Past,current and future drivers for the development of decision support systems in forest management
The potential for development in decision support for forest management is set by decision theory, available technology and methods. Demands for decision support are emerging from contemporary challenges and problems of forest management which act as stimuli for the science community. Objectives and approaches in forest management as well as technologies have been changing throughout history. Accordingly, the demand for tools to support planning and decision-making has evolved. In this contribution, the authors review the historic development of decision support systems (DSS) for forest management and discuss past, current and future drivers. Based on evidence from scientific literature, case studies in the frame of the Forest Management Decision Support Systems (FORSYS) action, as well as experiences of the authors some hypotheses about the future of DSS are drawn. It is shown that in the past, the drivers evolving from forest management as well as decision support technologies have influenced the way of how models and methods have been applied as well as how DSS architectures have been designed. It is concluded that in the future, the challenges for DSS development will increase, as the complexity of decision-making processes and the related models will compete with the user demands which ask for simplicity. 相似文献

Near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) is known for its inexpensiveness, rapidity and accuracy and may become a useful tool for the assessment of soil quality. Objectives were (i) to evaluate the ability of NIRS to predict several chemical and biological properties of organically managed arable soils as well as the properties of grain yield from winter cereals for a closed population and (ii) to test whether the use of field-moist and pre-treated (quick-freezing followed by freeze-drying and grinding) samples will generate similar results. One hundred and sixteen soil samples from nine organically managed farms from Germany sampled in 2005 and 2006 were used for this investigation. Spectra of the near-infrared region (including the visible range, 400–2500 nm) from field-moist (<2 mm) or pre-treated soil samples were recorded. A modified partial least-square regression method and cross-validation were used to develop an equation over the whole spectrum (first–third derivation). For the pre-treated soils, good predictions were obtained for pH, contents of organic C, total N, plant-available P (Olsen) and exchangeable K (calcium-acetate-lactate (CAL)), contents of microbial biomass C and N (Cmic and Nmic) and ergosterol, basal respiration, metabolic quotient, the ratio of organic C/total N, the grain yield of winter cereals and grain nitrogen uptake. The RSC (the ratio of standard deviation of laboratory results to standard error of cross-validation) was greater than 2.0, the correlation coefficients (r) of a linear regression (measured against predicted values) were greater than or equal to 0.9 and the regression coefficients (a) ranged from 0.9 to 1.1. Similar good predictions were obtained if field-moist samples were used, with the exception of P (Olsen), K (CAL), metabolic quotient, grain yield of winter cereals and grain nitrogen uptake (satisfactory predictions) and ergosterol content (unsatisfactory prediction). Good predictions of the contents of Mg (CaCl2) and microbial biomass P (Pmic) were achieved for field-moist but not for pre-treated samples. Despite sample preparation, only satisfactory predictions were obtained for the ratios of Cmic/Nmic and ergosterol/Cmic and grain nitrogen content (1.4RSC2.0, r0.8 and 0.8a1.2). However, unsatisfactory predictions for field-moist and pre-treated samples were achieved for the content of P (CAL), the nitrogen mineralisation rate and the ratios of Cmic/Pmic and basal respiration/nitrogen mineralisation rate. Our results demonstrate that biological soil properties can be predicted with NIRS for closed populations in both sample states. The pre-treatment should be used if samples have to be stored prior to infrared measurements for periods longer than a month. 相似文献

The Bavarian Turnip (Bayerische Rübe, Brassica rapa L. em. Metzg. var. rapa) is a nearly lost crop today. Until 1900, this local variety was commonly grown in Bavaria for human consumption. The special and very distinct characters of this variety in comparison with recent breeds are preferred by the farmers families and assured the persistence and survival of this turnip in situ (on farm). In the region of Dachau and Freising, located north of Munich, only four farms are known, where this old crop is still grown and maintained. Export of organic and inorganic pollutants from the unsaturated zone of manufactured gas plant (MGP) sites may endanger groundwater quality. The release and mobility of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and iron‐cyanide complexes (FeCN) in soils from a former MGP site were studied in column and batch experiments. The unsaturated column experiment involved two parts. (1) The development of steady‐state effluent concentrations was studied under constant irrigation. (2) Rate‐limited contaminant release was studied by the system's response to flow interruption. Transport data were supplemented by a sequential batch‐desorption experiment. During constant irrigation the initial concentrations of total PAH and FeCN, but also the concentration of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were higher than the steady state level, indicating that a specific fraction of the DOC and the contaminants was readily mobilized. Cyanide reached a constant effluent concentration after seven pore volumes (pvs), whereas equilibration of effluent PAH took 20 pvs. After flow interruption, rate‐limited release of DOC, PAH, and FeCN was observed by increased effluent concentrations. Comparison of FeCN levels with theoretical equilibrium concentrations indicated that in addition to the dissolution of iron(II)ferrocyanide (Berlin Blue), Fe4[Fe(CN)6]3, other cyanide‐species may control the release and such the mobility of FeCN. This was confirmed by decreasing FeCN concentrations during sequential batch extractions. Due to rate‐limited release, seepage water concentrations of DOC, PAH, and FeCN in alkaline MGP soils are influenced by the flow regime. Experiments performed at continuous irrigation may therefore severely underestimate the release of PAH and FeCN under field conditions. The effect of DOC on the release and mobility of PAH and FeCN under transient conditions has to be further investigated. 相似文献

