Previous studies on the effects of stocking density on the behaviour of African catfish have shown that at low densities, especially directly after restocking of tanks, increased aggression might occur. This aggression may directly affect the welfare of the fish. In addition, the resulting skin damage may also lead to the release of chemical alarm cues from the skin of the fish, possibly acting as a secondary stressor in a farming situation. Moreover, in a recirculation aquaculture system, a build-up of chemical alarm cues might occur. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of a single chemical alarm cue administration on the behaviour and growth performance of group-housed African catfish. Furthermore, the effects of a single passage over a biofilter on the behavioural response of African catfish to chemical alarm cues were tested. Although African catfish responded to chemical alarm cues with a short-term 35% increase in the number of active fish, no long-term effects were observed on both behaviour and growth performance of the fish. Furthermore, the results indicated that a single passage over a biofilter did not strongly alter the response of African catfish to the alarm cue, indicated by a 25% increase in the number of active fish. In conclusion, the results of this study indicate that chemical alarm cues, at the concentration applied in this study, cannot be considered a stressor for African catfish, although the effects of higher cue concentrations need further study. In addition, further study into the effects of chemical alarm cues on other, non-predatory, farmed fish is recommended.  相似文献

The technical and economic potentials of tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.), and giant river prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man), polyculture in periphyton-based systems are under investigation in an extensive research programme. This article is a combined analysis of data from four experiments exploring the effects of periphyton, fish, prawn and feed on water quality. Factor analysis and ancova models applied to the combined dataset allowed to identify the underlying ecological processes governing the system, and construct conceptual graphic models of the periphyton–environment relationships observed. With the first factor, variability in water quality was due to autotrophic (photosynthesis and nutrient uptake) and heterotrophic (respiration and decomposition) processes affecting water quality in opposite directions. With the second factor, variability was related to decomposition on the bottom and nutrient release into the water column, algae production and sedimentation. The analysis of the relationships between both factors and the growth rates of tilapia and prawn in the different systems allowed a better understanding of the functioning of tilapia–prawn ponds, and indicates that their joint culture is technically feasible and economically viable. Therefore, this technology is recommended for poverty alleviation and nutritional security in rural Bangladesh as well as in other countries of the region.  相似文献

This study tested the effect of two diets differing in carbohydrate to lipid (CHO:LIP) ratio (4.7 vs. 19.5 g/g) on the contribution of natural food and the total fish production in tilapia ponds. Eight ponds, each divided into three equally sized compartments, were assigned to one of the two diets, which differed in CHO:LIP ratio but had the same digestible protein to digestible energy (DP:DE) ratio (15.5 and 15.6 g/MJ). Ponds were fed equal amounts of crude protein. Three feeding levels (no, low and high) were nested in each pond in a split plot design. Average body weight of fish at stocking was 90 g, and the duration of the experiment was 42 days. Increasing the CHO:LIP ratio had no impact on tilapia production. However, the feeding level influenced both biomass gain, specific growth rate and survival. The apparent digestibility coefficient (ADC) for fat and carbohydrate was influenced by dietary CHO:LIP ratio but ADC for energy was unaffected. Proximate analysis of fish body composition showed no effect of diet except for levels of ash. Diet had no effect on the organic matter composition of the faeces, and the contribution of natural food to fish nitrogen gain. Therefore, we postulate that changing the dietary non‐protein energy source from lipid to carbohydrate does not have any impact on tilapia culture in semi‐intensive ponds.  相似文献

Elevated carbon dioxide concentrations reduce feed intake and growth in several fish species and induce stress responses. In this study, the effects of moderately elevated CO2 levels on performance, energy partitioning, swimming activity and stress response in European seabass were assessed. European seabass (140.0 g) were reared under two levels of CO2 (1.6 and 7.0 mg L?1) and two feeding levels (FLs) (maintenance and satiation) for 60 days, and fish swimming speed was recorded. At the end of the experiment, fish were subjected to an acute stress test. Blood cortisol, glucose and lactate were analysed. Energy and nitrogen balances were quantified based on measurements of body composition and digestibility coefficients. Moderately elevated chronic CO2 level did neither affect energy requirements for maintenance nor the utilization of digestible energy for growth. However, swimming activity data suggests that FL dependent alterations in energy partitioning took place. Blood cortisol values after the acute stress were affected by additional CO2 exposure and this effect was also dependent on FL. The elevated CO2 exposure of 7.0 mg L?1 appears to act as a chronic stressor as adaptive responses took place, however, this CO2 exposure seems to be still within the allostatic load of the fish.  相似文献

