Water droplets falling onto finished fabrics can create spots which can spoil the appearance of the fabric. This study compares
the propensity of softened filament polylactic acid and polyester fabrics to exhibit the adverse affects of ‘water-spotting’,
and to identify suitable softeners and methods for their application to minimise and eliminate the problem. The degree of
water spotting was greater on softened polylactic acid fabrics than on softened polyester fabrics. Polylactic acid and polyester
fabrics with hydrophobic properties did not exhibit any water spotting. Softeners applied by an exhaustion process resulted
in a finished fabric which exhibited no water spotting for either dyed polylactic acid or dyed polyester fabrics. The softening
active agent was not responsible for the water spotting. The other components in the softener formulation (such as emulsifier,
wetting agent), which carries the unfixed dyes with water, were found to be responsible. The water spot halo disappeared after

Background
Theory in ecology points out the potential link between the degree of specialisation of organisms and their responses to disturbances and suggests that this could be a key element for understanding the assembly of communities. We evaluated this question for the arable weed flora as this group has scarcely been the focus of ecological studies so far and because weeds are restricted to habitats characterised by very high degrees of disturbance. Determining effective measures to alleviate the impact of climate change on crops under various regional environments is one of the most urgent issues facing agriculture. In this study, geographic regions of South Korea for future-adjusted barley cultivation were outlined and the impact of climate change on barley production in the next 100 years was evaluated under two greenhouse gas concentration trajectory scenarios: the representative concentration pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5. To achieve our intended study goals, a geospatial crop simulation modeling (GCSM) scheme was formulated using CERES-barley model of Decision Support System for Agricultural Technology (DSSAT) crop model package version 4.6 to simulate grid-based geospatial crop yields. Two experiments were carried out at an open field to obtain model coefficients for the nation and at temperature gradient field chambers to evaluate the performance of the CERES-barley model under elevated temperature conditions. Suitable cultivation regions for three different types of barley (naked, hooded, and malting) under changing climate were projected to expand to the northern regions under both RCP 8.5 and RCP 4.5. However, they were projected to expand more rapidly under RCP 8.5 than those under RCP 4.5. Projected yields of four barley varieties were increased with a slow phase as year progressed under RCP 4.5 scenario. However, they were rapidly increased under RCP 8.5 scenario. It appears that geospatial variation in barley yield under changing climate can be effectively outlined. Therefore, GCSM system might be useful for determining impacts of climate change on geospatial variations of crops, potentially providing means to impede food insecurity. 相似文献

Bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum) is a warm-season grass used primarily in pastures and along highways and other low maintenance public areas in Florida.
It is also used in landscapes to some extent because of its drought tolerance. Bahiagrass can survive under a range of moisture
conditions from no irrigation to very wet conditions. Its well-watered consumptive use has not been reported previously. In
this study, bahiagrass crop coefficients (K
c) for an irrigated pasture were determined for July 2003 through December 2006 in central Florida. The eddy correlation method
was used to estimate crop evapotranspiration (ETc) rates. The standardized reference evapotranspiration (ETo) equation (ASCE-EWRI standardization of reference evapotranspiration task committee report, 2005) was applied to calculate
ETo values using on site weather data. Daily K
c values were estimated from the ratio of the measured ETc and the calculated ETo. The recommended K
c values for bahiagrass are 0.35 for January–February, 0.55 for March, 0.80 for April, 0.90 for May, 0.75 for June, 0.70 for
July–August, 0.75 for September, 0.70 for October, 0.60 for November, and 0.45 for December in central Florida. The highest
K
c value of 0.9 in May corresponded with maximum vapor pressure deficit conditions as well as cloud free conditions and the
highest incoming solar radiation as compared to the rest of the year. During the summer (June to August), frequent precipitation
events increased the cloud cover and reduced grass water use. The K
c annual trend was similar to estimated K

Rooting space is considered as a resource in plants, but comparative studies on the biomass allocation plasticity in response
to rooting volume (RV) are rare. We compared responses in growth, biomass allocation and ontogenetic heteroblasty in nine
hard pine species of contrasted ecology. Seedlings were cultivated in containers of 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, 2.8 and 7 L for two growing
seasons (425 days). Reduction in RV caused a reduction in plant absolute and relative growth rate and biomass allocated to
stems but it increased biomass allocated to roots. RV affected to a lesser extent and in a less consistent direction allocation
to leaves. Species that grew faster (higher relative growth rate) had a steeper decrease in growth with the reduction in RV.
Ontogenetic heteroblasty, evaluated as the proportion of secondary needles in the needle biomass, showed highly different
plasticity patterns in response to RV. Decrease in RV caused negligible or no change either in the most ontogenetically delayed
Mediterranean pines or in the most ontogenetically advanced pines, the mesic Pinus sylvestris and P. uncinata. By contrast, ontogenetically intermediate species showed steep reaction norms in response to reduction in RV. While P. pinaster and P. brutia showed marked rejuvenation, P. nigra accelerated the development of adult foliage. 相似文献

High-fat diets may have favorable effects on growth and cost, but high-fat diets often induce excessive fat deposition, resulting in liver damage. This study aimed to identify the hepatoprotective of a Chinese herb (berberine) for blunt snout bream (Megalobrama amblycephala). Fish were fed with a normal diet (LFD, 5 % fat), high-fat diet (HFD, 15 % fat) or berberine-supplemented diets (BSD, 15 % fat with berberine 50 or 100 mg/kg level) for 8 weeks. After the feeding, histology, oxidative status and mitochondrial function of liver were assessed. The results showed that HFD caused fat accumulation, oxidative stress and apoptosis in hepatocytes of fish. Hepatocytes in HFD group appeared to be hypertrophied, with larger liver cells diameter than these of LFD group. Berberine-supplemented diets could attenuate oxidative stress and hepatocytes apoptosis. HFD induced the decreasing mitochondrial complexes activities and bulk density and surface area density. Berberine improved function of mitochondrial respiratory chain via increasing the complex activities. Moreover, the histological results showed that berberine has the potential to repair mitochondrial ultrastructural damage and elevate the density in cells. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that berberine has attenuated liver damage induced by the high fat mainly via the protection for mitochondria. 相似文献

