Computed tomography (CT) is commonly used to assess animals with head trauma. However, strongly attenuating objects such as metallic gunshot cause artifacts that may make accurate localization of shrapnel pieces difficult. The purpose of this study was to develop an optimized CT protocol for minimizing metal artifacts in an animal model of gunshot head trauma. A cadaver head of a stranded Gray seal (Halichoerus grypus) was shot post‐mortem with a 0.223‐inch caliber rifle. The head was frozen, thawed, and scanned using a multislice CT scanner and protocols with varying acquisition and reconstruction parameters. Scans were acquired with and without use of the scanner's proprietary Extended CT Scale (ECTS) mode and beam hardening reduction (Posterior Fossa Optimization [PFO]) filter. Window/level display settings were also varied. For each protocol and each of five selected metallic shrapnel pieces, a single observer measured combined metal halo artifact and shrapnel area using a hand‐traced region of interest. The number of hypo‐ and hyper‐attenuating streak artifacts was also recorded. Measurements were repeated for three different reading sessions. Metal CT artifacts were minimized with a high‐frequency image reconstruction algorithm and a wide window setting. Further artifact reduction was achieved with a proprietary ECTS raw data reconstruction technique and a very wide window. This enabled a more confident evaluation of surrounding bone. On the other hand, these techniques are unfortunately not effective under conditions of soft tissue evaluation. Increasing tube voltage and use of a proprietary PFO filter did not yield a significant reduction in metal artifacts.  相似文献

Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) occurs mainly when humans ingest finfish contaminated with ciguatoxins (CTXs). The complexity and variability of such toxins have made it difficult to develop reliable methods to routinely monitor CFP with specificity and sensitivity. This review aims to describe the methodologies available for CTX detection, including those based on the toxicological, biochemical, chemical, and pharmaceutical properties of CTXs. Selecting any of these methodological approaches for routine monitoring of ciguatera may be dependent upon the applicability of the method. However, identifying a reference validation method for CTXs is a critical and urgent issue, and is dependent upon the availability of certified CTX standards and the coordinated action of laboratories. Reports of CFP cases in European hospitals have been described in several countries, and are mostly due to travel to CFP endemic areas. Additionally, the recent detection of the CTX-producing tropical genus Gambierdiscus in the eastern Atlantic Ocean of the northern hemisphere and in the Mediterranean Sea, as well as the confirmation of CFP in the Canary Islands and possibly in Madeira, constitute other reasons to study the onset of CFP in Europe [1]. The question of the possible contribution of climate change to the distribution of toxin-producing microalgae and ciguateric fish is raised. The impact of ciguatera onset on European Union (EU) policies will be discussed with respect to EU regulations on marine toxins in seafood. Critical analysis and availability of methodologies for CTX determination is required for a rapid response to suspected CFP cases and to conduct sound CFP risk analysis.  相似文献

The feasibility of substituting soybean meal for fishmeal diets for juvenile white shrimp Litopenaeus schmitti (0.35±0.01 g) was evaluated, and an adequate substitution level was determined. Five diets were evaluated using 46%, 59%, 75%, 88% and 100% substitution levels. Pellet water stability was significantly affected by dietary soybean content (P<0.05). Increased soybean content produced lower pellet stability, ranging from a dry matter loss of 14–22% after a 2‐h immersion, and 20–33% after an 8‐h immersion. After 52 days, significant differences (P<0.05) were found in shrimp weight, feed conversion ratio and protein efficiency ratio. The values were 0.64–1.06 g, 2.8–7.9 and 0.45–1.21, respectively, for the three measurements. Overall, better results were obtained with diets where soybean meal was substituted for fishmeal up to 75%. The 100% soybean meal diet resulted in poor growth performance of shrimp. Survival rates were acceptable for all treatments (90% or higher) and no significant differences were found in survival between treatments. Regression analysis using the broken‐line methodology indicated that 76.5±2% is an optimum soybean substitution level in diets that contained fishmeal and soybean as the major protein sources for grow‐out of juvenile white shrimp.  相似文献

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of low salinity on the water quality, microbial flocs composition and performance of Litopenaeus vannamei juveniles reared over 40 days in a zero‐water‐exchange super‐intensive system at 0, 2, 4 and 25 g L?1. At 0 g L?1, the mortality was total at the 26th day, and consequently, these salinity data were not included in the statistical analysis. Among the water quality parameters, only pH and the total suspended solids concentration were significantly influenced by salinity. However, a trend towards intensification of the nitrification processes was observed as the salinity increased, with the lowest ammonia and the highest nitrite and nitrate concentrations found at 25 g L?1. The concentrations of ciliates and flagellates diminished and increased, respectively, with the increase in salinity. Diatoms predominated at 25 g L?1, whereas at 2 and 4 g L?1, chlorophytes were more abundant. Microbial floc crude protein content was reduced with the increase in salinity, whereas ash content demonstrated the inverse trend. The best overall growth performance and survival were observed at 25 g L?1. However, satisfactory productivity was also found at 4 g L?1, suggesting the viability of rearing L. vannamei at low salinity under zero‐water‐exchange conditions.  相似文献

