A critical component of many releasing projects is the identification and subsequent implementation of optimal release strategies
that can decrease post-release predation mortalities. We performed laboratory experiments to investigate whether acclimation
to shelters affects the post-release survival of hatchery-reared black-spot tuskfish Choerodon schoenleinii in the presence of a reef-resident predator, the white-streaked grouper Epinephelus ongus. Tuskfish were exposed to groupers under three different experimental conditions/treatments: (1) acclimation of fish to shelters
prior to their exposure to groupers; (2) no acclimation of fish to shelters, but with shelters available during their exposure
to groupers; (3) fish not acclimated to shelters and no shelters available during their exposure to groupers. Tuskfish that
were acclimated to shelters utilized shelters more frequently than did non-acclimated fish, and the survival rate of acclimated
fish was higher than those of fish in the other treatments. These results suggest that pre-release acclimation to shelters

The recruitment patterns of black-spot tuskfish Choerodon schoenleinii were compared with those of orange-dotted tuskfish (OT) C. ancholago. Individuals at the settlement and juvenile stages were collected using a push net in the intertidal zone and a seine net in seagrass beds. Relative values of standard length to total length (TL) for the two Choerodon species indicated an inflection point at approximately 10?C20?mm TL, suggesting that both species complete metamorphosis at a similar size. However, their temporal and spatial occurrence patterns were distinct. Newly settled individuals (postflexion stage) of black-spot tuskfish were collected mainly within foliage of Sargassum plants of the intertidal zone around March?CApril, while those of OT occurred in both the intertidal zone and seagrass beds mainly in May and June. In seagrass beds, the abundances of both species increased from May or June; however, the TL of black-spot tuskfish was bigger than that of OT. Therefore, black-spot tuskfish progressively migrate to seagrass beds after settling and completing metamorphosis in the intertidal zone, indicating that they utilize two different habitats as nursery grounds. Early spawning and migration from the intertidal zone by this species contributed to the occurrence of relatively large individuals in seagrass beds. 相似文献

Microstructures of lapilli were examined for reared larvae and juveniles of black-spot tuskfish Choerodon schoenleinii. Lapilli of larvae at 1 day after hatching have one diffuse and obscure ring with an otolith radius of 4.3 ± 0.50 μm (mean ± SD,
N = 8). The slope and intercept of the regression between the number of days after hatching and increment counts did not differ
significantly from one and zero, respectively, indicating that lapillus increments were formed on a daily basis after hatching.
There was an ontogenetic shift in the relative values of somatic and otolith growth, which corresponded to the transition
from pelagic larvae to settlement stage. Simultaneously, the daily increment width reached the maximum value. These findings
suggest that age at maximum value of increment width can be used as an indicator of the planktonic larval duration while settlement
mark is not found. Since ontogenetic shift in the relationship between otolith radius and body size was observed, back-calculation
of somatic growth in black-spot tuskfish using the otolith radius during the early life stages should be analyzed with caution,

Elk (Cervus elaphus) populations in Rocky Mountain National Park are higher than at any time in the past century, and heavy browsing by elk may interfere with aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) regneration. We used aerial photographs to identify all aspen stands within Rocky Mountain National Park, and all aspen stands within the elk winter range range (defined as 2400 to 2800 m elevation) in three portions of the adjacent Roosevelt National Forest. From this population of aspen stands, we randomly selected 57 stands for evaluation of aspen regeneration. Stands that contained stems younger than 30 years and taller than 2.5 m tall were classified as regenerating successfully. Only 20% of the aspen stands in Estes Valley contained a cohort of regenerating aspen stems, whereas 45-to-75% of aspen stands across the larger landscape of the Front Range had regenerating cohorts of aspen. Within the elk winter range of the Roosevelt National Forest, 13 of 17 aspen stands were regenerating. In the elk winter range on the east side of the Park but outside of Estes Valley, 11 of 15 aspen stands were regenerating successfully. Only a few aspen stands exist in the elk winter range on the western side of the Park, and none of the five aspen stands sampled in Kawuneeche Valley had a regenerating cohort. The lack of regeneration in Kawuneeche Valley may result from locally heavy elk use in both winter and summer. In the summer elk range at higher elevations in the Park (2800 to 3200 m), 16 of 23 stands had regenerated. At landscape scales, all locations outside of the heavily impacted Estes Valley averaged about two cohorts/stand that regenerated after the mid-1960s. All stands that lacked a regenerating cohort showed evidence of moderate-to-severe damage from elk browsing of stems. No regenerating stands showed evidence of severe browsing. We conclude that at landscape scales, regeneration within aspen stands is very common across the Front Range, except in local areas of the highest elk use where little regeneration has occurred in the past 30 years. 相似文献

