The winding process leading to the formation of rolled-up spermatozoa in Collembola is described. It is a phenomenon common to all collembolan species examined so far and it starts with the organization of a cytoplasmic flattened evagination beneath the head of the elongated spermatid, which gives rise to an extracellular cavity. Within this cavity secretory material produced by the epithelial cells of testes is progressively stored. The spermatozoon, whose cytoplasm is reduced to a thin layer, enrolls around this material. The final appearance is that of a spheroidal or lenticular structure containing dense material in the central extracellular cavity; this cavity is surrounded by the flattened sperm in whose cytoplasm the sperm components forms several spires. The material into the extracellular cavity becomes progressively denser and has a different appearance in the species examined. 相似文献

Olive oil has been characterized by rapid proton transfer reaction-mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) headspace analysis without any concentration of the volatiles or pretreatment of the samples. Comparison of extra virgin and defective (rancid) samples, as described by a panel of sensory judges, and the monitoring of thermo-oxidation processes are discussed. Multivariate analysis of PTR-MS data has been carried out and cross-validated, providing (i) reliable classification models for extra virgin oil as opposed to defective oil and (ii) calibration models able to predict independently thermo-oxidative degradation and the corresponding peroxide value. In 1999, natural populations of Dactylis glomerata L., Festuca arundinacea Schreb., Phalaris tuberosa L. and the macrotherm species Brachypodium rupestre (Host) R. et S., were collected as seed in Southern Italy (Apulia, Basilicata and Campania regions) to evaluate the potential
as forage of native germplasm under dry conditions, using available commercial cultivars as controls. The persistence of accessions,
biometric, phenologic, productive and qualitative parameters of forage have been studied for a 3-year period (2000–2002) in
a typical Mediterranean environment. D. glomerata is widely present in the studied area with two subspecies (subsp. glomerata L., subsp. hispanica (Roth) Nyman). The research pointed out significant differences in plant size, earliness and single plant dry matter (DM)
production. All the natural ecotypes belonging to this species showed higher persistence than the control cultivars. Some
natural ecotypes appeared to have potential for improving DM yield (subsp. glomerata ecotypes) and reducing neutral detergent fibre (NDF) content (subsp. hispanica ecotypes). Natural ecotypes belonging to F. arundinacea, P. tuberosa, and B. rupestre are sporadically present in the studied area. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 2.3 billion people will be overweight and 700 million obese in 2015. The reasons for this disastrous trend are attributed to the global tendency toward the reduced magnitude of exercise and physical activity and the increased dietary intake of fats, sugars and calories with reduced amount of vitamins and minerals. To prevent life-style-related diseases, like Metabolic Syndrome (MS), researchers' attention is increasingly focusing on some of the so called "functional foods" which may be useful for their prevention and treatment. One of these functional ingredients is fucoxanthin (FX), a characteristic carotenoid present in edible brown seaweeds, such as Undaria pinnatifida (Wakame), Hijikia fusiformis (Hijiki), Laminaria japonica (Ma-Kombu) and Sargassum fulvellum. The increasing popularity of this molecule is certainly due to its anti-obesity effect, primarily detected by murine studies. These works revealed FX mediated induction of uncoupling protein-1 (UCP-1) in abdominal white adipose tissue (WAT) mitochondria, leading to the oxidation of fatty acids and heat production in WAT. Beyond this important role, in recent studies FX has shown a great antioxidant activity, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic and anti-photoaging properties. Polypodium hydriforme is a parasitic cnidarian that develops within the eggs of acipenseriform fish in the Old and New Worlds. Currently regarded as monotypic, P. hydriforme has been studied largely in the context of caviar production in Russian sturgeon species. We report the first robust epidemiological study of P. hydriforme in North American acipenseriform fish. We sampled infection prevalences (in 2017 and 2018) and intensities (in 2017) during annual surveys of American Paddlefish, Polyodon spathula, caught during spawning migration in north-eastern Oklahoma. Egg masses were characterized for the presence and intensity of P. hydriforme infection. Prevalences were similar in 2017 and 2018 (49% and 45%, respectively). Generally, a small number of eggs were infected per egg mass, but a few were heavily infected. Longer, heavier and older fish are more likely to be infected and to harbour more severe infections. In addition, infection is linked to decreases in roe fat weight independently of fish length, weight, age or roe weight. Infection thus diminishes Paddlefish energy reserves (roe fat) which could in turn impact host fitness. Our results raise questions about the impacts of infection on caviar production and Paddlefish conservation and suggest insights on infection dynamics and parasite strategies. 相似文献

