There has been increasing interest in potential benefits to be gained by restoring damaged peatlands, with the majority of funding currently being driven by the recovery of protected habitats. However, few data are available linking vegetation community declines with peatland drainage, and so the potential for recovery remains difficult to predict. Surprisingly, there is a similar paucity of research demonstrating the extent of drainage impacts on grazing conditions for livestock, despite this being a priority amongst land managers. We attempt to address these two knowledge gaps, first by investigating whether ditches in blanket bog habitat have improved or increased grazing for sheep, and second by assessing the impact of ditches on the condition of vegetation communities. At an extensively drained upland blanket bog in Wales, currently undergoing ditch blocking restoration, we collected vegetation and sheep occurrence data across five catchments and over 2 years. We present evidence that drained areas had remained relatively wet and were less preferred by sheep. Furthermore, our results show that while sheep preferred graminoid-rich areas, drainage did not increase the abundance of this species group. Drainage at the site has, however, resulted in some degradation in blanket bog vegetation adjacent to ditches; although at the landscape scale, historic high grazing levels appear to explain much of the current poor ecological condition of the site. We conclude that drain-blocking restoration should not reduce sheep grazing conditions beyond their current relatively poor state, and thus in this respect may not represent a threat to hill farming productivity. 相似文献

The cosmopolitan whitefly species, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) and Trialeurodes taporariorum (Westwood) have always been regarded as pests to a large range of worldwide crops. Both species are capable of transmitting plant viruses, with T. vaporariorum being the vector of only a few ‘clostero’-like viruses and B. tabaci the vector of viruses in several groups. The largest group of viruses transmitted by B. tabaci are the geminiviruses and B. tabaci is known to transmit around 60 members. Until recently, B. tabaci had been associated with only a limited range of host plants within any one region, although its total potential host range was large. Virus transmission was confined within the plant host range of each regional population of B. tabaci. The emergence of the polyphagous ‘B’ biotype of B. tabaci with its increased host range of more than 600 plant species, has resulted in geminiviruses infecting previously unaffected crops. As the ‘B’ biotype spreads further into Europe, European field and glasshouse crops have been shown to be susceptible to whitefly-transmitted viruses already endemic to other parts of the world. More than 20 colonies of B. tabaci, including both ‘B’ and non-‘B’ biotypes from disparate global locations have been compared for their ability to transmit more than 20 geminiviruses. All but two highly host-specific colonies were capable of transmitting most geminiviruses tested. However, some viruses were transmitted more efficiently than others. The virus coat protein or capsid is essential for vector recognition and transmission. By comparing transmissible viruses at the molecular level to viruses that are no longer whitefly-transmissible, the active epitope on the virus coat protein could be identified for designing future virus control strategies. 相似文献

Two related iron chelates, one toxic to slugs by ingestion, the other not, were introduced into the foregut of D. reticulatum. The subsequent movement and redistribution of the metal within the slug tissues was studied by labelling the chelates with the radioactive isotope 55Fe. In slugs which survived treatment approximately half of the 55Fe was voided in faeces. The iron retained became unevenly distributed, the highest concentration occurring in the digestive gland, irrespective of the chelate used. At high doses, slugs treated with tris(1-oxo-1,2-diazabutan-2-oxido)Fe(III) were fatally poisoned while those treated with the homologue, tris(1-oxo-1,2-diazaoctan-2-oxido)Fe(III) were not. Slugs killed by the toxic chelate consistently contained proportionally less iron in the digestive gland and proportionally more in the body wall and reproductive system. Dosing slugs already killed by carbon dioxide asphyxiation gave a similar pattern, suggesting that the greater mobility of the iron from the toxic chelate was not a function of the slugs' metabolism. 相似文献

