Eucalyptus globulus sapwood and heartwood were delignified at 130°, 150°, or 170°C by kraft pulping. Pulp yields of heartwood were lower than
those of sapwood (46.5% vs. 50.4% at 170°C). Delignification was modeled using consecutive and simultaneous kinetic models.
The modeling was similar for heartwood and sapwood, and either approach could be used, with both yielding good correlations
between experimental and model data. The consecutive model identified two delignification phases with similar reaction rates
and activation energies for heartwood and sapwood at 150° and 170°C. At 130°C only one phase was identified. Three reactive
types of lignin fractions were identified using the simultaneous model, without differences between heartwood and sapwood.
Their reaction rates were 0.152, 0.138, and 0.003 min−1 at 170°C, and the activation energies were 132, 119, and 102 kJ.mol−1. The presence of heartwood did not influence the kinetic development of delignification. The negative impact of heartwood
in pulping is related to the higher content of extractives (9.8% vs. 3.9% in heartwood and sapwood) and to their influence
on the process, namely in the heating-totemperature phase when a substantial mass loss occurs (30% vs. 20% for heartwood and

In most temperate forest, nitrogen (N) is considered a limiting factor. This becomes important in extreme environments, as Nothofagus antarctica forests, where the antecedents are scarce. Thinning practices in N. antarctica forests for silvopastoral uses may modify the soil N dynamics. Therefore, the objective of this work was to evaluate the temporal variation of soil N in these ecosystems. The mineral extractable soil N, net nitrification and net N mineralization were evaluated under different crown cover and two site quality stands. The mineral N extractable (NH4 +–N + NO3 ?–N) was measured periodically. Net nitrification and net N mineralization were estimated through the technique of incubation of intact samples with tubes. The total mineral extractable N concentration varied between crown cover and dates, with no differences among site classes. The lowest and highest values were found in the minimal and intermediate crown cover, respectively. In the higher site quality stand, the annual net N mineralization was lower in the minimal crown cover reaching 11 kg N ha?1 year?1, and higher in the maximal crown cover (54 kg N ha?1 year?1). In the lower site quality stand there was no differences among crown cover. The same pattern was found for net nitrification. Thinning practices for silvopastoral use of these forests, keeping intermediate crown cover values, did not affect both N mineralization and nitrification. We investigated sex-related photosynthetic responses to drought in the dioecious species, Populus cathayana Rehd. Plants were subjected to two watering regimes (100% and 30% of field capacity) in a semi-controlled environment. Drought significantly decreased leaf area (LA), total number of leaves (TNL), specific leaf area (SLA), relative water content, net photosynthetic rate (P(n)), transpiration (E), stomatal conductance (g(s)), intercellular CO(2) concentration (C(i)), light saturation point (L(SP)), apparent quantum yield (Phi), carboxylation efficiency (CE), light-saturated photosynthetic rate (P(max)), maximum efficiency of PSII (F(v)/F(m)) and maximum effective quantum yield of PSII (Yield), and increased the total chlorophyll concentration (TC), CO(2) compensation point (Gamma), non-photochemical quenching coefficient, peroxidase (POD) activity and carbon isotope composition (delta(13)C). Moreover, differences between males and females were detected in many of these responses. In the drought treatment, males exhibited significantly higher LA, TNL, TC, concentration of carotenoids (Caro), P(n), E, g(s), C(i), L(SP), Phi, CE, P(max), F(v)/F(m), photochemical quenching coefficient, POD activity and delta(13)C, but a lower SLA, chlorophyll a/b ratio, carotenoids/total chlorophyll ratio and Gamma than females. However, Caro, L(SP), Gamma, Phi, CE and POD activity were apparently associated with sex-related resource demands, because significant differences in these traits were detected between the sexes under well-watered conditions. There is a limited knowledge on the inheritance of traits with agronomic relevance in cassava. A diallel study among 10 parental
clones was conducted in the acid-soils environment in the eastern savannas of Colombia. Thirty clones were obtained for each
F1 cross. Each clone was represented by six plants, which were distributed in three replications at two locations. Therefore,
the same 30 genotypes of each F1 cross were planted in the three replications at the two locations. Analysis of variance suggested
significant effects for five of the six variables analyzed (harvest index, dry matter content, height of first branching,
reaction to super elongation disease, and plant type scores). Fresh root yield showed strong genotype × environment interaction
and differences between crosses reached statistical significance in only one of the two environments analyzed. General and
specific combining ability effects and their interaction with the environment were significant for most of the variables as

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of chronic dietary supplementation of a grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) at a dose of 35 mg/kg body weight on energy metabolism and mitochondrial function in the skeletal muscle of Zucker obese rats. Three groups of 10 animals each were used: lean Fa/fa lean group (LG) rats, a control fa/fa obese group (OG) of rats, and an obese supplemented fa/fa proanthocyanidins obese group (POG) of rats, which were supplemented with a dose of 35 mg GSPE/kg of body weight/day during the 68 days of experimentation. Skeletal muscle energy metabolism was evaluated by determining enzyme activities, key metabolic gene expression, and immunoblotting of oxidative phosphorylation complexes. Mitochondrial function was analyzed by high-resolution respirometry using both a glycosidic and a lipid substrate. In muscle, chronic GSPE administration decreased citrate synthase activity, the amount of oxidative phosphorylation complexes I and II, and Nrf1 gene expression, without any effects on the mitochondrial oxidative capacity. This situation was associated with lower reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Additionally, GSPE administration enhanced the ability to oxidize pyruvate, and it also increased the activity of enzymes involved in oxidative phosphorylation including cytochrome c oxidase. There is strong evidence to suggest that GSPE administration stimulates mitochondrial function in skeletal muscle specifically by increasing the capacity to oxidize pyruvate and contributes to reduced muscle ROS generation in obese Zucker rats. 相似文献

In tropical lowlands, ecosystems with peat strata are commonly reported from Southeast Asia, but hardly at all from Amazonia. In this paper, we quantify the horizontal distribution of four important plant nutrients (Ca, Mg, K and P) in five peatland sites located in Peruvian Amazonia and the vertical distribution of these nutrients in one of the sites. With this data as well as topography measurements of the peat deposit from one of the sites, we showed that minerotrophic and ombrotrophic peatlands can be detected in Amazonian floodplains. The nutrient-poor ombrotrophic bogs receive nutrients only from atmospheric deposition because of their thick peat layer and convex topography, while the minerotrophic swamps are periodically covered by nutrient-rich floodwater and/or receive nutrient input from surface waters or from groundwater with capillary rise. The existence of such peatlands in the Amazonian lowlands increases the regional habitat diversity and availability of palaeoecological information and probably has implications also for the hydrological dynamics, water quality, and carbon dynamics of the area. 相似文献
