We report the molecular characterization of the amplification products obtained by specific PCR experiments aimed to identify the 5S ribosomal spacer of Setaria tundra specimens isolated from roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) in north Italy, which represent the first record of the parasite in this country. Three different fragments of approximately 400, 800, and 1200 bp (base pairs) are produced. Sequence analyses showed that all three fragments share a very high level of similarity to 5S spacer sequences of some Setaria species and other filariae present in genebank. Based on these sequences, we were able to design species-specific PCR primers for the precise identification of S. tundra. 相似文献

A 12-year-old female dog with a 3-month history of poor response to diabetes treatment had an acute worsening of symptoms, including weakness and blindness. The dog had elevated blood glucose, alkaline phosphatase and urea concentration, hyposthenuria, glycosuria, hematuria, and pyuria. Escherichia coli was isolated from the urine. Radiographs and ultrasound examination showed that the dog had unilateral emphysematous pyelitis and concurrent cystitis associated with vesicoureteral reflux. 相似文献

In Sicily, the increasing use of exotic globe artichoke germplasm is eroding the presence of autochthonous landraces, including
the long established ‘Violetto di Sicilia’. Ten clones have emerged from a clonal selection programme in this landrace, and
here we describe the variation that they capture both at the level of AFLP-based genotype and phenotypically with respect
to key productivity traits, on the basis of two seasons of field evaluation. The clonal selections yielded, on average, 8.9
heads per plant (equivalent to a fresh weight yield of 1.28 kg). Two clones yielded particularly well in both growing seasons
(10.6 heads, equivalent to 1.46 kg per plant), while another pair produced particularly large heads (on average 165 g) and
a high receptacle incidence (on average 19.3 g 100 g−1 fresh weight). Both the number of days to first harvest and the quantity of head dry matter were subject to a significant
degree of ‘clone × year’ interaction. Yield, the number of heads per plant and receptacle incidence were associated with a
moderate (0.30–0.53) broad sense heritability, indicating that these traits could be successfully improved by phenotype-based
clonal selection. AFLP fingerprinting was able to discriminate between all the clones, based on only three primer combinations.
A principal component analysis based on the AFLP fingerprints was used to compare the selected clones with a set of individuals
chosen on the basis of maximum genetic diversity. This comparison suggested that the new clone set was representative of the
genetic variation present in ‘Violetto di Sicilia’, because the diversity captured by the two sets was largely overlapping,
confirming the possibility of carrying out clonal selection in this globe artichoke landrace without compromising its preservation

Cannabinoids, the bioactive constituents of Cannabis sativa, and endocannabinoids, among which the most important are anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol, control various biological processes by binding to specific G protein-coupled receptors, namely CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors. While a vast amount of information on the mammalian endocannabinoid system does exist, few data have been reported on bony fish. In the goldfish, Carassius auratus, the CB1 receptor has been cloned and its distribution has been analyzed in the retina, brain and gonads, while CB2 had not yet been isolated. In the present paper, we cloned the goldfish CB2 receptor and show that it presents a quite high degree of amino acid identity with zebrafish Danio rerio CB2A and CB2B receptors, while the percentage of identity is lower with the puffer fish Fugu rubripes CB2, as also confirmed by the phylogenetic analysis. The sequence identity becomes much lower when comparing the goldfish and the mammalian CB2 sequences; as for other species, goldfish CB2 and CB1 amino acid sequences share moderate levels of identity. Western-blotting analysis shows the CB2 receptor as two major bands of about 53 and 40 kDa and other faint bands with apparent molecular masses around 70, 57 and 55 kDa. Since the distribution of a receptor could give information on its physiological role, we evaluated and compared CB1 and CB2 mRNA expression in different goldfish organs by means of qReal-Time PCR. Our results show that both CB1 and CB2 receptors are widely expressed in the goldfish, displaying some tissue specificities, thus opening the way for further functional studies on bony fish and other nonmammalian vertebrates. 相似文献

When an accidentally introduced pest establishes in the invaded area, native natural enemies may adapt to the new host. A decade after the accidental introduction of the brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys, in Europe, two generalist native egg parasitoids, the eupelmid Anastatus bifasciatus and the encyrtid Ooencyrtus telenomicida, have been recorded from this invasive agricultural pest in the field. Both species are able to complete development to the adult stage within the new host. Trissolcus basalis (Platygastridae = Scelionidae), which is not associated with H. halys in the field, was reared from freeze-killed sentinel eggs placed on soybean plants in central Italy. We tested in a Y-tube olfactometer the behavioural responses of these egg parasitoids to volatiles from H. halys adults and from Vicia faba plants attacked by H. halys. Both A. bifasciatus and O. telenomicida positively responded to adult H. halys male volatiles and to H. halys-induced plant volatiles, indicating ability to exploit cues associated with the new host for egg location, whereas T. basalis only reacted to female volatiles. A. bifasciatus and O. telenomicida are generalist egg parasitoids, showing a much wider host range when compared to T. basalis. On the other hand, platygastrid egg parasitoids from the native area of H. halys, considered for classical biological control, may be too risky due to the possibility of attacking non-target species, including predaceous stink bugs. Therefore, indigenous A. bifasciatus and O. telenomicida are presently under evaluation for augmentative biological control of H. halys in Europe. 相似文献

In Italy, access to the degree course in veterinary medicine is regulated each academic year by a government decree that sets the maximum student intake number for each of the 14 existing faculties. Candidates are selected by means of a multiple-choice test on the following subjects: logic and general knowledge, biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Data for the 2005/2006 academic year are presented here. Overall, 4,495 candidates took the test and 1,415 (31.5%) qualified. The questions relating to physics and mathematics were more difficult than those in other subjects (p < 0.001). Logic and general knowledge was the subject in which candidates' knowledge was best. Separate data for each of the 14 Italian faculties are presented, along with the cut-off score for admission. In addition, a "difficulty admission index" has been calculated for each faculty centre. 相似文献

Insulin resistance (IR) in dogs is suspected when hyperglycemia is present despite administration of insulin doses greater than 1.0 to 1.5 UI/kg. IR is caused by increases in counter regulatory hormones concentrations (glucagon, glucocorticoids, catecholamines and growth hormone). This study was conducted to investigate the use of aglepristone (RU 46534), a P4 receptor antagonist, for the treatment of IR diabetes mellitus in bitches during the luteal phase. All animals were treated with porcine insulin zinc suspension (Caninsulin) and aglepristone (Alizin) 10 mg/kg subcutaneously at day 1, 2, 9 and 17 from diagnosis. At day 5, no significant variation in glycemia was shown. At day 12 and 20, serum glucose concentrations were significant lower (p < 0.05). From day 12 the insulin dose was reduced to 0.8 IU BID. Insulin was reduced in the following weeks and glycemia was controlled. 相似文献
