This paper explores whether spatial variation in the biodiversity values of vertebrates and plants (species richness, range-size rarity and number or proportion of IUCN Red Listed threatened species) of three African tropical mountain ranges (Eastern Arc, Albertine Rift and Cameroon-Nigeria mountains within the Biafran Forests and Highlands) co-vary with proxy measures of threat (human population density and human infrastructure). We find that species richness, range-size rarity, and threatened species scores are all significantly higher in these three tropical African mountain ranges than across the rest of sub-Saharan Africa. When compared with the rest of sub-Saharan Africa, human population density is only significantly higher in the Albertine Rift mountains, whereas human infrastructure is only significantly higher in the Albertine Rift and the Cameroon-Nigeria mountains. Statistically there are strong positive correlations between human density and species richness, endemism and density or proportion of threatened species across the three tropical African mountain ranges, and all of sub-Saharan Africa. Kendall partial rank-order correlation shows that across the African tropical mountains human population density, but not human infrastructure, best correlates with biodiversity values. This is not the case across all of sub-Saharan Africa where human density and human infrastructure both correlate almost equally well with biodiversity values. The primary conservation challenge in the African tropical mountains is a fairly dense and poor rural population that is reliant on farming for their livelihood. Conservation strategies have to address agricultural production and expansion, in some cases across the boundaries and into existing reserves. Strategies also have to maintain, or finalise, an adequate protected area network. Such strategies cannot be implemented in conflict with the local population, but have to find ways to provide benefits to the people living adjacent to the remaining forested areas, in return for their assistance in conserving the forest habitats, their biodiversity, and their ecosystem functions.  相似文献

Avoiding chemical and physical artifacts during sampling is crucial for realistic analyses of mineral and other colloids in soil. We developed a sampler, which allows for the in situ collection of Fe oxides that precipitate in their natural environment in a Bg horizon of a Calcaric Gleysol. Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis is considered as one of the most serious problems affecting the world’s ruminant industry due to its significant impact on the global economy and the controversial issue that it may be pathogenic for humans. M. avium subspecies paratuberculosis is the causative agent of Johne’s disease in animals and might be implicated in cases of human Crohn’s disease. The optimal response time of plasma urea nitrogen (PUN) was investigated in slaughter pigs fed diets based on barley, wheat or casein as protein sources. Four blood samples were collected during the day from a catheter in the jugular vein: one sample was collected 0.5 h before morning feeding while the other three samples were collected 2, 4 and 6 h after the morning feeding. The effect from previously fed diets on the specific response from the test diet was investigated. However, only the diet fed on the previous day was found to influence the values of PUN before the morning feeding. The reported experiments included nine different diets fed to six pigs in six different feeding designs, all requiring 1 or 2 days for investigating the test diet. The diet used in the morning feeding also significantly influenced the concentration of PUN during the following 6 h. In general, a good agreement was found between the calculated biological value (BV) of the diet and the response of PUN. It was concluded that analysis of PUN can be used as a rapid response parameter for testing the protein quality of the diet and, consequently, this analysis may also be used as a rapid method for determining amino acid requirements in pigs.  相似文献

Multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are a promising therapeutic tool for the treatment of equine tendon and other musculoskeletal injuries. While bone marrow is considered the ‘gold standard’ source of these cells, various other tissues contain MSCs with potentially useful features. The aim of this study was to compare clinically relevant characteristics of MSCs derived from bone marrow, umbilical cord blood and tissue and from adipose tissue and tendon. Cell yield, proliferation, migration, tendon marker expression and differentiation into adipocytes, chondrocytes and osteoblasts was assessed, quantified and compared.MSC numbers obtained from adipose, tendon or umbilical cord tissues were 222-fold higher than those obtained from bone marrow or cord blood. Cells derived from tendon and adipose tissues exhibited most rapid proliferation. Osteogenic differentiation was most prominent in MSCs derived from bone marrow, and was weak in MSCs derived from umbilical cord blood and tissue. In contrast, the highest levels of chondrogenic differentiation were observed in MSCs derived from these sources. Collagen 1A2 expression was highest in adipose- and tendon-derived MSCs, while scleraxis expression was highest in cord blood- and in tendon-derived MSCs. The findings indicate that MSCs from different sources display significantly diverse properties that may impact on their therapeutic application.  相似文献

