Termite activities are known to significantly influence small-scale soil properties in tropical savannas. The lateral and vertical extent of the alterations to the nest's surrounding, and particularly resulting impacts on diagnostic soil horizons remain largely unresolved until today. We examined the effects of mound-building termites on soil genesis and constitutive chemical soil properties in and below their nests. Two transects to a soil depth of 100 cm were dug below three younger mounds of Cornitermes silvestrii (the primary nest builder), three older mounds in which C. silvestrii had died out and which were secondarily colonized mainly by Nasutitermes kemneri, and three reference sites in the Brazilian Cerrado. The samples were characterized by standard procedures for soil classification; in addition, phosphorus extractions were conducted on selected samples using NaHCO3 for labile P forms, and concentrated HCl for stable P forms. This data set was then used to build calibration models for the prediction of labile and stable inorganic (Pi) and organic (Po) P forms, as well as for contents of organic carbon (OC), for the remaining samples applying mid-infrared spectroscopy in combination with partial least squares regression (MIRS-PLSR). We can show that the termite influence on the soil was sufficiently large to change diagnostic characteristics of the soils under termite mounds. The MIRS-PLSR predictions were suitable for quantifying organic carbon and most of the labile and stable phosphorus fractions. They showed an enrichment of OC, NaHCO3-Po and NaHCO3-Pi contents in nests inhabited by primary and secondary termites by factors of 1.6–2.0 and 1.4–1.5, respectively. The soils surrounding the nests had higher contents of OC and NaHCO3-P under both nest types vertically down to 30 cm below the lower nest border, and OC and NaHCO3-Pi contents were elevated at minimum to a lateral distance of 60 cm away from the nest border. As the pattern of HClconc-Pi, which comprised 95% of total P, showed no variations, we conclude that the higher NaHCO3-Pi amount was formed in termite nests by changing the availability of the more stable HClconc-Pi. In contrast to the contents, the OC and NaHCO3-P stocks below the mounds inhabited by primary termites were comparable to those inhabited by secondary ones, because the bulk density of the secondarily inhabited nests was elevated. This was due to a transport of clay-rich material from the subsurface argic horizons into the nests. Here, the secondary termites even reverted the lessivation observed in the reference soils and under mounds inhabited by primary termites, thus causing the soil types to change from Alisols and Acrisols to the properties of Umbrisols.  相似文献

Purpose

Many drainage basins are terminal recipients of hydrophobic contaminants such as pesticides. To minimize adverse effects of the contaminated sediments on wildlife, it is important to understand sediment contamination patterns. This study was conducted at the Salton Sea, which is a heavily polluted large lake in southern California, USA, with the purpose to identify areas with minimal contamination so as to support species conservation.

Materials and methods

We investigated the horizontal and vertical distribution of 14 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and 12 currently used pesticides (CUPs) in playas at locations near the drainage outfalls. The data were subjected to spatial analysis using Kriging interpolation and converted to contour maps. Statistical comparisons were made among different areas, between different sediment depths, and between air-exposed and submerged sediments.

Results and discussion

Various OCPs were found near two drainage inlets, with mean concentrations of 6?C30???g?kg?1 in air-exposed sediments and 3?C18???g?kg?1 in submerged sediments. Chlordane (detected frequency, DF?=?77?%) and DDT derivatives (DF?=?100?%) were among the most frequently detected OCP. Significantly higher concentrations were found in air-exposed sediments than in submerged sediments, and in subsurface sediments than in surface sediments (P?<?0.01), suggesting historical deposition and burial. Sediments at many locations exceeded the threshold levels for DDE. A total of seven CUPs were detected with the maximum ??CUPs concentration of up to 27???g?kg?1. Bifenthrin was the dominant CUP contaminant, representing more than 60?% of ??CUPs for most samples with the highest concentration of 26???g?kg?1.

Conclusions

Findings from this study provide a snapshot of the spatial distribution in both horizontal and vertical directions of hydrophobic pesticides in a drainage-dominated lake, and such information and the method of investigation may be used for identifying areas of minimal contamination as alternative habitats for this and other impacted lakes.  相似文献

