Porcine circovirus 2 (PCV-2) is associated with a broad range of syndromes. In this study, eight pig tissue samples from two Brazilian states were analyzed using six PCR primer pairs amplifying a 1705-bp fragment of the PCV-2 genome. The NJ distance-based method was used for the phylogenetic analysis with the eight field strains herein, 15 GenBank sequences and using PCV-1 as an out-group. This yielded two major clusters (A and B) for this viral species, with the Brazilian strains segregating with European and Asian sequences. Nucleotide identity was 99.7 to 100% among the sequences. This information can be used in further studies of pathogenesis related to PCV-2 in Brazil. 相似文献
Probiotic bacteria increase the host health status and protect mucosal tissue against pathogen-caused damage in mammalian models. Using an in vitro (intestinal sac) method this study aimed to address (a) the in vitro ability of Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. lactis to remain in the gastrointestinal tract of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) and (b) its ability to prevent cellular damage caused by successive incubation with Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida the causative agent of furunculosis. Short in vitro incubation of salmon foregut with (TRITC)-labelled L. delbrueckii subsp. lactis showed that the probiont was able to colonize the enterocyte surface as studied by confocal microscopy. Furthermore, foregut incubated with the probiotic bacteria only, resulted in a healthy intestinal barrier whereas exposure to A. salmonicida disrupted its integrity. However, pre-treatment of salmon intestine with L. delbrueckii subsp. lactis prevented Aeromonas damaging effects. These results are promising in the context of the use of non-autochthonous probiotic bacteria as prophylactic agents against fish bacterial infections in the gastrointestinal tract. 相似文献
Free-flowing tributaries are important for the maintenance of fish diversity in dammed systems. In relation to the reproduction of fish species, the role of a free-flowing tributary was evaluated and compared with that of a dammed tributary downstream of large dams in the Madeira River, one of the main tributaries of the Amazon River.
Two hypotheses were tested: (i) the densities of the ichthyoplankton differ between the dammed and the free-flowing tributaries; and (ii) the free-flowing tributary contributes a greater diversity of fish larvae species to the assemblage structure of the main stem than the dammed tributary.
Fish eggs and larvae were sampled at five sites: one in each tributary (Jamari – dammed – and Machado – free-flowing) and three in the main stem (Madeira River), upstream and downstream from the mouth of each tributary.
Fitted Bayesian models showed that the densities both of eggs and larvae were more than twice as high in the free-flowing tributary than in the dammed tributary. The results also indicated that the free-flowing tributary makes a major contribution to the fish assemblage structure of the Madeira River, whereas the dammed tributary does not have a significant influence on the main stem assemblage structure.
The results demonstrate the importance of conservation and maintenance not only of the Machado River but also of other free-flowing tributaries in dammed basins, especially those basins with high biodiversity, such as the Amazon. Moreover, this study helps inform the decision-making process regarding the location of new dams, which is critical in fish diversity conservation.
To establish a reliable protocol for the broodstock conditioning of the oyster Ostrea edulis (Linnaeus 1758) in hatcheries is important to obtain the best number of viable larvae all year even outside the natural season for maturation and spawning. Hatchery production of bivalves depends on their initial gonadal maturation state, which is linked to season and several other factors, such as temperature, daylight, salinity and food supply. Ration and diet composition are important in broodstock conditioning because food availability affects fecundity and gametogenic development. In this work, the effect of food ration on O. edulis conditioning was studied in autumn and winter. The results of this study showed that the broodstock conditioned with a food ration of 6% and 9% produces the highest number of larvae in autumn and winter. These food rations produced rapid gonadal development and larval release in a short period with a similar larval production. The oysters conditioned with a food ration of 3% delayed larval release and produced a significantly lower number of larvae in autumn. In the 9% ration treatment, the percentages of mortality were significantly higher in both autumn and winter. Thus, a 6% food ration is likely to be the most suitable for flat oyster conditioning combined with a gradient of temperature (14–18°C) and a gradient of daylight (8–16 h). 相似文献
We model the contractual arrangements between smallholder pepper (Piper nigrum L.) producers and a single processor in Costa Rica. Producers in the El Roble settlement sell their pepper to only one processing firm, which exerts its monopsonistic bargaining power by setting the purchase price of fresh pepper. It also sets quality norms that result in the rejection of considerable amounts of the pepper produced by individual farmers. Because the firm is not able to produce its own raw pepper and requires a sufficiently stable flow of the fresh product to be processed into high quality white pepper, it usually relies on contracts with individual smallholders. Nevertheless, the latter considered collective marketing and took the initiative to propose a group contract with the firm. Such a contract increases the producers’ bargaining power vis-à-vis the processing firm and reduces rejection rates as more care is taken when transporting the pepper to be processed. Although a group contract causes the firm to lose part of its monopsonistic rents, it also reduces transaction costs as only one contract must be negotiated instead of many. Both the firm and the producers benefit, yet from the very beginning of the association, the producers breached the group contract. We have used a mixed integer linear model which, given a set of constraints, maximises the weighted sum of the expected incomes of the firm and producers. We modelled the contract chosen by the firm and the producers according to the conditions included, such as minimum income requirements and risk considerations of both processor and farmers. We calibrated the model with data from pepper producers and the firm in El Roble. The results show that at different fresh pepper prices, the contract preferred changes with the bargaining power attributed to the firm and smallholders. However, in general, it can be concluded that fresh pepper prices high enough to cover the costs, for the