Twenty-four flocks comprising 2370 breeding goats were examined. Three hundred-and-sixty-nine (15.6%) of the goats either aborted or delivered dead kids at full term, or were barren. In 23 of the herds the rate of reproductive loss ranged from 2% to 36%, whereas in one herd all of 54 mated goats had live kids. A loss of greater than or equal to 20% was found in 9 herds comprising 799 goats. In 11 herds comprising 946 goats the rate of reproductive failure was less than or equal to 10%. The incidence of reproductive failure was higher in older goats than in those in their first or second pregnancy. The causes were identified in only about 3% of the goats that aborted. It is concluded that reproductive failure in many flocks probably is associated with non-infectious causes such as nutritional and environmental factors. 相似文献

Laccases- or laccase-like multicopper oxidases (LMCO) catalyze the oxidation of various substrates, such as phenols, diamines and metals, coupled with the reduction of molecular oxygen to water. Compared to studies on function and diversity of LMCO in plants and fungi, little is known about this enzyme type in bacteria and especially on their possible implication in degradation of organic matter in soils. This study presents a molecular investigation of the diversity and distribution of bacterial LMCO genes among three upper horizons of a forest Cambisol and in a grassland Cambisol. Some culture strains of soil bacteria were also analyzed at the molecular level and for their capability to oxidize naturally occurring 2,6-dimethoxyphenol, a LMCO substrate. A high LMCO gene diversity was found in the Cambisol soil samples with 16 distinct sequence type clades, of which approximately one half was not matching with any reference sequence of known bacteria. The highest richness of bacterial LMCO genes was observed in the organic horizon of the forest soil, which is concomitant with a previous analysis of the diversity of fungal laccase genes and corresponding soil laccase activity. Some clusters of sequence types showed a specific distribution in one of the soils or in horizons, while others appeared more ubiquist. Multiple bacterial LMCO genes were described in Agromyces salentinus and Sinorhizobium morelense, what so far was only known from fungi. 相似文献

A soil management regime that improves water use efficiency (WUE) is urgently required to increase the sustainability of the winter wheat-summer fallow system in the Loess Plateau, China. However, the long-term partitioning of the water balance must be understood in order to evaluate the viability of possible soil management regimes. Therefore, an ecosystem model (CoupModel) was used to explore the effects on components of the water balance of five types of soil management regimes: conventional practice, wheat straw mulching, incorporation of high organic matter contents, compaction, and use of a harvested fallow crop. Three variants of the fallow crop approach were also considered, in which the crop was harvested 15, 30 and 45 days before sowing the wheat (designated Fallow-15d, Fallow-30d and Fallow-45d, respectively). Simulations were used to identify the relative magnitude of soil evaporation, wheat transpiration and deep percolation and to elucidate the temporal variability in these components for a selected location using climate records spanning 45 years. However, the soil management regime significantly influenced the magnitude of every component of the water balance (in terms of minimum, maximum and mean values) over the long periods considered. Consequently, wheat yield and WUE differed significantly among the simulated treatments. Mulching led to significantly lower soil evaporation, higher transpiration, and more frequent and extensive deep percolation than other regimes, thereby improving fallow efficiency (percentage of rainfall stored in the soil during the fallow period at the end of the fallow period), wheat yields and WUE. In contrast, soil compaction gave the opposite results, leading to the most unfavourable partitioning of the water balance reflected in the lowest wheat yield and WUE values of all the regimes. In 90% of the years no deep percolation occurred in the soil compaction simulations. Use of a fallow crop with optimal harvest timing (Fallow-30d) improved partitioning of the water balance (decreased soil evaporation) and did not significantly reduce wheat yield compared with conventional practice. High organic matter contents in the soil also had a positive influence on the water balance and improved wheat yield and WUE relative to conventional practice. Therefore, mulching appears to be the best management practice for the winter wheat-summer fallow system in the Loess Plateau, according to the simulations. Increasing soil organic matter may be the best option if mulching cannot be implemented. The ideal time for harvesting a fallow crop for use as green manure or fodder appears to be ca. 30 days before sowing the winter wheat. 相似文献