Dry matter (DMD), protein (PD), ash (AD), fat (FD), gross energy (ED) and phosphorus (PhD) digestibility coefficients were determined for five different iso‐N fish diets fed to Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). The control diet contained fishmeal (35%), corn (29%), wheat (20%), wheat bran (10%), fish oil (3%), diamol (2%) and premix (1%). Partial replacement of dry matter of fishmeal, corn grain, wheat grain, wheat bran and fish oil by 20% and 40% of dry matter of duckweed, in a dry and fresh form, was performed. Diets of treatments 1 and 2 included 20% and 40% of duckweed, respectively, in a dry form. In treatments 3 and 4, tilapia received formulated diets 4 and 5 in addition to 20% and 40% fresh duckweed providing the same amount of dry matter and protein as in control. The specific growth rates (SGRs) of tilapia were 1.51±0.07, 1.38±0.03, 1.31±0.06, 1.44±0.02 and 1.33±0.05, in control and treatments 1–4. There was no significant difference between SGR for the control diet and the diet with 20% fresh duckweed, while the other treatment groups had significantly lower SGR. All the treatment diets provide good values for feed conversion ratios (FCRs) and protein efficiency ratio (PER). Dry matter of diets ranged from 61.8% in treatment 4 to 85.2% in control. All the diets have high PD (88.4–93.9%) and high‐energy digestibility (78.1–90.7%). Dry matter of duckweed were 66.8, 63.3, 45.8 and 28.3 in treatments 1 to 4 respectively. Protein values were 78.4, 79.9, 77.6 and 75.9, while ED values were 59.8, 60.9, 64.5 and 58.4 in treatments 1 to 4 respectively. Analysis of body composition shows that tilapia fed diets with duckweed contain significantly (P<0.05) higher phosphorus and protein content and significantly (P<0.05) lower lipid content. In contrast, tilapia fed control diet had a significant higher (P<0.05) dry matter content and lower ash content.  相似文献

This review deals with the main mechanisms and parameters affecting design and performance of trickling filters in aquaculture. Relationships between nitrification rates and easily accessible process parameters, like bulk phase concentration of TAN, O2, organic matter (COD), nitrite, temperature, HCO3, pH and the hydraulic loading of the trickling filter, are discussed in relation to the design and operation of such filters. Trickling filter design procedures are presented and one of them, a model describing the nitrification performance of trickling filters by plug-flow characteristics, is discussed in greater detail. Finally, practical aspects in relation to filter design and operation are presented.  相似文献

The impact of two dietary organic acids (OAs) on nutrient digestibility and intestinal morphology was determined in Nile tilapia under conditions of dissolved oxygen in the water: normoxia and hypoxia. Four diets designated as control (0 g/kg organic acid salt), KDF (2 g/kg potassium diformate), CAB (2 g/kg calcium butyrate) and their combination (4 g/kg of a mixture of KDF and CAB, ration 1:1) were formulated with 520 g/kg of soybean meal in order to produce soybean meal enteritis‐like symptoms. The four diets were tested first under normoxic conditions (6 mg/L) for a period of 5 weeks, followed by a test period under hypoxic conditions (3 mg/L). The results showed that OAs were unable to significantly improve growth and nutrient digestibility under normoxic conditions but under hypoxic conditions, there was a significant enhancement of the growth and nutrient digestibility. Fish fed OA‐supplemented diets showed improvements in the intestinal morphology under the normoxic conditions, and these effects were more pronounced under the hypoxic conditions. Experimental findings suggest that OAs can improve the nutrient digestibility and intestinal morphology under hypoxic conditions. A synergistic effect by the combination of formic and butyric acid on growth, digestibility and intestinal morphology was not found.  相似文献