- The extent and intensity of impacts of multiple new dams in the Amazon basin on specific biological groups are potentially large, but still uncertain and need to be better understood.
- It is known that river disruption and regulation by dams may affect sediment supplies, river channel migration, floodplain dynamics, and, as a major adverse consequence, are likely to decrease or even suppress ecological connectivity among populations of aquatic organisms and organisms dependent upon seasonally flooded environments.
- This article complements our previous results by assessing the relationships between dams, our Dam Environmental Vulnerability Index (DEVI), and the biotic environments threatened by the effects of dams. Because of the cartographic representation of DEVI, it is a useful tool to compare the potential hydrophysical impacts of proposed dams in the Amazon basin with the spatial distribution of biological diversity. As the impact of Amazonian dams on the biota of both rivers and periodically flooded riparian environments is severe, DEVIs from different Amazonian tributary basins are contrasted with patterns of diversity and distribution of fish, flooded forest trees and bird species.
- There is a consistent relationship between higher DEVI values and the patterns of higher species richness and endemism in all three biological groups. An assessment of vulnerability at the scale of tributary basins, the assessment of biodiversity patterns related to DEVI, and the analysis of teleconnections at basin scale, demonstrate that recent construction of dams is affecting the biota of the Amazon basin.
- The evidence presented here predicts that, if currently planned dams are built without considering the balance between energy production and environmental conservation, their cumulative effects will increase drastically and represent a major threat to Amazonian biodiversity.

Abstract This study was undertaken to determine the effect of salinity and pH on tolerance to low dissolved oxygen concentration in postlarval (PL 12; 18 mg wet weight) and early juvenile (720 mg wet weight) Peneaus setiferus . Lethal levels of dissolved oxygen were determined in animals at four combinations of salinity and pH (36 and 15 ppt salinity and pH 6 and 8). For postlarvae, the 48-h LC50 for dissolved oxygen was 1.27 mgO2 /L at 15 ppt and pH8, and was significantly lower than that obtained in the other combinations of salinity and pH (P < 0.05). For juveniles, the 72-h LC50 was 1.16 mg1L at 15 ppt and pH 8, and was significantly lower than that obtained in the other combinations of salinity and pH (P < 0.05). A significant interaction between salinity and pH was observed. These results suggest that the intensive culture of P. setiferus may be conducted at moderate salinity, where shrimp appear to be more tolerant of low concentrations of oxygen than at higher salinities. 相似文献

Foliar washoff causes a loss of copper-based pesticides sprayed on crops, leading to an increase in the number of applications and contamination of the soil with Cu. In field studies, the variables that determine the amount of Cu loss are difficult to control. An experimental setup based on a rotating shear device (RSD) was used to estimate the influence of physical factors in the loss of Cu due to washoff of three copper-based fungicides: copper oxychlorhide (CO), Bordeaux mixture (BM), and a mixture of copper oxychlorhide and propylene glycol (CO-PG). Full factorial designs were used to model the loss of Cu from fungicides sprayed on the polypropylene surface of the RSD. Variables in the experiments were rotation speed, wash water volume, and fungicide dose. Good reproducibility was obtained for Cu loss, with a coefficient of variation less than 8%. Mean Cu losses were 27.0, 33.0, and 13.5% of the copper applied in fungicide for the BM, CO, and CO-PG, respectively. Empirical equations were obtained to calculate Cu losses from the rotation speed, wash water volume, and dose, as well as their interactions. CO losses were consistent with a model of particle detachment in which such losses depended on a threshold boundary shear stress required to initiate particle motion. Also, percent CO losses were found to be significantly correlated with the linear momentum at the surface boundary. The momentum values obtained in the RSD tests were similar to those estimated for a rainfall event of 20 mm h(-1) lasting 10 min.