farmers, of a group contract lead to lower rejection rates, and thus to more pepper of an acceptable quality, increasing the incomes of both the processor and the farmers. This paper analyses thse evolution of productivity disparities across 156 European regions in the period 2000–2015. Using regional data, a battery of inequality indexes enables us to assess the extent of regional disparities. After confirming that labour productivity is the main component of income disparities, a dynamic shift-share analysis is carried out at a 10-industry level of disaggregation. The study evaluates the relative role of the three components underlying the disparities in regional productivity: changes in the industry mix, and within- and between-industry productivity gaps. The main results can be summarised as follows. First, regional disparities are on the rise again in the EU. Second, most regions are now closer to the average, while a small group of the richest regions are moving further away. Third, the main drivers of productivity disparities are within-industry differences in labour productivity with regard to the richest regions and, less importantly, the specialisation of the richest regions in more progressive industries. Finally, the net effect of structural change is still making a positive contribution to convergence with the leading regions. 相似文献
In viticulture, it is critical to predict productivity levels of the different vineyard zones to undertake appropriate cropping practices. To overcome this challenge, the final yield was predicted by combining vegetation indices (VIs) to sense the health status of the crop and by computer vision to obtain the vegetated fraction cover (Fc) as a measure of plant vigour. Multispectral imagery obtained from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is used to obtain VIs and Fc, which are used together with artificial neural networks (ANN) to model the relationship between VIs, Fc and yield. The proposed methodology was applied in a vineyard, where different irrigation and fertilisation doses were applied. The results showed that using computer vision techniques to differentiate between canopy and soil is necessary in precision viticulture to obtain accurate results. In addition, the combination of VIs (reflectance approach) and Fc (geometric approach) to predict vineyard yield results in higher accuracy (root mean square error (RMSE)?=?0.9 kg vine?1 and relative error (RE)?=?21.8% for the image when close to harvest) compared to the simple use of VIs (RMSE?=?1.2 kg vine?1 and RE?=?28.7%). The implementation of machine learning techniques resulted in much more accurate results than linear models (RMSE?=?0.5 kg vine?1 and RE?=?12.1%). More precise yield predictions were obtained when images were taken close to the harvest date, although promising results were obtained at earlier stages. Given the perennial nature of grapevines and the multiple environmental and endogenous factors determining yield, seasonal calibration for yield prediction is required.
For two consecutive years nine hybrids and three varieties of tomato, four Lycopersicon peruvianum and four Lycopersicon chilense
accessions were screened for Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) resistance. Three inoculation techniques using Bemisia
tabaci, the vector of TYLCV, were compared: (1) artificial mass inoculation-simultaneous infection of cultivated and wild
material in greenhouses; (2) artificial cage inoculation-individual infection in insect-proof cages; (3) natural field infection.
Artificial inoculations led to higher levels of infection, but different patterns of response to each inoculation technique
were found depending on the resistance level.
Tomato varieties showed an important fruit set reduction after both artificial and natural inoculations. In contrast, field
infection was milder in tomato hybrids, in which yield was barely affected. These hybrids showed a wide range of reactions
with the two artificial inoculation techniques, but infection was always more severe after mass inoculation. Extreme severity
of mass infection made it difficult to differentiate among variable degrees of resistance that were more reliably detected
with cage inoculation. The hybrids F3524, F3522, Fiona, and Tyking showed the highest level of resistance. F3524 and F3522
had an acceptable yield in field and cage assays, but their resistance collapsed under massive conditions of infection. Tyking
and Fiona exhibited the best response in all conditions, although their yield was moderately reduced in mass assays. Mass
inoculation was not adequate for the screening of wild Lycopersicon. Some susceptible plants escaped infection, probably as
a consequence of non-preference mechanisms and loss of vector infectivity. Individual inoculation in cages prevented the risk
of non-infection, ensuring 100% disease incidence. This technique allowed the selection of highly resistant wild sources.
L. chilense LA 1969 and LA 1963 had the highest level of resistance with the three inoculation techniques. L. peruvianum PI-126944
and L. chilense LA 1932, which were only tested in mass and field conditions, also exhibited a promising response.
The results proved that the inoculation technique influences the response of tomato and wild Lycopersicon spp to TYLCV. It
is concluded that artificial cage inoculation, although more time-consuming, is the most efficient, adequate, and reliable
technique to screen both cultivated and wild Lycopersicon species for resistance to TYLCV.

Perkinsusmediterraneus is a protozoan parasite that can cause marine mollusc diseases known as perkinsosis being a serious threat for clam cultures worldwide. The aim of the present study was first to determine the Perkinsus species infecting the variegated scallop Mimachlamys varia and then to evaluate the existence of oxidative stress in gills of M. varia according to different degrees of infection. DNA sequencing confirmed that P. mediterraneus was the species infecting M. varia. ROS production was progressively increasing with the degree of infection although the differences were only significant in the high-infected group. Low degree of infection significantly increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activities and nitrite levels with respect to the control group. In the high-infected group, a significant increase was evidenced in all analysed enzymes, catalase, SOD, glutathione reductase and GST. Non-significant differences in MDA levels were observed between the control and low-infected groups; however, a significant increase in MDA levels was observed in the high-infected group. In conclusion, the infection by Perkinsus mediterraneus in M. varia induces oxidative stress and an antioxidant response directly related to the infection degree that can contribute to the pathogenicity of the infection. 相似文献