Acetylation is known to enhance the resistance of wood to brown rot fungi. As initial decay by some brown rot fungi is assumed to be caused by the Fenton reaction, pine micro-veneers acetylated to various weight percent gains (WPG) were exposed in a solution containing iron ions and hydrogen peroxide, i.e., Fenton’s reagent. Mass loss and tensile strength loss as well as the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide within the incubation time decreased with increasing WPG of the veneers. Incubation of untreated and acetylated veneers in acetate buffer containing ferric ions without H2O2 revealed that the modification strongly reduced the uptake of Fe ions by the wood cell wall. FT-IR analysis indicated oxidation of the unmodified control veneers but did not show predominant decay of specific cell wall components. Spectra of acetylated veneers did not reveal any significant changes induced by Fenton’s reagent. It was concluded that one possible reason for the enhanced resistance of acetylated wood to the Fenton reaction could be the reduced or almost completely prevented uptake of Fe ions by the wood cell wall.  相似文献

Growing cereals (especially rye), which are incorporated into the soil to increase soil fertility or organic matter content, is a common practice in crop rotation. The additional sanitizing effect of this incorporation has often been appreciated and is said to be due to leaching of benzoxazinones and subsequent formation of benzoxazolinones. In this study wheat (Stakado) and rye (Hacada) sprouts were incorporated into soil in amounts that simulated agricultural practice. By extraction and subsequent LC-MS analysis the disappearance and appearance of benzoxazinones, benzoxazolinones, and phenoxazinones in soil were followed. In the wheat experiments 6-methoxybenzoxazolin-2-one (MBOA) was detected as the main compound. 2-Hydroxy-7-methoxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one (HMBOA) and 2-hydroxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one (HBOA) were detected as well. No phenoxazinones were detected. For the rye experiment the picture was more complex. In the first 2 days of incubation MBOA and 2,4-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one (DIBOA) were detected as the main allelochemicals along with HBOA, HMBOA, and benzoxazolin-2-one (BOA), in decreasing order. Later in the incubation period some 2-amino-3H-phenoxazin-3-one (APO) was detected and the amount of HBOA increased considerably and decreased again. The profiling of the benzoxazinone metabolites and their derivates in soil was dynamic and time-dependent. The highest concentrations of most of the compounds were seen at day 1 after incorporation. A maximum concentration was reached at day 4 for a few of the compounds. This study is the first of its kind that shows the dynamic pattern of biologically active benzoxazinone derivates in soil after incorporation of wheat and rye sprouts. Methods for organic synthesis of HBOA and HMBOA were developed as part of the study.  相似文献

Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) sapwood was treated with quat-silicone micro-emulsion (<40?nm), amino-silicone macro-emulsion (110?nm), alkyl-modified silicone macro-emulsion (740?nm) and solutions of inorganic water glass. Three treatment concentrations of 5, 15 and 30% (w/w) were used for the impregnation of the test specimens. Termite resistance was assessed following a 16-week field trial conducted in northern Queensland, Australia. Two different field sites were chosen for exposure to feeding by Coptotermes acinaciformis (Froggatt) and Mastotermes darwiniensis (Froggatt). Following exposure, the test and feeder specimens were inspected and assessed for termite damage using a visual rating system (from 10 sound to 0 completely destroyed) and individual mass losses. The specimens treated with quat- and amino-silicone emulsions resisted damage by both termite species, even at less than 15% weight percent gains (WPGs). Alkyl-modified silicone macro-emulsion and water glass treatment induced somewhat less resistance to termite damage, but imparted protection at higher WPGs.  相似文献

Although inclusion in formal value chains extends the prospect of improving the livelihoods of rural small-scale producers, such a step is often contingent on compliance with internationally-promoted food safety standards. Limited research has addressed the challenges this represents for small rural producers who, grounded in culturally-embedded food safety conceptions, face difficulties in complying. We address this gap here through a multiple case study involving four public school feeding programs that source meals from local rural providers in the Bolivian Altiplan. Institutional logics theory is used to describe public food safety regulations and to compare them to food safety conceptions in the local indigenous Aymara rural setting. We identify a value-based conflict that leads to non-compliance of formal food safety rules that jeopardizes the participation of small farmers in the market. These include: (1) partial adoption of formal rules; (2) selective adoption of convenient rules; and (3) ceremonial adoption to avoid compliance. Decoupling strategies allow local actors to largely disregard the formal food safety regulations while accommodating traditional cultural practices and continuing to access the market. However, these practices put the long-term sustainability of the farmers’ participation in potentially favorable opportunities at risk.  相似文献