Accurate quantification of the rate of groundwater (GW) recharge, a pre-requisite for the sustainable management of GW resources, needs to capture complex processes, such as the upward flow of water under shallow GW conditions, which are often disregarded when estimating recharge at a larger scale. This paper provides (1) a method to determine GW recharge at the field level, (2) a consequent procedure for up-scaling these findings from field to irrigation scheme level and (3) an assessment of the impacts of improved irrigation efficiency on the rate of GW recharge. The study is based on field data from the 2007 growing season in a Water Users Association (WUA Shomakhulum) in Khorezm district of Uzbekistan, Central Asia, an arid region that is characterized by a predominance of cotton, wheat and rice under irrigation. Previous qualitative studies in the region reported irrigation water supplies far above the crop water requirements, which cause GW recharge. A field water balance model was adapted to the local irrigation scheme; recharge was considered to be a fraction of the irrigation water losses, determined as the difference between net and gross irrigation requirements. Capillary rise contribution from shallow GW levels was determined with the HYDRUS-1D model. Six hydrological response units (HRUs) were created based on GW levels and soil texture using GIS and remote sensing techniques. Recharge calculated at the field level was up-scaled first to these HRUs and then to the whole WUA. To quantify the impact of improved irrigation efficiency on recharge rates, four improved irrigation efficiency scenarios were developed. The area under cotton had the second highest recharge (895 mm) in the peak irrigation period, after rice with 2,514 mm. But with a low area share of rice in the WUA of <1 %, rice impacted the total recharge only marginally. Due to the higher recharge rates of cotton, which is grown on about 40 % of the cropped area, HRUs with a higher share of cotton showed higher recharge (9.6 mm day?1 during August) than those with a lower share of cotton (4.4 mm day?1). The high recharge rates in the cotton fields were caused by its water requirements and the special treatment given to this crop by water management planners due to its strategic importance in the country. The scenario simulations showed that seasonal recharge under improved irrigation efficiency could potentially be reduced from 4 mm day?1 (business-as-usual scenario) to 1.4 mm day?1 (scenario with maximum achievable efficiency). The combination of field-level modeling/monitoring and GIS approaches improved recharge estimates because spatial variability was accounted for, which can assist water managers to assess the impact of improved irrigation efficiencies on groundwater recharge. This impact assessment enables managers to identify options for a recharge policy, which is an important component of integrated management of surface and groundwater resources.  相似文献

Although insecticide resistance is a widespread problem for most insect pests, frequently the assessment of resistance occurs over a limited geographic range. Herein, we report the first widespread survey of insecticide resistance in the USA ever undertaken for the house fly, Musca domestica, a major pest in animal production facilities. The levels of resistance to six different insecticides were determined (using discriminating concentration bioassays) in 10 collections of house flies from dairies in nine different states. In addition, the frequencies of Vssc and CYP6D1 alleles that confer resistance to pyrethroid insecticides were determined for each fly population. Levels of resistance to the six insecticides varied among states and insecticides. Resistance to permethrin was highest overall and most consistent across the states. Resistance to methomyl was relatively consistent, with 65–91% survival in nine of the ten collections. In contrast, resistance to cyfluthrin and pyrethrins + piperonyl butoxide varied considerably (2.9–76% survival). Resistance to imidacloprid was overall modest and showed no signs of increasing relative to collections made in 2004, despite increasing use of this insecticide. The frequency of Vssc alleles that confer pyrethroid resistance was variable between locations. The highest frequencies of kdr, kdr-his and super-kdr were found in Minnesota, North Carolina and Kansas, respectively. In contrast, the New Mexico population had the highest frequency (0.67) of the susceptible allele. The implications of these results to resistance management and to the understanding of the evolution of insecticide resistance are discussed.  相似文献

The effect of two rice endosperm proteins, glutelin and globulin, on the physicochemical properties of rice starch and flour was investigated. Albumin, globulin, prolamin and glutelin were sequentially extracted from defatted rice flour with de-ionised water, 1.5 M NaCl, propan-2-ol and 0.1 M NaOH, respectively, followed by dialysis and lyophilisation. Globulin and glutelin were then added to pure rice starch at various concentrations, separately and together, and the pasting and textural properties of mixtures were analysed by the Rapid Visco Analyser (RVA) and TA-XT2 textural analyser, respectively. The presence of glutelin in rice starch caused an increase in pasting temperature but a decrease in the viscosity parameters of the starch paste. The concentration of glutelin was also positively correlated with the hardness and adhesive properties of the starch gel. The presence of globulin, on the other hand, resulted in a decrease in all the pasting and textural parameters except gel hardness and the changes were linearly correlated with the concentration of the protein for most of the physical parameters. When the two proteins were added to rice starch together, the outcomes in pasting and textural properties were generally dependent upon the relative concentrations of the two proteins, but were also influenced by the presence of the other two protein fractions, albumin and prolamin. The presence of globulin initially accelerated the rate of water absorption by starch during cooking while the presence of glutelin slowed it down, but in both cases, the ultimate amount of water absorbed was significantly lower than that by pure starch. The contrasting effects of the different protein fractions mean that it might be possible to manipulate the textural properties of rice starch and flour to achieve desirable sensory outcomes by varying the proportions of the protein fractions in product formulations.  相似文献

Background

Many previous studies have documented seasonal variation in suicides globally. We re-assessed the seasonal variation of suicides in Finland and tried to relate it to the seasonal variation in daylength and ambient temperature and in the discrepancy between local time and solar time.

