1. Rates of muscle protein turnover, growth, and food consumption were determined in 4 lines of chickens selected for either weight gain (line W), food consumption (line F), efficiency of food conversion (line E), or at random (line C) and in two Australian commercial broiler strains (S and H). These measures were related to body composition and the circulating concentrations of plasma growth hormone (GH) and IGF-I. 2. N tau-methylhistidine excretion was 10-14% higher in line F and 7-13% lower in line E compared to line C, showing divergence in the rate of muscle protein breakdown with selection. 3. There were no differences between the 4 experimental lines (W, F, E and C) in muscle protein fractional synthesis rates, whether calculated from N tau-methylhistidine excretion or measured directly by 3H-phenylalanine incorporation. 4. No consistent differences were found between lines in circulating concentrations of either GH or IGF-I but plasma IGF-I concentrations were positively correlated over all lines with protein accretion rates. There was a strong inverse correlation over all lines between the rates of protein degradation and FCR. 5. The correlated responses in protein degradation rates are consistent with the notion of a positive genetic association between the overall efficiency of food utilisation for growth and the efficiency of protein metabolism.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the 3-dimensional motion pattern including main and coupled motions of the caudal lumbar and lumbosacral portions of the vertebral column of dogs. ANIMALS: Vertebral columns of 9 German Shepherd Dogs (GSDs) and 16 dogs of other breeds with similar body weights and body conditions. PROCEDURE: Main and coupled motions of the caudal lumbar and lumbosacral portions of the vertebral column (L4 to S1) were determined by use of a testing apparatus that permitted precise application of known pure moments to the vertebral column. Motion was compared between GSDs and dogs of other breeds. RESULTS: All specimens had a similar motion pattern consisting of main motion and a certain amount of coupled motion including translation. Vertebral columns of GSDs had significantly less main motion in all directions than that of dogs of other breeds. Translation was similar in GSDs and dogs of other breeds and was smallest at the lumbosacral motion segment. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results indicated that motion in the caudal lumbar and lumbosacral portions of the vertebral column of dogs is complex and provided a basis for further studies evaluating abnormal vertebral columns.  相似文献

To detect estrus for reproductive management, and to determine the relationship between urinary estrogen and estrous behavior, in a female giant panda, we developed and evaluated a rapid enzyme immunoassay (EIA) system for urinary Estrone-3-glucuronide (E1G) using commercial reagents. The developed EIA system took only around 3 hours, including all procedures to obtain a result. It indicated good reproducibility (intra-assay CV of 5.16%, interassay CV of 15.4%) and sensitivity (lowest standard concentration was 0.0156 ng/ml) for measurement of the urinary concentrations of E1G in the giant panda. There was a positive correlation (r=0.934) with the data for estrone (E1) in the same samples, as measured by radioimmunoassay (RIA) performed in a commercial laboratory. The changes in the E1G concentrations were almost synchronous with the changes in E1 assayed by RIA in urine collected during 4 consecutive estrous seasons. The dynamics of urinary E1G measured by this system highly correlated with the occurrence of the presenting estrous behavior in the giant panda. The above results indicate that this assay system may be normally, rapidly and practically used for measurement of the urinary concentration of E1G in the giant panda.  相似文献

Serum samples from 248 adult dairy goats from 13 flocks with lowered fertility farmed in the Rio de Janeiro region of Brazil were examined for Leptospira antibodies by MAT with 24 serovars, cut off 100. A questionnaire was completed for each herd. Antibodies were detected in 20.8% of these goats, mainly to serovar Hardjo. Risk factors associated with seroprevalence to leptospirosis were the frequency of professional veterinary supervision (OR = 2.35), climate (OR = 2.63) and grazing for more than 2h a day. Flock factors as size, type of milking and offering of food supplementation, as well as the location and topography, the type of animal housing or the presence of silos did not significantly affect seroprevalence. We suggest that a successful control program for goat leptospirosis should include a complete investigation of herd management practices, which could influence in the occurrence of the infection.  相似文献

