CIAT 899 (originating from International Center of Tropical Agriculture, Colombia) and grown with sufficiency versus deficiency P supply in hydroaeroponic culture. Under P deficiency, the Fe content in nodules decreased in all studied genotypes and was significantly the highest for RIL 34. The nodule contents of Fe and P were significantly correlated under P deficiency. It is concluded that the regressions of nodule Fe content as a function of P content in nodules, roots and shoots, depend upon P supply and genotype.  相似文献
