In the Lower Mekong Basin, paddy fields often appear as mosaics, with soil mounds covered by trees or other plants in a spotty distribution. These soil mounds are commonly named termite ‘lenticular mounds’ because termite bioturbation is considered to be at their origin. Termite mounds host a large diversity of animals and plants, increasing landscape patchiness. Because the preservation of these islands of biodiversity is threatened by modern agricultural practices, the aim of this study was to quantify their abundance and the services they provide to the local population. The abundance of mounds and their use by the population were quantified in a catchment in Cambodia. We found that mounds density reached ~2 mounds ha−1. Interviews carried out within the catchment showed that most of the interviewees used mounds for increasing the fertility of their field and for the cultivation of rice and other plants (e.g. sponge gourd and pumpkin). In addition to their potential to increase plant productivity, the survey revealed that animals (rats and snakes), mushrooms and 13 plant species found on or in mounds were consumed by the population. In addition to potentially contributing to an increase in food diversity, mounds also impacted farmers' health by allowing access to 20 medicinal plant species and indirectly via a reduction in pesticide use. In conclusion, this study is the first attempt to quantify the large number of services provided by termite mounds in Cambodia. This increase in the knowledge of the diversity of environmental and socioeconomic services provided by termite mounds is likely to contribute to their preservation and provide a basis for the sustainable management of biodiversity in paddy fields in the Lower Mekong Basin region. 相似文献
Broodstock pacu Piaractus brachypomus as well as their eggs during their embryonic development were exposed to either normoxia (5.5–7.5 mg O2/L) or hypoxia (2.0–4.5 mg O2/L) conditions. The plasma concentrations of 11-ketotestosterone in males and estradiol-17β in females, as well as that of their precursor testosterone (T) were significantly ( P < 0.01) higher in fish maintained under normoxic conditions than in fish exposed to hypoxia. After ovulation and spermiation induced by hormonal treatments, the plasma concentrations of T and 17,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17,20βP) significantly ( P 0.05) increased in both sexes under both normoxic and hypoxic conditions. The plasma levels of T and 17,20βP achieved under normoxic conditions were higher than the ones recorded under hypoxia, except for those of 17,20βP in males. Males responded positively to the hormonal treatments, and the concentration of spermatozoa was 10.5 ± 0.8 109/mL under both oxygen conditions. Hypoxia resulted in significantly lower survival of embryos (17.3 ± 28%) in comparison to normoxic conditions (68.5 ± 25%). Moreover, larval deformities were found when exposed to hypoxia (91.6 ± 6%). During embryonic development of this species 4 mg/L of oxygen is tolerated at 26–27 C without negative impact. We conclude that despite the highly adaptable nature of adult pacu to environmental hypoxia, oxygen concentrations below 4 mg/L severely impacted survival of embryos. 相似文献
Spatial pattern of recruitment is an important factor influencing population dynamics of plant communities. The spatial pattern is determined by seed dispersal and by the spatial variability of germination and initial survival. In the process of forest expansion following farmland abandonment, mid- and late-successional species are often dispersed in pioneer forests by birds. This could result in an aggregated spatial pattern of seeds that could influence the dynamics of these species in mixed pioneer forests. In the sub-Mediterranean area, mid- and late-successional species such as Quercus pubescens (downy oak) and Fagus sylvatica (European beech) are expected to replace pioneer Pinus species. Using a point sampling method we demonstrated that beech and oak seedlings (height <2 m) have a clumped distribution in the understorey of pine. This could result from an aggregated dispersal by jays (dispersal effect) or from preferential recruitment in particular habitats (habitat effect). To test these hypotheses we proposed a statistical analysis of spatial patterns of regeneration of beech and oak. Ground cover variables (i.e. cover by rock outcrops, herbs, box shrubs, mosses or pine) did not differ significantly around seedlings as compared with random sample plots. Likewise, clumped seedlings had growth similar to isolated seedlings, thus refuting the hypothesis of preferential location in the most favourable microsites. Aggregated dispersal seems to be involved in the process of regeneration. Since beech and oak seedlings have contrasting ecological demands, we discuss the implication of this pattern for the replacement dynamics of pine by these species. 相似文献
The dynamics of nutrients were compared over three years in a clonal Eucalyptus plantation and in a native savanna in Congo. This paper focuses on the changes in the chemical composition of solutions during their transfer through the soil in both ecosystems. The main characteristics of the soil (Ferralic Arenosol) were similar in the two ecosystems, and the low inter-stand variability allowed reliable comparisons of the influence of afforestation on the soil solution chemistry.