The microbicidal activities of mixtures of quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) and food additive grade calcium hydroxide (FdCa(OH)2) were evaluated in a suspension test at −20°C using an anti-freeze agent (AFA) containing methanol, or at 1°C, with varying contact time, toward avian influenza virus (AIV), Newcastle disease virus (NDV), fowl adenovirus (FAdV), avian reovirus (ARV), Salmonella Infantis (SI) and Escherichia coli (EC). At −20°C, the mixtures could inactivate AIV and NDV within 30 min, FAdV and ARV within 5 sec, and SI and EC within 3 min, respectively. AFA did not inactivate viruses and bacteria within 30 min and 10 min, respectively. At 1°C, the mixtures inactivated FAdV and ARV within 30 sec, AIV within 10 min, and NDV within 30 min. A mixture of slaked lime (SL) and QAC could inactivate FAdV and ARV within 30 sec, but could not inactivate AIV and NDV even after 60 min at 1°C. SL could not substitute FdCa(OH)2 in order to exert the synergistic effects with QAC. Thus, QACs microbicidal activities were maintained or enhanced by adding FdCa(OH)2. Age and growth during immature stages of the mangrove red snapper Lutjanus argentimaculatus were examined using 129 sectioned otoliths of fish collected in rivers and coastal areas around Ishigaki Island. Monthly changes in the marginal growth index indicated that ring marks (inner edge of opaque zone) are formed once a year around May. Estimated ages of the sampled fish ranged from 0.2 to 4.5 years. The proportion of mangrove red snappers collected in each sampling set in the rivers was associated with age, namely, the older the fish, the smaller the proportion. This result suggests that the mangrove red snapper gradually moves from the river habitat to coastal areas with increasing age between 1 and 3 years. The relationship between standard length (Y; cm) and age (X; year) was expressed by the linear regression Y = 6.30X + 5.41. Both the somatic and otolith growth of age-one and age-two fish collected in coastal areas were faster than those of fish collected in rivers, suggesting that individuals with fast growth leave the rivers earlier than those with slow growth. Whereas the basic growth pattern obtained in this study is similar to that of the mangrove red snapper in waters around Great Barrier Reef, Australia, there is a clear difference in length of time spent in rivers between the two populations, probably associated with the difference in the scale of the rivers used as nursery grounds. 相似文献

Although emperors (Lethrinidae) are commercially important fisheries resources in tropical and subtropical waters, their home
range size and its spatial arrangement have not been sufficiently clarified. In the present study, the size and spatial arrangement
of the daytime home range of the thumbprint emperor Lethrinus harak were investigated by using a portable GPS receiver. In a 150 m × 200 m quadrat, 21 individuals of the species were identified
by their color pattern, and individuals were divided into four arbitrary size classes (class 1 < 20 cm TL ≤ class 2 < 25 cm
TL ≤ class 3 < 30 cm TL ≤ class 4). Fish tracking by snorkeling was conducted with the portable GPS receiver. Daytime site
fidelity of this species was high and there was a significant positive correlation between the home range size and fish total
length. Home ranges of same-sized individuals abutted each other (20.3% area overlap), whereas those of different-sized individuals
overlapped (48.3% area overlap). Agonistic behavior (attacking) occurred significantly more frequently between same-sized
individuals than between different-sized individuals. These results suggest that daytime home ranges of Lethrinus harak can be regarded as territories against same-sized individuals, but not different-sized individuals. 相似文献
