This study reports experimental evidence on the effect of short-term potassium fertilization on potassium uptake, tissue concentration and hydraulic conductance of pot-grown laurel plants. Potassium uptake and loading into the xylem of laurel seedlings increased within 24 h after fertilization. Potassium was not accumulated in roots and leaves, but the [K(+)] of xylem sap was 80% higher in fertilized plants (+K) than in potassium-starved plants (-K), as a likely result of recirculation between xylem and phloem. Increased xylem sap [K(+)] resulted in a 45% increase in transpiration rate, a 30% increase in plant hydraulic conductance (K(plant)) and a 120% increase in leaf-specific conductivity of the shoot (k(shoot)). We suggest that this increase was due to ion-mediated up-regulation of xylem hydraulics, possibly caused by the interaction of potassium ions with the pectic matrix of intervessel pits. The enhancement of hydraulic conductance following short-term potassium fertilization is a phenomenon that can be of advantage to plants for maintaining cell turgor, stomatal aperture and gas exchange rates under moderate drought stress. Our data provide additional support for the important role of potassium nutrition in agriculture and forestry. 相似文献

The Azores provide an excellent field test for research activities aimed at developing conservation strategies for endangered tree species. In this work, the urgency to promote Picconia azorica conservation programs addressed (a) insights into the biotaxonomy of the species (including an evaluation of its origin and relationships with the only congeneric species of P. azorica: P. excelsa from the Canary and Madeira islands) and (b) the evaluation of P. azorica genetic diversity. Plastid DNA sequence analysis and molecular markers (RFLP and SSR) were used for this purpose. Phylogenetic data suggest the monophyly of Picconia and support a late Miocene divergence of the two species. Three polymorphic cpSSR loci allowed the identification of five different haplotypes in P. azorica. Uniqueness and relictuality of lineages are presented and discussed. Picconia azorica intra-specific diversity patterns revealed low genetic diversity and a weak genetic structure, which could result from long-lasting ecological stability and efficient inter-island seed movement that have been severely affected in recent times. The species survival is at risk, and we suggest management practices focusing on ex situ and in situ conservation units based on eco-genetic data. Additional measures contributing to mild erosion of the genepool and to remove barriers to seed dispersal are indicated. 相似文献

This paper reports the results of a study conducted in Italy, within the AGFORWARD (2014–2017) project, aimed at promoting innovative agroforestry practices in Europe. Agroforestry offers a means for maintaining food production whilst addressing some of the negative environmental effects of intensive agriculture. This study aims to elicit the positive and negative points of view and perceptions of local stakeholders in Italy in relation to three types of agroforestry systems. The Participatory Research and Network Development was implemented in three workshops conducted in Sardinia, Umbria, and Veneto regions, and applied adopting a common methodological protocol. Qualitative data were obtained using open discussions with stakeholders on key issues, challenges and innovations. Quantitative data were obtained from stakeholders completing questionnaires during the workshops. A statistical analysis was applied to elicit the differences in stakeholders’ positive and negative perceptions in relation to production, management, environment and socio-economy aspects. Although the participants in the study came from different geographical and socioeconomic contexts with varied educational and cultural backgrounds, the different professional groups (farmers, policy-makers and researchers) and the three workshops generally shared similar perceptions of the benefits and constraints. The effects of agroforestry on production and the environment were generally perceived as positive, whilst those related to management were generally negative. The process of bringing the groups together seemed to be an effective means for identifying the key research gaps that need to be addressed in order to promote the uptake and maintenance of agroforestry. 相似文献

Climate changes induced by the anthropogenic alteration of the atmospheric radiative balance are expected to change the productivity and composition of forest ecosystems. In Europe, the Mediterranean is considered one of the most vulnerable regions according to climatic forecasts and simulations. However, although modifications in the inter-specific competition are envisaged, we still lack a clear understanding of the ability of the Mediterranean vegetation to adapt to climate changes. We investigated how two co-occurring tree species commonly used in afforestation programmes, the native Abies alba Mill. and the nonnative Picea abies L. Karst., adapt to climate change by assessing their growth performance and physiological responses in relation to past climate variability. Growth was addressed by analysing tree-ring width and carbon and oxygen stable isotopes. Statistical relationships between isotopic value and monthly climate data suggest that the two species underwent ecophysiological adaptation to Mediterranean climatic constraints. These adaptations are also expressed in the ring-width data. Based on the carbon isotope ratio reflecting the stomatal response to drought, we found that the precipitation in the first period of the growing season, i.e. early spring, is a major factor influencing the annual growth of A. alba, which although native, proved to be sensitive to drought. P. abies, on the other hand, showed a higher tolerance to summer drought stress. These findings should help define criteria for sustainability and effective forest conservation in the Mediterranean region. 相似文献