Two hand rasps (tungsten chip blade, solid carbide blade) and an electrically-driven solid carbide axial bur were used to treat the cheek teeth of 2 horses immediately postmortem. All teeth were normal and were rasped to a standard considered satisfactory in practice. Six teeth from each horse served as untreated controls. Following treatment, the teeth were extracted and the clinical crown removed and prepared for scanning electron microscopy. Teeth were also extracted and examined from a horse that had excessive dental treatment previously. Dental debris created by the procedures was collected and examined. All three rasp techniques resulted in amputation of odontoblast processes. The solid carbide blade cut deep gouges and grooves into the surface of the dentin, chipping the enamel and peripheral cement. No smear layer was created. Rasping with a tungsten chip blade created a partial smear layer and a smoother surface than the solid carbide blade. The electrically-driven bur produced a complete smear layer and removed all dental tissues to a smooth layer. The enamel had also been damaged by the electric bur. Crown particles collected after the procedures were larger following hand rasping compared with particles produced by the electric bur. The extent of damage to sensitive and vital dentin tissue was of concern. Further studies are required to establish the optimum technique for rasping equine cheek teeth. 相似文献

Cows from 2 California dairies were tested for paratuberculosis at the end of lactation by using fecal culture and a commercially available serum enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test kit. Individual cow characteristics and production variables were evaluated along with ELISA testing results as predictors of fecal culture status. In multivariable logistic regression analysis, age and a herd-standardized version of 305-day mature equivalent (305 ME) milk production were significant predictors of fecal culture status after adjusting for herd, quarter of the study year, and ELISA sample-to-positive (S/P) ratio. The area under a nonparametric receiver operating characteristic curve was significantly greater for a multivariable model that included age and the level of milk production when compared with a model without these covariates. In conclusion, consideration of cow-level covariates was useful as an aid in predicting Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis (MAP) fecal culture status. For a given ELISA S/P ratio, older cows and those with lower 305 ME milk production relative to other cows in the herd were significantly more likely to be shedding MAP in their feces at the end of lactation. 相似文献

Recent quantitative site-based monitoring and qualitative aerial and ground traverses provide contrasting assessments of the
health of much of the arid shrublands of Western Australia extensively grazed by livestock (‘rangelands’). Although these
results seem incompatible, we explain the apparent contradictions based on landscape succession processes operating at multiple
levels of ecological organisation. Specifically, we suggest that the intact areas in which site-based monitoring is conducted
are contracting as catchment canalisation and desiccation increase. However, the impacts of these processes have not yet become
manifest at the site scale. The site-based system addresses important regional questions. These relate to the large, relatively
intact areas away from most active surface flows, which should be a focus for resource conservation, given practical limits
to repairing widespread degradation with low management inputs. We provide a complementary set of questions to provide a more
comprehensive audit of rangeland dynamics in the context of underlying hierarchical landscape patterns and processes that
might threaten intact areas. We recognise the need to match questions and levels of ecological organisation and the implications
these have for sampling. We also recognise the difficulty in producing concise statements of change for clients when reporting
on complex ecological issues and processes. Without a clearly articulated, and well understood, hierarchical model of pattern
and process within which apparently contradictory findings can be reported meaningfully, policy makers may be confused by

The purpose of this study was to compare the sensitivity of modelled area burned to environmental factors across a range of
independently-developed landscape-fire-succession models. The sensitivity of area burned to variation in four factors, namely
terrain (flat, undulating and mountainous), fuel pattern (finely and coarsely clumped), climate (observed, warmer & wetter,
and warmer & drier) and weather (year-to-year variability) was determined for four existing landscape-fire-succession models
(EMBYR, FIRESCAPE, LANDSUM and SEM-LAND) and a new model implemented in the LAMOS modelling shell (LAMOS(DS)). Sensitivity
was measured as the variance in area burned explained by each of the four factors, and all of the interactions amongst them,
in a standard generalised linear modelling analysis. Modelled area burned was most sensitive to climate and variation in weather,
with four models sensitive to each of these factors and three models sensitive to their interaction. Models generally exhibited
a trend of increasing area burned from observed, through warmer and wetter, to warmer and drier climates with a 23-fold increase
in area burned, on average, from the observed to the warmer, drier climate. Area burned was sensitive to terrain for FIRESCAPE
and fuel pattern for EMBYR. These results demonstrate that the models are generally more sensitive to variation in climate
and weather as compared with terrain complexity and fuel pattern, although the sensitivity to these latter factors in a small
number of models demonstrates the importance of representing key processes. The models that represented fire ignition and
spread in a relatively complex fashion were more sensitive to changes in all four factors because they explicitly simulate
the processes that link these factors to area burned.