Methods

The daily data of all suicides from 1969 to 2003 in Finland (N = 43,393) were available. The calendar year was divided into twelve periods according to the length of daylight and the routinely changing time difference between sun time and official time. The daily mean of suicide mortality was calculated for each of these periods and the 95% confidence intervals of the daily means were used to evaluate the statistical significance of the means. In addition, daily changes in sunshine hours and mean temperature were compared to the daily means of suicide mortality in two locations during these afore mentioned periods.

Results

A significant peak of the daily mean value of suicide mortality occurred in Finland between May 15th and July 25th, a period that lies symmetrically around the solstice. Concerning the suicide mortality among men in the northern location (Oulu), the peak was postponed as compared with the southern location (Helsinki). The daily variation in temperature or in sunshine did not have significant association with suicide mortality in these two locations.

Conclusions

The period with the longest length of the day associated with the increased suicide mortality. Furthermore, since the peak of suicide mortality seems to manifest later during the year in the north, some other physical or biological signals, besides the variation in daylight, may be involved. In order to have novel means for suicide prevention, the assessment of susceptibility to the circadian misalignment might help.  相似文献

Robotic or automatic milking systems (AMS) are novel technologies that take over the labor of dairy farming and reduce the need for human–animal interactions. Because robotic milking involves the replacement of ‘conventional’ twice-a-day milking managed by people with a system that supposedly allows cows the freedom to be milked automatically whenever they choose, some claim robotic milking has health and welfare benefits for cows, increases productivity, and has lifestyle advantages for dairy farmers. This paper examines how established ethical relations on dairy farms are unsettled by the intervention of a radically different technology such as AMS. The renegotiation of ethical relationships is thus an important dimension of how the actors involved are re-assembled around a new technology. The paper draws on in-depth research on UK dairy farms comparing those using conventional milking technologies with those using AMS. We explore the situated ethical relations that are negotiated in practice, focusing on the contingent and complex nature of human–animal–technology interactions. We show that ethical relations are situated and emergent, and that as the identities, roles, and subjectivities of humans and animals are unsettled through the intervention of a new technology, the ethical relations also shift.  相似文献

A methodology to assess performance of pressurized irrigation distribution networks is presented, which is based on generation of flow configurations from simulated delivery scenarios, and on subsequent analysis of network operation and delivery achievements. The rationale of the methodology entails simulating the peak-demand flow configurations in the pipe network through a deterministic–stochastic combined agro-hydrological model, and forecasting the delivery performance by means of a hydraulic simulation model and of some specific performance indicators. The agro-hydrological model generates disaggregated information on soil water deficits for all the cropped fields downstream from the delivery hydrants, and forecasts the demand flow hydrographs and irrigation deliveries for the entire service area during peak-demand periods. The simulated-demand flow configurations are then passed on to the hydraulic simulation model, which evaluates the hydraulic performance achievable by the pipe network. The performance analysis is then refined using additional indicators specifically adapted to pressurized irrigation networks. The proposed methodology was applied to a large-scale pressurized irrigation system of southern Italy that is in need of modernization. Results proved the usefulness of the combined use of simulation tools as components of an analytical framework to address modernization and re-engineering of existing irrigation delivery networks, on the basis of targeted delivery performance.  相似文献

African swine fever (ASF) is an acute, highly contagious and deadly viral hemorrhagic fever of domestic pigs caused by African swine fever virus (ASFV), a double-stranded DNA virus of the family Asfarviridae. In this study, molecular diagnosis and characterization of outbreak ASFV in northern Tanzania, was performed on spleen, lymph node, kidney, and heart samples collected in June and July 2013 from domestic pigs that died during a hemorrhagic disease outbreak. Confirmatory diagnosis of ASF was performed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) by partial amplification of B646L gene of ASFV encoding the major capsid protein p72 using PPA1/PPA2 primers. PCR using PPA1/PPA2 primers produced an expected PCR product size, confirming ASF outbreak in northern Tanzania. In addition, nucleotide amplification and sequencing, and phylogenetic reconstruction of the variable 3′-end of the B646L gene and complete E183L gene encoding the inner envelope transmembrane protein p54 showed that the 2013 outbreak ASFV from northern Tanzania were 100 % identical and clustered into ASFV B646L (p72) and E183L (p54) genotype X. Furthermore, the tetrameric amino acid repeats within the central variable region (CVR) of the B602L gene coding for the J9L protein had the signature BNBA(BN)5NA with a single novel tetramer NVDI (repeat code N). The results of the present study confirm an ASF outbreak in northern Tanzania in the year 2013 and show that the present outbreak ASFV is closely related to other ASFV from ticks, warthogs, and domestic pigs previously reported from Tanzania.  相似文献