A molecularly imprinted polymer able to recognize melamine in partially aqueous medium was synthesized using methacrylic acid as functional monomer and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as cross-linking agent. The bound specificity and selectivity of the obtained material were verified by performing binding experiments with melamine and its structural analogue, 2,4,6-trimethoxy-1,3,5-triazine, respectively, using different aqueous binding media. Wetlands are effective in the treatment of polluted surface water. A semi-natural wetland pilot plant was established to verify the pollutant abatement effectiveness of the Venice Lagoon inlet water. The unique conditions of this brackish environmental site are: (1) a high concentration of carbonate and low concentrations of sulphides, and (2) the abundance of organic matter in sediments. The goal of this study was to examine how these characteristics influence the metal mobility in the wetland and to compare our results to published literature. The data collected were limited with respect to statistical analysis because the metal concentrations were often below the detection limits. Therefore, we chose to perform non-parametric analyses. To analyse the relationships among heavy metal concentrations and the physical and chemical wetland variables, and to investigate the processes of metal removal, we performed a multivariate statistical analysis and a Spearman correlation analysis. The results indicated that the reduced and basic conditions of the sediments seen in the Venice Lagoon environment facilitated the removal of metals due to the formation of insoluble compounds with sulphides and carbonates. 相似文献

Background : Adaptation of pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.] to low soil phosphorus (P) at early seedling stages and efficient P fertilizer application are crucial for its survival in the West African Sahel. While addition of to P in the microdose technique has been reported to stimulate early growth of pearl millet, there is little information regarding root length (RL) at different timings. Aims : Our study aimed at assessing the effects of added and to P on (1) pearl millet agronomic traits such as root and shoot growth and (2) the water use dynamics during the cropping cycle. Methods : Twenty‐four “RhizoTubes” filled with P‐deficient soil were used to grow pearl millet under three treatments: (T1) placed P addition alone at 0.4 g per seed hole, Pplaced, (T2) Pplaced + , and (T3) Pplaced + . At 2, 3, 4, and 5 weeks after sowing (WAS) we took non‐destructive measurements of RL. Water use (transpiration) was measured from 3.5 to 9 WAS. Results : At early growth, roots in the topsoil of T2 were longer than T3 and T1 roots (at 4 WAS: 129.3 cm for T2, 87.5 cm for T3, and 93.3 cm for T1, p < 0.05). Total RL at 2 WAS correlated positively with seedling height and final grain yield. Fertilization with reduced the time to flowering and increased the number of tillers and grain yield, whereas addition of increased vegetative dry matter at harvest and water use efficiency. Conclusions : Our findings suggest that fertilization with plays a critical root stimulating role at early growth stages, seemingly by increasing lateral root initiation, which carries through to a larger water use during grain filling and higher grain yield. 相似文献

Since 1992, efforts to recover the US federally endangered Great Lakes piping plover (Charadrius melodus) have included population supplementation with captive-reared young raised from abandoned eggs. Using banding data collected 1993-2008 and Cormack-Jolly-Seber models in program MARK we estimated resighting rates (ρ) and apparent survival (Φ) of first-year (1) and after-first-year (2+) plovers. Reproductive success was measured by estimating mean number of eggs laid, chicks hatched and chicks fledged per wild-reared or captive-reared parent, and these values were compared with a permutation test. The best-supported mark-resighting model indicated wild-reared plovers had higher Φ1 and Φ2+ than captive-reared plovers. Breeding propensity influenced detection of wild plovers, whereas unique band combinations facilitated detection of yearling captive-reared plovers. Captive-reared (n = 10) and wild-reared (n = 57) plovers laid similar numbers of eggs, but wild-reared plovers hatched 36% more chicks and fledged 56% more young. Reproductive values derived from matrix models suggest captive-reared piping plovers are less fit than similarly aged wild-reared birds upon release and demonstrate reduced fitness in subsequent years. The Great Lakes captive-rearing effort has successfully produced a minimum of 10 breeding adults from 192 eggs that otherwise would have had no reproductive value; these captive-reared individuals now constitute up to 3% of the total population. Small scale salvage and captive-rearing of abandoned eggs should be considered as a technique to supplement existing recovery efforts in highly imperiled populations. 相似文献

A novel, simple, and cheap method to synthesize antioxidant methacrylic-ferulic acid copolymer (PMAA-FA) by free radical polymerization was developed by employing a hydrogen peroxide-ascorbic acid pair to produce hydroxyl radicals acting as radical initiators. FT-IR spectra were performed to verify the insertion of ferulic acid into the polymeric chain, and the antioxidant activity of PMAA-FA was compared to that of a control polymer synthesized in the absence of antioxidant molecule. Good antioxidant activity was demonstrated by obtained materials, showing the efficiency of the polymerization method. This material could be useful in the pharmaceutical field and in the food industry (food packaging). 相似文献