Rainfall amounted to about 1400 mm per year during the experimental period. In both ecosystems, an enrichment was observed for most elements during the transfer of solutions through the foliage, but N uptake occurred. Concentrations of H+ and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in solutions increased through the litter layer in both stands. In the Eucalyptus ecosystem, a quick uptake of nutrients by a dense root mat inside the forest floor likely explained why the concentrations of gravitational waters were not enhanced markedly for ‘base cations’, despite the mineralization of high amounts of nutrients during the litter decay.
Soil solutions were collected by zero tension lysimeters (ZTL) at a depth of 15 cm, but these lysimeters were inefficient at collecting gravitational solutions beyond this depth. By contrast, tension lysimeters (TL) maintained at a suction of −60 kPa, collected soil solutions at the depths of 15, 50 cm, 1, 2, 3, 4 m in both ecosystems and 6 m in the plantation. In the topsoil of both stands, the nutrient concentration decreased sharply when the time of residence of solutions increased. This pattern highlighted the crucial role of the inputs by throughfall, stemflow and mineralization of the litter layer for the nutrition of these stands.
A combination of high nutrient requirements of the stands and low availability of exchangeable cations in this highly weathered soil might account for the extremely low nutrient concentrations in solutions collected by TL, regardless of the depth. 相似文献
High evaporative demand and limited precipitation restrict the yield of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grown in the Loess Plateau of China under semiarid climatic conditions. Grain yield can be improved by effective water management practices. A 13-year field experiment was conducted at the CERN Changwu Agro-ecological Experimental Station of the Loess Plateau to determine optimal irrigation strategies under limited water supply and to develop relationships among grain yield (Y), seasonal evapotranspiration (SET) and water-use efficiency (WUE). The experiment consisted of five irrigation treatments and three blocks. Measurements included grain yield, soil water content at various depth intervals in the 0–3,000 mm layer, irrigation amount, and precipitation. Results showed that winter wheat grown in this area experienced serious water stress during critical growth stages for the no-irrigation treatment. The amount and timing of irrigation had an important effect on grain yield, but significant differences in yield were not observed between the three-irrigation and the four-irrigation treatments. Grain yield was linearly related (R2=0.66) to SET, but differences in WUE were not significant for any of the treatments. The relationship between WUE and Y was best represented by a second order polynomial (R2=0.65) consisting of a nearly linear portion between 1.5 and 5.0 Mg ha–1. The irrigation schemes of the villages Gandé and Galladé in the Bakel Department in Senegal are managed by a farmer association and an agency. The agency had to install, repair and maintain motorpumps, assist in the lay-out of canals, structures and parcels, and to provide fuel and other inputs on credit. Associations had to manage the irrigation systems and repay the agency in time and in proportion to amounts of inputs received.The Gandé association and the agency came frequently into conflict, because the level of agency support was low, and the association did not repay in time. The Galladé association and the agency did not come into conflict, because the level of agency support was satisfactory, and the association repaid in time. Repayment depended on profitability of irrigation, which was lower in Gandé than in Galladé, because consumption of water and fuel were in Gandé two times higher than in Galladé. This was not so much caused by differences in water management, but because of differences in physical and technical characteristics of the irrigation systems. 相似文献
Summary The new European Common Agricultural Policy and environmental considerations are certainly to change agricultural practices toward low input cultivation systems. Nitrogen is one of the main inputs of winter wheat in northern France and it contributes highly to phreatic water pollution. A research programme has then been set up in order to study whether it is possible to breed for winter wheat cultivars using more efficiently N fertilisers. Less nitrogen would be applied, decreasing pollution risks and operational costs. It has been shown that a large variation exists for N related traits and for the resistance against N deficiency. On the one hand the cv Arche is very resistant to N deficiency, its yield on low N conditions (with no N fertiliser) is on average 89% of its yield on high N conditions (with a high N application). On the other hand, cv Récital is very susceptible to N deficiency as this same percentage is only 61%. A study on 10 hybrids showed that heterosis for grain yield was higher at low N level than at high N level. This was due to a higher number of grains per m2. 相似文献
In order to ensure the genetic diversity of the Olea europaea complex,it is necessary to characterize the cultivated varieties and the wildpopulations. In the present study, we focused on the olives growing on twoMediterranean islands, Corsica and Sardinia. On these two islands, there areolives with many denominations, as well as forests of oleasters. Here, it wasproposed to determine the relationships among cultivated and wild olives.Some Italian denominations were studied in addition to assess the influenceof the mainland on the two islands in this respect.The 59 RAPD markers obtained showed the existence of manysynonymous, and homonymous. A dendrogram was constructed using theUPGMA method and a FCA was carried out. The results of these twoanalyses showed the existence of a genetic divergence between the oleastersand the cultivated varieties. They suggest that some of the Corsicanvarieties were probably selected from local wild forms, contrary to theSardinian varieties.
