pi-Conjugated polymers that are electrochemically cycled in ionic liquids have enhanced lifetimes without failure (up to 1 million cycles) and fast cycle switching speeds (100 ms). We report results for electrochemical mechanical actuators, electrochromic windows, and numeric displays made from three types of pi-conjugated polymers: polyaniline, polypyrrole, and polythiophene. Experiments were performed under ambient conditions, yet the polymers showed negligible loss in electroactivity. These performance advantages were obtained by using environmentally stable, room-temperature ionic liquids composed of 1-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium cations together with anions such as tetrafluoroborate or hexafluorophosphate.  相似文献

The World Trade Organization Agreement on the Application of Sanitary andPhytosanitary Measures (the SPS Agreement) isa product of international efforts to blendtrade liberalization with standards of publichealth protection. One of the aims of theAgreement is to facilitate the pre-emption andmanagement of food safety related tradedisputes. An examination of nineteenth-centuryand modern-day trade disputes illustrates howthe SPS Agreement is positioned to carry outthis remit. Signal transduction pathways control cellular responses to stimuli, but it is unclear how molecular information is processed as a network. We constructed a systems model of 7980 intracellular signaling events that directly links measurements to 1440 response outputs associated with apoptosis. The model accurately predicted multiple time-dependent apoptotic responses induced by a combination of the death-inducing cytokine tumor necrosis factor with the prosurvival factors epidermal growth factor and insulin. By capturing the role of unsuspected autocrine circuits activated by transforming growth factor-alpha and interleukin-1alpha, the model revealed new molecular mechanisms connecting signaling to apoptosis. The model derived two groupings of intracellular signals that constitute fundamental dimensions (molecular "basis axes") within the apoptotic signaling network. Projection along these axes captures the entire measured apoptotic network, suggesting that cell survival is determined by signaling through this canonical basis set.  相似文献

Rooting trials with softwood cuttings of several highbush blueberry varieties were carried out in 1964 and 1965. It appeared that considerably better results can be obtained with late-spring cuttings than with summer cuttings commonly used up till now.Spring cuttings should be taken shortly after flowering, when the growth of the young shootlets on one-year-old canes temporarily ceases. This optimal period for rooting occurs earlier with early and semi-early varieties than with later cropping ones.  相似文献

Thirty bi-parental progenies were generated using 45 genotypes from the University of California (UC) strawberry breeding population as parents. Both parent genotypes and their offspring were classified for photoperiod insensitivity, or day-neutrality, for flowering using a late-season flowering score and the number of inflorescences per plant recorded during late summer. Complex Segregation Analysis of these traits indicated that their distributions were best explained by a genetic model that postulates a single major locus with partial dominance for day-neutrality in combination with a background of polygenic and environmental variation. The frequency of the allele conferring day-neutrality was estimated as p = 0.59–0.62 in this experimental population. Genotypic values for the inferred major locus were estimated as a = 1.12 and d = −0.81 for the flowering score, and a = 4.93 and d = 2.41 for inflorescence number. Further resolution of inheritance patterns were obtained by comparing the phenotypic variance for each trait with estimates obtained by insertion of these genotypic class values and allele frequencies into standard quantitative genetic models, and by the comparing variance components estimated using a mixed model analysis with and without inferred genotypic classes as a fixed effect. These comparisons suggest that the major gene determines 80.5% and 73.9% of the additive genetic variance for flowering score and inflorescence number respectively. One complicating feature of the results obtained here is that a non-Mendelian model of segregation fit statistically better than a fixed Mendelian model. The genetic parameters estimated using this non-Mendelian model were essentially identical to those obtained with fixed segregation; hybrid and octoploid ancestry, selection affecting flowering response, and limited number of generations in the analysis are discussed as possible explanations of this result.  相似文献

Deep convection is the major mechanism for replenishing oxygen in the deep interior of the world ocean, and its variability affects the use of atmospheric oxygen to monitor the global carbon cycle. Sensors mounted on autonomous floats allow this episodic breathing of the ocean to be monitored in near real time. The results suggest that the tools are available now to make oxygen a key parameter in marine global change research.  相似文献

A recent dispersal of modern humans out of Africa is now widely accepted, but the routes taken across Eurasia are still disputed. We show that mitochondrial DNA variation in isolated "relict" populations in southeast Asia supports the view that there was only a single dispersal from Africa, most likely via a southern coastal route, through India and onward into southeast Asia and Australasia. There was an early offshoot, leading ultimately to the settlement of the Near East and Europe, but the main dispersal from India to Australia approximately 65,000 years ago was rapid, most likely taking only a few thousand years.  相似文献

The crystal structure of the high-affinity Escherichia coli MetNI methionine uptake transporter, a member of the adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-binding cassette (ABC) family, has been solved to 3.7 angstrom resolution. The overall architecture of MetNI reveals two copies of the adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) MetN in complex with two copies of the transmembrane domain MetI, with the transporter adopting an inward-facing conformation exhibiting widely separated nucleotide binding domains. Each MetI subunit is organized around a core of five transmembrane helices that correspond to a subset of the helices observed in the larger membrane-spanning subunits of the molybdate (ModBC) and maltose (MalFGK) ABC transporters. In addition to the conserved nucleotide binding domain of the ABC family, MetN contains a carboxyl-terminal extension with a ferredoxin-like fold previously assigned to a conserved family of regulatory ligand-binding domains. These domains separate the nucleotide binding domains and would interfere with their association required for ATP binding and hydrolysis. Methionine binds to the dimerized carboxyl-terminal domain and is shown to inhibit ATPase activity. These observations are consistent with an allosteric regulatory mechanism operating at the level of transport activity, where increased intracellular levels of the transported ligand stabilize an inward-facing, ATPase-inactive state of MetNI to inhibit further ligand translocation into the cell.  相似文献
