DISEASE SUMMARY: Cryptococcosis, principally caused by Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii, is the most common systemic mycosis of cats worldwide. Cats may be infected following inhalation of spores from the environment, with the nasal cavity suspected as being the initial site of colonization and subsequent infection. Other sites of infection in cats are the skin, lungs, lymph nodes, central nervous system (CNS), eyes and, occasionally, periarticular connective tissue. Cryptococcosis can be diagnosed using serology (antigen testing), cytologic examination of smears, histopathology or culture. Treatment of localized disease is generally successful using azole antifungal drugs; however, cats with CNS involvement or disseminated disease require additional treatment with amphotericin B, with or without flucytosine. The prognosis is variable, depending on host and pathogen factors. Some cats require long-term (>1 year) treatment or indefinite therapy. PATIENT GROUP: Cats of any breed, gender and age may be affected. Retroviral status does not appear to be a risk factor for developing cryptococcosis and indoor cats are not protected from disease. GLOBAL IMPORTANCE: Feline cryptococcosis occurs worldwide, but is most frequently reported in Australia, western Canada and the western United States. Species and molecular type vary in different geographical regions and may affect clinical presentation and antifungal susceptibility patterns. CLINICAL CHALLENGES: Serologic tests that detect cryptococcal antigen in serum are sensitive and specific, but false negatives can occur in cats with localized disease. Long-term drug therapy can be expensive and has the potential for toxicity. The extent to which the pathogenicity and antifungal susceptibility is affected by molecular type is currently under study. EVIDENCE BASE: This review draws on recent literature relating to epidemiology, CNS involvement and advanced diagnostic imaging to update clinicians regarding research findings relevant to clinical practice.  相似文献

Seeds were collected from a range of citrus rootstock types in China and sent to Australia for evaluation. Before evaluation proceeded, however, the seeds and their seedlings were characterised for uniformity and trueness-to-type. The seeds were cultured in vitro and/or germinated in sand beds to assess whether or not they were mono- or polyembryonic. Seedlings were then rogued on the basis of vigour and morphology before isozyme profiles were developed from leaf extracts to assess seedling uniformity within introductions. Isozyme profiles were also compared to those of the source trees, as well as hybrids generated between some of them in China, to assess and verify trueness-to-type. The degree of variability between the seedlings propagated from the imported seeds and their source trees in China differed between accessions, which highlighted some of the issues that need to be considered when importing citrus germplasm as seeds. Regardless of whether the seedlings could be shown to be identical to their source tree in China, three uniform seedlings of polyembryonic types were established in arboreta as Australian source trees to provide propagules for evaluation and possibly commercial use.  相似文献

Lambs infected with Ostertagia circumcincta larvae and uninfected controls were either doses with 5 g copper oxide wire particles (COWP) or remained undosed. The change in abomasal pH was monitored from duodenal digesta and that in liver copper concentration from initial liver biopsy samples and liver obtained at necropsy after 22 days. Infection increased the pH of digesta from 2.5 to 4.5. The change in liver copper content in sheep not treated with COWP was +6.1 mg (12.6 per cent) and -6.8 mg (13.8 per cent) in control and infected sheep, respectively. Significantly greater amounts of COWP were recovered from the abomasa of infected than from control animals (3.6 +/- 0.23 and 1.6 +/- 0.55 g, respectively) and hepatic uptake of copper from COWP was 0.7 and 1.8 per cent of the dose, respectively. There were significant relationships between the pH of duodenal contents and COWP retained, soluble copper concentration in duodenal digesta and hepatic uptake of copper. It was concluded that, through causing an increase in pH in abomasal and duodenal digesta, gastrointestinal nematodes interfere with copper metabolism.  相似文献

The livers from 16,776 calves 1 to 3 weeks of age slaughtered at Shepparton abattoirs were examined for gross evidence of infection with Fasciola hepatica. Those livers with thickened bile ducts were examined for the presence of liver fluke by slicing. One hundred and eight F. hepatica were collected from 84 of these livers, giving a minimum prevalence rate of prenatal infection of calves of 0.5%. These results are discussed in context with reports from other countries.  相似文献

The concentrations of pigments in the excreta, liver, depot fat and plasma of birds receiving diets containing either normal or low concentrations of pigment have been measured. The effect of the ingestion of intravenous infusion of single doses of pigment on the appearance and clearance of plasma pigment has also been investigated. The amount of pigment ingested markedly influenced its concentration in the excreta, blood and liver, had much less effect on the pigmentation of the adipose tissue and no effect on the concentration of pigments in the urine.

Ingestion of the ethyl ester of β‐apo‐8'‐carotenoic acid caused an increase in plasma pigment level within 2 h. Intravenous infusion of the pigment indicated a rapid clearance of the pigments from the plasma. Five consecutive daily infusions resulted in the appearance of the pigment in the yolk 4 d after the first infusion and the yolks continued to contain the pigment for 20 d after the infusions ceased. Only 24% of the infused pigment was recovered in the yolks.

Single oral doses of xanthophyll pigments in corn endosperm oil resulted in increases in plasma pigment concentrations 6 h after ingestion, whereas ingestion of crystalline zeaxanthin resulted in an immediate increase in plasma pigment level. Infusion of xanthophylls from both sources indicated its rapid clearance from the plasma.