Since its introduction from Asia, the brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Stål), has become a pest of many agricultural crops in the USA. Insect predators utilize H. halys as prey; however, the chemical cues used by them in prey location are largely unknown. Here, we hypothesized that tridecane, an H. halys-associated volatile, acts as a kairomone for the predaceous minute pirate bug, Orius insidiosus (Say). We conducted laboratory, greenhouse, and field experiments to: (1) assess the attraction of adult O. insidiosus to H. halys-damaged bean pods and tridecane in cage studies, and its effect on egg predation; (2) video record the behavioral response of O. insidiosus males and females to tridecane in a four-arm olfactometer; and (3) test whether Orius spp. are attracted to tridecane-baited sticky traps in peach, blueberry, and sunflower fields, and its effect on egg predation. In the greenhouse, O. insidiosus was attracted to H. halys-damaged pods and artificial plants baited with tridecane in the presence of prey (sentinel eggs); however, this attraction rarely led to increased egg predation. Although both O. insidiosus males and females spent more time in the arm of the olfactometer with tridecane, males were more responsive at a lower concentration than females. Similarly, Orius spp. were more attracted to tridecane-baited than unbaited traps in the field; however, there was no effect on egg predation. Altogether, while O. insidiosus is attracted to tridecane, this attraction did not always lead to higher predation, suggesting that this kairomone likely acts as an arrestant.  相似文献

Endogenous polyamine concentrations in apical buds of peach (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch cv. 'Hakuho') and monterey pine (Pinus radiata D. Don) seedlings, saplings and mature trees were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography coupled with fluorescence detection to establish physiological correspondences and disparities between the species. Although there were many differences in polyamine metabolism between peach and monterey pine, several similarities were found. Specifically, in both species, the ratio between concentrations of free polyamines and low molecular-weight polyamine conjugates was greater than and less than unity in juvenile and adult plants, respectively. In animals, DNA methylation is related to gene silencing during ontogenic development. Little is known about DNA methylation in plants, although occasional changes in the DNA methylation state of specific gene promoters have been reported in angiosperms during some developmental processes. We found large differences in the extent of DNA methylation between meristematic areas of juvenile and mature Pinus radiata D. Don. trees, whereas differences in the extent of DNA methylation between differentiated tissues of juvenile and mature trees were small. In meristematic areas, there was a gradual decrease in extent of DNA methylation as the degree of reinvigoration increased. The observed changes in extent of DNA methylation during aging and reinvigoration indicate that reinvigoration could be a consequence of epigenetic modifications opposite in direction to those that occur during aging.  相似文献

The purpose of the present paper is to develop an easy and quick in vitro method to compare copper availability from breast milk and infant formulas. This study focuses on the differences caused by the use of pH 2.0 (adult gastric pH) or pH 5.0 (newborn gastric pH) in the first stage of the enzymolysis. pH affects Cu solubility, a possible estimator of the availability. Selection of a digestor, times of enzymolysis, centrifugation parameters, and Cu determination by ETAAS were discussed as well. Percentage of Cu solubility was larger from breast milk (gastric pH 2.0, 65.3 +/- 14.0 vs 40.0 +/- 13.9%; gastric pH 5.0, 61.2 +/- 16.5 vs 26.6 +/- 10.3%), but the soluble content was larger from infant formulas for both pHs (gastric pH 2.0, 245.3 +/- 82.1 vs 113.0 +/- 103.4 ng mL(-1); gastric pH 2.0, 169.3 +/- 76.9 vs 75.3 +/- 21.9 vs ng mL(-1)).  相似文献

Selective insect antifeedant and toxic action of ryanoid diterpenes.   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
In this work, we have studied the antifeedant and insecticidal effects of several natural ryanoid diterpenes. These compounds can be classified in two groups according to their chemical structures: ryanodol/isoryanodol-type (nonalkaloidal type) and ryanodine-type (alkaloidal type) ryanoids. The nonalkaloidal ryanoids were isolated from Persea indica (Lauraceae) while the alkaloidal ryanoids (ryanodines and spiganthines) were isolated from Spigelia anthelmia (Loganiaceae). The effects of these compounds on the feeding behavior and performance (with and without piperonyl butoxide pretreatment) of Spodoptera littoralis larvae and Leptinotarsa decemlineata adults indicate that some strongly deterred these insects, L. decemlineata being less sensitive than S. littoralis. Their antifeedant effects did not parallel their toxic action. Additionally, more than 60% of the nonalkaloidal ryanoids were antifeedants and/or toxic in contrast to 30% of active alkaloidal ones, supporting the hypothesis of a ryanodol-specific mode of action in insects.  相似文献
