Fatty acid analyses of seed lipids were performed for 28 populations representing three widely distributed Cuphea species. Locality and climatic data for all samples were also compiled. The objectives of this study were to examine the extent of variation in seed oil composition among the wild populations, and to discover any patterns of relationship between fatty acid composition of seed oils and environmental factors. While we found the dominant fatty acid in the oil of each species remained consistent over the environmental and geographical ranges of the samples in the present study, variation as high as 30.6% in the amount of the dominant fatty acid produced was observed. Correlation analysis between fatty acid composition and the individual environmental factors of latitude, elevation or temperature showed no consistent pattern of influence. However, when considered together, the interaction of all three, and especially latitude and elevation, contributed significantly to the variation among populations. Environmental data at microhabitat level and through controlled environmental experiments will be needed for more precise understanding of factors affecting Cuphea seed oil composition at the population level.  相似文献

Context

The switching pattern between behavioral modes provides a mechanistic basis for understanding how animals perceive and memorize the habitat quality in their home ranges.

Objectives

We assessed if Magellanic woodpeckers (Campephilus magellanicus) move based on habitat quality at local (neighboring trees) and home range scales.

Methods

We used state-space models to examine the relationship between remotely-sensed estimates of habitat quality (tree decay) and movement of adult woodpeckers tracked with GPS telemetry in southern Chile.

Results

Woodpeckers spent most time (>?80%) in the area-restricted search (ARS) mode in contrast to the exploratory transient mode, characterized by frequent directional displacements (>?50 m). The extent to which individuals switched between behavioral modes was related to habitat quality at different scales. Woodpeckers switched to and remained in the ARS mode when encountering moderate levels of heterogeneity in habitat quality. At very low or high heterogeneity levels, however, individuals switched to and remained in the transient mode, respectively. Likewise, as habitat quality declined locally and across home range, woodpeckers were more likely to adopt a transient mode.

Conclusions

Although woodpeckers seemed to easily perceive and memorize habitat quality at different spatial scales, our results suggest that spatial memory will less effective under extreme levels of habitat heterogeneity.

Abstract

During the last century increasing human trade networks have interacted with other global changes – such as land use and climate change – to accelerate the range expansion of pest species worldwide. In this special issue, we present a series of articles that model the risk of establishment and spread of non-native harmful species, as well as shifts in the distribution of native pest species. We also provide a state-of the art review of the available literature on species distribution models for pests, weeds, and pathogens. Recent advances in modelling approaches have allowed us to significantly improve our abilities to predict changes in species distribution, and these tools have been widely used to enhance biosecurity planning and pest management. We expect that this special issue contributes toward and integration of the scientific knowledge and the development of novel approaches to model pest species distribution, as well as to better understand the factors that influence their expansion in the context of a rapidly changing world.  相似文献

Application of organic amendment to the soil surface is widely used in order to ameliorate topsoil physical conditions, especially with respect to temperature, evaporation and water content. Water intercepted by mulch and crop canopy involves loss through evaporation that never replenishes the soil water. In this study, hydrological and temperature conditions beneath mulches of manufactured materials, organic waste, wheat straw (Tritium aestivum L.) and soybean straw (Glycine max L. Merrill) applied at different thickness were investigated in glasshouse and field conditions in southern England. Interception loss by a maize (Zea mays L.) canopy and mulch modified the soil water balance by adversely affecting soil water content beneath thicker application. Mulching had a beneficial effect on soil water and temperature regimes. These findings are important for identifying mulching practices for dryland agriculture and under scenarios of climatic change that predict lower rainfall and higher temperatures in summer.  相似文献

Porifera, commonly referred to as marine sponges, are acknowledged as major producers of marine natural products (MNPs). Sponges of the genus Phorbas have attracted much attention over the years. They are widespread in all continents, and several structurally unique compounds have been identified from this species. Terpenes, mainly sesterterpenoids, are the major secondary metabolites isolated from Phorbas species, even though several alkaloids and steroids have also been reported. Many of these compounds have presented interesting biological activities. Particularly, Phorbas sponges have been demonstrated to be a source of cytotoxic metabolites. In addition, MNPs exhibiting cytostatic, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activities have been isolated and structurally characterized. This review provides an overview of almost 130 secondary metabolites from Phorbas sponges and their biological activities, and it covers the literature since the first study published in 1993 until November 2021, including approximately 60 records. The synthetic routes to the most interesting compounds are briefly outlined.  相似文献

The main goal of this study was to find bacterial isolates with the ability to inhibit the growth of the fish pathogens Aeromonas hydrophila, Vibrio anguillarum, and Flavobacterium psychrophilum and to inhibit the blockage of the quorum-sensing (QS) system. A total of 80 gram-negative strains isolated from various freshwater Chilean salmonid farms were studied. We determined that 10 strains belonging to the genus Pseudomonas inhibited at least one of the assayed fish pathogens. Of these, nine strains were able to produce siderophores and two strains were able to inhibit the growth of all assayed pathogenic species. When the 80 strains were examined for QS-blocking activity, only the strains Pseudomonas sp. FF16 and Raoultella planticola R5B1 were identified as QS blockers. When the QS-blocker strains were analyzed for their ability to produce homoserine lactone (HSL) molecules, thin-layer chromatography analysis showed that both strains were able to produce C6-HSL– and C8-HSL–type molecules. Strain R5B1 did not show growth inhibition properties, but strain FF16 also led to inhibition of growth in A. hydrophila and F. psychrophilum as well as to siderophore production. Pseudomonas sp. FF16 exhibited potentially useful antagonistic properties and could be a probiotic candidate for the salmon farming industry.

A mechanism is proposed for the Formation of tidal creeks in salt marshes which is exemplified by the marshes of the Rio Gallegos estuary, Argentina. It has been observed that salt pans are elongated in the mean wind direction and are likely to extend by wave erosion of the surrounding marshes. Interconnection between the pans leads to growth and interaction with existing creeks and channels. Tidal exchange of the waters then promotes further erosion, or subsequently to filling in by the introduced suspended sediment. This mechanism contrasts with headward erosion by existing creeks.  相似文献

Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were used for assessing genetic diversity and its structure in a collection of the drought-tolerant, tropical multipurpose shrub legume Flemingia macrophylla (Willd.) Merrill. The species is especially suited to low-input smallholder production systems and is used as dry season forage supplement, live soil cover, mulch and living barrier, among others. Genetic groups identified by RAPD analysis related closely to four morphotypes revealed by multivariate analysis of morphological, agronomic and forage quality characteristics. Overall genetic diversity in the collection was moderate (H T = 0.241), with 79% differentiation among and high genetic similarity (GS) within groups (0.672–0.965). Results indicate a closer relationship of the semi-erect morphotypes M3 and M4 with F. stricta rather than with the erect morphotype M1. The latter was genetically the most depauperate, followed by morphotypes M2 and M4. New evidence is provided that non-Asian accessions collected in Africa and South America are derived from introduced Southeast Asian material. Furthermore, RAPD data suggest the presence of duplicates in the collection, especially in the overrepresented erect morphotype M1.  相似文献