The studies suggest that although the chicken has the ability to absorb xanthophyll pigments they have no function and are passively distributed amongst the tissues concerned with lipid metabolism. Their accumulation in the body or their elimination via the egg yolk are not regulated by the bird but are simple functions of the level of intake.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between a circumferential femoral head osteophyte (CFHO) and osteoarthritis characteristic of canine hip dysplasia, and to ascertain whether CFHO, like osteoarthritis, varies between diet-restricted and control-fed dogs. DESIGN: Longitudinal cohort study. ANIMALS: 48 Labrador Retrievers. PROCEDURES: Dogs were paired by size, sex, and litter and assigned to 1 of 2 equal groups at 2 months of age. The control-fed group was fed ad libitum, and the diet-restricted group was fed 25% less on a pairwise basis of the same diet for life. The dogs' hip joints were radiographed yearly for life. Each radiograph was evaluated for radiographic signs of osteoarthritis characteristic of hip dysplasia and for the presence and severity of a CFHO. RESULTS: 41 of the 48 (85.4%) dogs had a CFHO, which was detected at a median age of 5.4 years, and 33 of those 41 (80.5%) developed radiographic evidence of osteoarthritis. Nineteen (79.2%) dogs in the diet-restricted group and 22 (91.7%) in the control-fed group had a CFHO at a median age of 9 and 3 years, respectively. Of the dogs with a CFHO, 12 (63.2%) in the diet-restricted group and 20 (90.0%) in the control-fed group developed radiographic evidence of osteoarthritis characteristic of hip dysplasia at a median age of 11 and 6.5 years, respectively. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results indicated a relationship between the CFHO and subsequent development of radiographic signs of osteoarthritis. If a CFHO is present in Labrador Retrievers, it might be considered an early indicator of osteoarthritis.  相似文献

Veterinary colleges face difficulties in meeting the demand for rural veterinarians with the scope to practice quality production medicine. Increasing population density around veterinary colleges, retaining the interest of students with a background in animal agriculture, and educating students without a farm background requires that veterinary colleges consider innovative ways to not only teach traditional food-animal practice but give future veterinarians the advanced skills the food industry demands. This article describes a three-year elective program, Beef Records Analysis, in which beef production medicine is taught by teaming a student and a beef producer together early in the student's veterinary education. These producer/student teams complete risk assessments, balance rations, collect financial and production information, and evaluate back-grounding and feedlot enterprises. Students learn how to evaluate their producers using industry benchmarks and past performance records and how to communicate their findings back to their producer. Producers often make management decisions based on the students' findings, and, because the students maintain their relationships with producers for three years, they can assess the outcomes of the producers who follow or ignore their recommendations and interventions. Students share recommendations and outcomes associated with their herd with the entire class. This allows students to learn how to establish best management practices through objective analysis of outcomes of recommended practices of all herds represented in the class. While a formal assessment of the course is needed, the students rate the program very high on evaluations.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The goals of this study were to develop and apply conventional (c) and real-time TaqMan polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays for Mycoplasma haemofelis (Mhf), 'Candidatus Mycoplasma haematoparvum' (Mhp), and 'Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum' (Mhm) to blood samples of cats to determine the epidemiology of these infections in cats. HYPOTHESIS: Cats are infected with >2 hemoplasma species, and organism load correlates with disease induced by these organisms. ANIMALS: Blood samples from 263 anemic and nonanemic cats were used. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted. RESULTS: Forty-seven (18%) samples were positive. Three samples (1%) yielded 170 base pair cPCR products, 1 of which was positive for Mhf using real-time PCR. Forty-four samples (17%) yielded 193 base pair cPCR products, 40 of which were positive for Mhm using real-time PCR. Organism loads ranged from 375 X 10(6)/mL to 6.9 x 10(6)/mL of blood. Sequencing of cPCR products from samples testing negative using real-time PCR identified 2 Mhp-like sequences, 1 Mhm-like sequence, and 1 sequence resembling 'Candidatus Mycoplasma turicensis'. Cats infected with Mhm were less likely to be anemic than uninfected cats. Older age, outdoor exposure, feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) seropositivity, cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and stomatitis were associated with Mhm infection. Cats from the Sacramento Valley were more often infected with Mhm than cats from the San Francisco bay area. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Cats may be infected with 4 hemoplasma species. The association between Mhm infection, FIV, and SCC may reflect outdoor roaming status of infected cats. The clustered distribution of infection suggests an arthropod vector in transmission.  相似文献

This article describes amebic infections in 4 horses: granulomatous amebic encephalitis caused by Balamuthia mandrillaris and Acanthamoeba culbertsoni and systemic infections caused by Acanthamoeba sp. The former infection occurred in 1 of 4 horses spontaneously without any underlying conditions; the latter amebic infection was perhaps "opportunistic" considering the visceral involvement by this protozoan in association with Aspergillus sp. and/or Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas sp. The clinicopathologic findings and demonstration of the amebic organisms using immunohistochemical techniques, culture, polymerase chain reactions, and electron microscopy are presented.  相似文献