An experiment was conducted in 2001 at Holetta and Kulumsa, Ethiopia, to study the extent and pattern of genetic diversity
in Ethiopian field pea (Pisum sativum L.) landraces. One hundred forty-eight germplasm accessions were grown in an alpha lattice design with 2 replications. Data
on 12 traits were collected and analyzed. Differences among the accessions were significant for most of the traits (except
number of seeds/ pod) at each location even though differences pooled over location were mostly non-significant. The accessions
were grouped into five clusters of different sizes. Accessions from the southern part of the country (Arsi) distributed overall
clusters while those from the northern half (North and South Wello, North Gonder and North Shewa) fell into clusters C1 to C3. Cumulative effects of a number of characters dictated differentiation of the accessions into clusters. There was no definite
relationship between geographic diversity and genetic diversity as overlapping was encountered in clustering pattern among
accessions from different parts of the country. Accessions from different regions might have similar genetic background and
those from the same origin might also have different genetic background. Therefore, geographic diversity should not necessarily
be used as an index of genetic diversity and parental selection should be based on a systematic study of genetic diversity
in a specific population. Genetic distances among most of the clusters were significant that crosses between parents selected
out of them are expected to generate desirable genetic recombination. Selection should also consider the special advantages
of each cluster and each accession within a cluster. Future germplasm collection, conservation and breeding efforts should
focus not only on inter-regional diversity but also on intra-regional diversity. 相似文献

The lengths of conidiophores in fungal colonies of the melon powdery mildew pathogen Podosphaera xanthii Pollacci KMP-6 N cultured under greenhouse (natural) conditions differed markedly from those cultured in a growth chamber. We hypothesized that light wavelength was responsible for the differences in conidiophore length. In this study, we examined the effects of light-emitting diode (LED) irradiation (purple, blue, green, orange, and red light) and white light on colony development and conidiophore formation in KMP-6 N using a stereomicroscope and a high-fidelity digital microscope. Colonies on leaves were flat under greenhouse conditions and under red LED light irradiation but were stacked under growth chamber conditions and under purple, blue, green, and orange LED light irradiation. In addition, KMP-6 N formed catenated conidia comprising six conidia per conidiophore under greenhouse conditions and red light but more than seven conidia per conidiophore under growth chamber conditions and purple, blue, green, and orange light. Furthermore, almost none of the conidia on top of the conidiophores grown under blue light were fully constricted. Therefore, these fungi could not scatter their conidia and spread infection. This is the first report of the effects of LED lights on conidiophore formation in the melon powdery mildew fungus P. xanthii. The results provide insight into the mechanisms underlying the responses of conidiophores to light of specific wavelengths and conidial scatter from conidiophores of melon powdery mildew fungi. 相似文献

Improper application of nitrogen (N) has led to high N losses and low N use efficiency in the lower reaches of Yangtze River in China. An effective method to solve such problems is the deep fertilized N in root zone (RZF). Limited information is available on the effect of RZF on the uptake of macronutrients (N, P and K) and rice yield. Field experiments, conducted from 2014 to 2015, compared the farmer fertilizer practice (FFP, with 225 kg ha?1 of N, split into three doses) and RZF using the same rate but placing N 5 cm away from rice roots in holes 10 cm deep (RZF10) or 5 cm deep (RZF5) as a single application. The highest mean yield (10.0 t ha?1) was obtained in RZF10, which was 19.5% more than that in FFP. Root zone fertilization of urea (whether 10 cm deep or 5 cm deep) resulted in greater accumulation of N, P and K in stem, leaf sheaths, leaf blades and grains compared to that in FFP in sandy and in loam soils. The uptake of N, P and K was the highest in RZF10 (average at 176.7, 66.2 and 179.1 kg ha?1, respectively), higher than that in FFP by 45.0, 17.0 and 22.6%, respectively. N apparent recovery efficiency was markedly higher in RZF10 (53.1%) than in FFP (27.5%). RZF10 significantly increased the N, P, K uptake compared with FFP under different N rates in both sandy and loam soils. These results suggest that the N, P and K input amount should be re-determined under RZF. 相似文献

A simultaneous estimation procedure for the parameters of two functions, i.e., the maximum size–density line and the self-thinning
curve, is presented to predict stand development for fast-growing tropical species. This procedure assumes that the rate of
periodic reduction in stand density with increasing quadratic mean diameter on a logarithmic scale (r) will increase inversely proportionally to the distance from the maximum size–density line and consequently equals the slope
of the line at distance 0. Under this assumption, the maximum size–density line can be incorporated into the self-thinning
curve to form an integrated equation with three parameters: k and m, the slope and constant of the maximum size–density line, and a, the rate of reduction of r of the self-thinning curve. These parameters are estimated simultaneously using measurement data on stand density, quadratic
mean diameter, and the corresponding r. This procedure was evaluated by application to two data sets: 186 measurements of Acacia mangium and 95 measurements of Paraserianthes falcataria, for which the parameters k and m have previously been calculated. The parameters estimated using this procedure were in good agreement with previous ones
based on the A. mangium data set, and the differences found for the P. falcataria data set were also small, within the error variances. Therefore, it is concluded that the proposed procedure would give almost
the same estimates from a single calculation step as the previous procedure that required two separate calculation steps. 相似文献
