The literature concerning the application of solid-phase extraction (SPE) to the concentration of thiram (bis(dimethyldithiocarbamoyl) disulfide) from natural waters is scarce, the available results being contradictory or with no analytical significance. To clarify these contradictory results, a C18-SPE procedure combined with HPLC-UV was applied to thiram analysis in river water, and the influence of several factors on recoveries was studied. This procedure gave thiram recoveries of about 100% when applied to thiram standard solutions. However, when the same procedure was applied to river water samples spiked with thiram, the recoveries depended on the equilibration time after spiking. The influence of river fulvic acids (FAs) and Cu(II) on thiram recoveries from standard solutions was studied as a possible interference for such a result. In the presence of FA, thiram recoveries were always higher than 85%. In the presence of Cu(II), thiram recoveries decreased significantly, due to complexation, but the addition of an excess of EDTA before C18-SPE eliminated that interference, and thiram was completely recovered. However, in river water samples the addition of EDTA had to be done before thiram spiking to obtain a recovery >90%. Thiram standard solutions containing both river FA and Cu(II) showed a behavior similar to the one observed in river water samples. On the basis of these results, the catalytic effect of Cu(II) on the degradation of thiram by FA, with formation of a Cu(II)-dimethyldithiocarbamate complex, was hypothesized.  相似文献

The use of treated industrial effluents to irrigate plants is an alternative, because of nutrients that can increase yield of the agricultural crops. This study was conducted to determine irrigation with treated effluent and gypsum application, which changes the chemical and physical characteristics of soils and the growth and nutrition of millet (Pennisetum glaucum). Thus, an experiment was conducted on PVC columns with three soil classes, Typic Hapludox, Typic Hapludult, and Arenic Hapludult. Nutrient and Na+ concentrations in the millet biomass reflected concentrations of elements in the effluent and soil. In the control, low N levels were found in the biomass, while higher leaf N concentrations were observed, due to irrigation with treated effluent. In the short term, irrigation with treated industrial effluent by controlled application could be an alternative and a complementary source of nutrients for plants, reducing the volume of nutrients and organic materials discharged into water bodies.  相似文献

Rhipicephalus sanguineus is the most widespread tick in the world, being able to survive under different climate conditions. In this study, the longevity of R. sanguineus was investigated under laboratory and natural climate conditions in southern Italy. Moreover, the reproductive fitness of females after overwintering was assessed. In the environment, unfed larvae, nymphs and adults were able to survive for up to 34, 40 and 385 days, respectively. However, the longevity of larvae (44 days), nymphs (54 days) and adults (584 days) in the laboratory was longer. Adult ticks that had overwintered under natural climate conditions were able to feed and give rise to viable larvae, after 40 weeks of starvation. Thereby, it is demonstrated that R. sanguineus is able to overwinter in southern Italy, without any prejudice to its fitness. These findings advance our knowledge on the natural history of R. sanguineus in nature and provide new insights into the epidemiology of certain tick-borne diseases in southern Europe as well as into the risk for their introduction in northern European countries.  相似文献

Context

Understanding connectivity patterns in relation to habitat fragmentation is essential to landscape management. However, connectivity is often judged from expert opinion or species occurrence patterns, with very few studies considering the actual movements of individuals. Path selection functions provide a promising tool to infer functional connectivity from animal movement data, but its practical application remains scanty.

Objectives

We aimed to describe functional connectivity patterns in a forest carnivore using path-level analysis, and to explore how connectivity is affected by land cover patterns and road networks.

Methods

We radiotracked 22 common genets in a mixed forest-agricultural landscape of southern Portugal. We developed path selection functions discriminating between observed and random paths in relation to landscape variables. These functions were used together with land cover information to map conductance surfaces.

Results

Genets moved preferentially within forest patches and close to riparian habitats. Functional connectivity declined with increasing road density, but increased with the proximity of culverts, viaducts and bridges. Functional connectivity was favoured by large forest patches, and by the presence of riparian areas providing corridors within open agricultural land. Roads reduced connectivity by dissecting forest patches, but had less effect on riparian corridors due to the presence of crossing structures.

Conclusions

Genet movements were jointly affected by the spatial distribution of suitable habitats, and the presence of a road network dissecting such habitats and creating obstacles in areas otherwise permeable to animal movement. Overall, the study showed the value of path-level analysis to assess functional connectivity patterns in human-modified landscapes.

Leishmania parasites cause a group of diseases collectively known as leishmaniases. The primary hosts of Leishmania are sylvatic mammals of several orders (Rodentia, Marsupialia, Carnivora, etc.). Under certain circumstances, particularly in peridomestic and domestic transmission foci, synanthropic and domestic animals can act as source of infection for phlebotomine sand fly vectors. Dogs have long been implicated as the main domestic reservoirs of Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum, the aetiological agent of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis, and there exists an increasing trend to regard dogs as the main domestic reservoirs of Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis, the most widespread aetiological agent of American tegumentary leishmaniasis. However, insights derived from recent research indicate that not dogs but humans are probably the most important domestic reservoirs of L. (V.) braziliensis. In the present article, the role of dogs as reservoirs of Leishmania parasites, with emphasis on L. (L.) infantum and L. (V.) braziliensis, is reviewed.  相似文献

Michigan's fisheries rely primarily upon the hatchery propagation of salmonid fish for release in public waters. One limitation on the success of these efforts is the presence of bacterial pathogens, including Aeromonas salmonicida, the causative agent of furunculosis. This study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of A. salmonicida in Michigan fish, as well as to determine whether biochemical or gene sequence variability exists among Michigan isolates. A total of 2202 wild, feral and hatchery‐propagated fish from Michigan were examined for the presence of A. salmonicida. The examined fish included Chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (Walbaum), coho salmon, O. kisutcha (Walbaum), steelhead trout, O. mykiss (Walbaum), Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis (Mitchill), and yellow perch, Perca flavescens (Mitchill). Among these, 234 fish yielded a brown pigment‐producing bacterium that was presumptively identified as A. salmonicida. Further phenotypic and phylogenetic analyses identified representative isolates as Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida and revealed some genetic and biochemical variability. Logistic regression analyses showed that infection prevalence varied according to fish species/strain, year and gender, whereby Chinook salmon and females had the highest infection prevalence. Moreover, this pathogen was found in six fish species from eight sites, demonstrating its widespread nature within Michigan.  相似文献
