The goal of this research was to shed light on the trade-offs that salmon consumers make between five types of production and health attributes of farmed salmon. In Canada, the major southern Ontario market cleaved into five distinct consumer segments that varied according to age and income, ‘tastes’, and threat perceptions. There was strong consumer aversion to increased levels of PCBs, even when increased contamination levels were well within Health Canada guidelines. Both contaminant avoidance and polyunsaturated fatty acid health benefits were generally more important to consumers than improved environmental performance in salmon farming production practices. The strong consumer preferences for reduced levels of PCBs in salmon flesh suggest that there could be a substantial market premium for farmed salmon produced using reduced levels of fish meal and fish oils in salmon feed. This could, by association, increase the environmental sustainability of salmon farming.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to assess the influence of photoperiod on growth hormone (GH) secretion in rams and its possible influence on body weight. Twenty young adult rams were divided into two groups. One was subjected to an annual (AR) and the other to a semestral (SR) light regime during the same 18-month period. In both groups, daylength (DL) varied gradually between 8 to 17 hr. Plasma prolactin (PRL) and GH profiles consisting of 6 hr samples were determined and animals were weighed throughout the course of the experiment. Maximal PRL secretion was observed with largest DL. In contrast, GH secretion increased during increasing DL but it began to decrease before maximal DL was reached in both light regimes. Mean GH secretion was maximal when the DL was about 11 hr in SR and between 8 to 12 hr in AR. Similarly, body weight increased when DL increased and plateaued during decreasing DL in both AR and SR animal groups. Significant (P less than 0.05) differences were observed throughout the course of the experiment according to the effects of decreasing or increasing DL in each group. Analysis of variance showed that the effect of DL on plasma PRL and GH levels and weight velocity (WV) was significant (P less than 0.05) in both light regimes. Carbon isotope discrimination (?13C) is considered as an index of leaf-level water use efficiency, an important objective for plant breeders seeking to conserve water resources. We report in rice a genetic analysis for ?13C, leaf structural parameters, gas exchange, stomatal conductance, and leaf abscisic acid (ABA) concentrations. Doubled haploid and recombinant inbred populations, both derived from the cross IR64 × Azucena, were used for quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis following greenhouse experiments. ?13C QTLs on the long arms of chromosomes 4 and 5 were colocalized with QTLs associated with leaf blade width, length, and flatness, while a QTL cluster for ?13C, photosynthesis parameters, and ABA was observed in the near-centromeric region of chromosome 4. These results are consistent with phenotypic correlations and suggest that genetic variation in carbon assimilation and stomatal conductance contribute to the genetic variation for ?13C in this population.  相似文献

Obligate intracellular apicomplexan parasites rely on gliding motion powered by their actomyosin system to disperse throughout tissues and to penetrate host cells. Toxoplasma gondii myosin A has been implicated in this process, but direct proof has been lacking. We designed a genetic screen to generate a tetracycline-inducible transactivator system in T. gondii. The MyoA gene was disrupted in the presence of a second regulatable copy of MyoA. Conditional removal of this myosin caused severe impairment in host cell invasion and parasite spreading in cultured cells, and unambiguously established the pathogenic function of this motor in an animal model.  相似文献

As part of our search for new antimalarial drugs in South Pacific marine sponges, we have looked for inhibitors of Pfnek-1, a specific protein kinase of Plasmodium falciparum. On the basis of promising activity in a preliminary screening, the ethanolic crude extract of a new species of Pseudoceratina collected in Vanuatu was selected for further investigation. A bioassay-guided fractionation led to the isolation of a derivative of homogentisic acid [methyl (2,4-dibromo-3,6-dihydroxyphenyl)acetate, 4a] which inhibited Pfnek-1 with an IC50 around 1.8 μM. This product was moderately active in vitro against a FcB1 P. falciparum strain (IC50 = 12 μM). From the same sponge, we isolated three known compounds [11,19-dideoxyfistularin-3 (1), 11-deoxyfistularin-3 (2) and dibromo-verongiaquinol (3)] which were inactive against Pfnek-1. Synthesis and biological evaluation of some derivatives of 4a are reported.  相似文献

IFN-γ is considered as a key factor in protection against heartwater of ruminants, caused by the obligate intracellular bacterium Ehrlichia ruminantium. In this study, a better definition of the molecular masses of IFN-γ inducing proteins of the Gardel strain of E. ruminantium was obtained by the use of continuous flow electrophoresis (CFE) and sensitized polyclonal lymphocytes. Out of 15 E. ruminantium CFE fractions tested within the 14–39 kDa region, eight were commonly reacted to by all goats. Interestingly, half of these fractions fall within the 23–29 kDa region, shown previously to contain polymorphic B-cell epitopes. Thus, the results suggest that this region also contains T-cell epitopes potentially involved in protection. Also, several proteins were found to be more immunogenic than the serologically immunodominant MAP1 protein. Finally, high activity within the 15–19 kDa region was observed, which confirms previous work done with CD4+ T-cell lines obtained from cattle immunized with a South African strain of E. ruminantium. The proteins falling within the molecular weight ranges defined in this study may have potential as vaccine antigens.  相似文献

This report describes a 1-year-old cat with acute dyspnea. Thoracic radiography revealed a pneumomediastinum and severe subcutaneous emphysema. Lower airway surgical exploration was unable to determine the cause. At postmortem examination, acute necrotizing bronchopneumonia and fibrinonecrotic tracheitis due to feline herpesvirus-1 were diagnosed.  相似文献