The baffle-fitted labyrinth channel is commonly used in micro-irrigation systems. The flow in this labyrinth channel has a rather low-Reynolds number. In addition, emitter clogging, which is the major drawback of the micro-irrigation technique, is significantly related to flow characteristics. In order to design an anti-clogging emitter with a good performance, the hydrodynamics must be understood and analyzed. As CFD modeling is nowadays the most efficient approach for improving emitter geometry, this paper presents assessment of several k\(\varepsilon\) turbulence models for computation of micro-irrigation emitter hydrodynamics. The objective is to determine the simplest and most efficient model to improve emitter conception, in terms of both discharge/pressure loss and limitation of the areas where low velocity is likely to generate emitter clogging. Low-Reynolds number k\(\varepsilon\) models are often assumed to be more suitable for the labyrinth-channel flow since these models have no wall functions, they can take into account low turbulence levels and they account for the effect of damped turbulence. The low-Reynolds number k\(\varepsilon\) models used in the present study are compared to high-Reynolds number k\(\varepsilon\) models. Very different trends are observed between low-Reynolds number k\(\varepsilon\) models. Some models reproduce a turbulent behavior, while others reproduce a laminar behavior. The head loss analysis reveals that, contrary to classical smooth pipe flow, the contribution of turbulent dissipation cannot be neglected since its contribution is larger than wall friction ones. This feature explains why different models can induce quite different flow behavior.  相似文献

A 5‐year‐old neutered male Mastiff and an 8‐year‐old spayed female Labrador Retriever were presented to the University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center. The Mastiff was presented for evaluation of lameness and pyoderma one month prior in Missouri, where he tested positive for Ehrlichia canis by serum ELISA test, treated with doxycycline. PCR for Ehrlichia sp, Anaplasma sp, Babesia sp, and Bartonella sp, and PCR for antigen receptor rearrangement were negative, serum protein electrophoresis (SPE) revealed polyclonal gammopathy, and mildly reactive lymphoid cells were seen cytologically. The Labrador presented with a proliferative rostral mandibular gingival mass and lipomas for further presurgical evaluation of cold agglutinin activity documented by a commercial laboratory 2 years earlier prior to removal of a grade II mast cell tumor. This dog had a negative SNAP4Dx, normal SPE, and persistently increased serum ALP activity and polyuria/polydipsia suggestive for hyperadrenocorticism. Both dogs had markedly agglutinated RBC in the EDTA samples that dispersed with warming, and normal plasma color. Cold agglutinin activity was demonstrated by direct saline agglutination testing using whole blood and washed erythrocytes demonstrating agglutination at 30°C, 25°C, 15°C, and 4°C, but not at 37°C . CBC results (ADVIA 2120i) from the Mastiff revealed no significant differences in the RBC results obtained at room temperature (RT) and at 37°C; however, the RT run demonstrated negative bias in neutrophil and platelet concentrations attributed to rapid RBC settling. This uncommon hematologic condition may cause artifacts on the automated leukogram and platelet count, and may be subclinical for long periods.  相似文献

Multiple congenital or developmental anomalies associated with the central nervous system have been reported in English Bulldogs. The purpose of this retrospective study was to identify and describe the prevalence and MRI characteristics of these anomalies and their association with presence and degree of cerebral ventriculomegaly. Magnetic resonance imaging studies of 50 English Bulldogs were evaluated. Forty‐eight dogs had some degree of cerebral ventriculomegaly, 27 of which had an otherwise normal brain. Presence of lateral ventriculomegaly was not significantly associated with presence of another intracranial lesion. Appearance of the septum pellucidum was variable, ranging from intact to incomplete or completely absent. The corpus callosum was subjectively thinned in all but three dogs, two of which had normal lateral ventricles. Fusion of the rostral colliculi was not found in any dog. A persistent craniopharyngeal canal was identified in one dog. Aqueductal stenosis caused by fusion of the rostral colliculi was not identified in any dog. Findings indicated that cerebral ventriculomegaly is a common finding in English Bulldogs with or without other intracranial lesions, aqueductal stenosis caused by fusion of the rostral colliculi is unlikely to be a common etiology leading to obstructive hydrocephalus, and a large craniopharyngeal canal is a rare finding that has unknown clinical significance at this time.  相似文献
