In association with industry, an extensive database has been established on measurements of sea louse counts on farmed Atlantic salmon for the years 1996 to 2000 from 33 Scottish fish farms. These data include extensive counts on the sea louse species, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, at various stages of the life cycle and in particular the chalimus and mobile stages. There has been considerable speculation as to what factors might affect the abundance of sea lice, much of which is based on limited evidence. Our analyses show that there is tremendous variation in sea louse infestation patterns from year to year, whereas stock type, geographical region and coastal exposure do not appear to affect mean levels of abundance. In contrast, treatments lead to pronounced cycles of sea louse infestation with peaks and troughs at 3-week intervals, and these interventions are important if the sea louse levels on fish are to be controlled. There was no evidence of water temperature affecting the mean annual abundance of sea louse infestation.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To present details of surgical management of an unusual vascular ring anomaly in two German Shepherd littermates. STUDY DESIGN: Clinical case report. STUDY POPULATION: Three-month-old intact male and female German Shepherd littermates. RESULTS: In each dog, the esophagus was obstructed by a vascular ring comprised of the left aortic arch, an anomalous patent right ductus arteriosus, and the pulmonary artery ventrally. Surgical treatment consisted of dividing and oversewing the patent right ductus arteriosus. Neither dog has clinical signs of esophageal disease one year after treatment. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This vascular ring anomaly should be considered a possibility in any young dog with esophageal obstruction and a machinery murmur.  相似文献

Predictions of future climate change include shifts in patterns of precipitation, evapotranspiration and water run‐off, resulting in increased periods of drought as well as variability and intensity of rainfall events. In the United Kingdom, the non‐native North American sunfish, pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus (L.), is expected to benefit from these changes. We examine how hydrological variability induced by predicted changes in climate will affect the dispersal and spread of pumpkinseed in England by: (i) determining the relationship between discharge regime and pumpkinseed propagule pressure; (ii) examining a newly‐established pumpkinseed population following a flood event in 2007; and (iii) comparing the growth and life‐history traits of this new population with fish collected from the source population to demonstrate how the pumpkinseed's life‐history plasticity contributes to its success as a coloniser. Using Bayesian modelling, we determined that the number of pumpkinseed escapees is likely to increase with increasing discharge. The newly‐established pumpkinseed population showed fast juvenile growth, early age at maturity and small size at maturity. These traits differed significantly from the source population, specifically total length (TL) means at ages 1 and 2 were significantly greater in the new population, whereas TL at age 4 was significantly greater in the source population, and a significantly higher proportion of mature females were found at smaller size classes in the newly established pumpkinseed population. This study demonstrates the potential link between hydrological variability (current and future) and the dispersal of non‐native pumpkinseed, leading to the establishment of new populations.  相似文献

Selection was applied from 1964 to 1978 for increased weaning weight (WWL) or yearling weight (YWL) in two Hereford lines with an Angus line maintained as an unselected control line (CL). Each line was maintained with 50 cows and four sires (two sires selected each year and each used for 2 yr). Traits analyzed were birth weight (BW), preweaning daily gain (WDG), weaning weight (WW), weaning conformation grade (WG), weaning condition score (WC), weaning to yearling daily gain (YDG), yearling weight (YW), yearling conformation grade (YG) and yearling condition score (YC). After 15 yr of selection, a total of 3.22 generations of selection had occurred in both WWL and YWL. Average selection differentials in standard measure per generation for WWL, YWL and CL, respectively, were: BW, .44, .51, .0; WDG, .95, .81, .09; WW, .97, .85, .09; WG, .66, .57, .09; WC, .60, .38, -.02; YDG, .30, .79, .38; YW, .80, 1.05, .25; YG, .63, .62, .34 and YC, .45, .64, .24. The proportionate contribution of sire selection (delta S) to the average midparent selection differential per generation (delta M) was 70% in WWL and 76% in YWL.
