In this study, the antibacterial and hemolytic effects of the gonadal tissue, test, spines and Aristotle’s lantern of the sea urchin (Echinometra mathaei) were investigated. The aerobic Gram-positive pathogenic bacteria Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus were selected because of their importance in oral diseases. The samples of sea urchin were collected from an intertidal zone in the Persian Gulf and then dissected. Finally, the crude extracts of the gonadal tissue, test, spines and Aristotle’s lantern of the samples were separately prepared by the solvents, including phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), 96 % ethanol (Et) and 80 % acetonitrile (ACN). The antibacterial activities of the extracts were evaluated using the well diffusion method in two concentrations of 1500 and 600 µg well?1. The antibacterial effects against streptococcal species were observed in the organic extracts (Et and ACN) of the gonads and test while the extracts of spines and Aristotle’s lantern showed no antibacterial activity. The hemolytic activity of the PBS, 96 % Et, and 80 % ACN extracts from the sea urchin were evaluated using horse red blood cells. Hemolytic activity was observed only in the 80 % Et and ACN extracts of the gonad and test. In conclusion, the organic extracts of gonadal tissue showed the most inhibitory activity on the growth of S. mutans and S. sobrinus.  相似文献

To evaluate the effects of different level of Na salinity (0, 3, 6 and 9 dS m(-1)) on growth, yield and yield component of Kabuli (Hashem and Jam) and Desi (Kaka and Pirooz) chickpea cultivars a factorial experiment based on randomized complete block design with four replications was carried out in Research Greenhouse of Mokrian Agricultural Extension Center near Mahabad, Iran at 2006. Seeds of four chickpea cultivars were grown under 0, 3, 6 and 9 dS m(-1) levels of salinity until maturity. Salinity reduced the plant growth, flower, pod and seed number and seed weight. As increase in salinity, the undesirable effect of Na+ was more pronounced and reached the highest value at 9 dS m(-1) in all cultivars. Four chickpea cultivar have different responses to salinity and the Kabuli cultivars seemed to have a greater capacity for salt tolerance compared to Desi cultivars. Hahshem cultivar has the highest salinity tolerance among all cultivars.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Meat products, such as fish meat, are known to be susceptible to undesirable chemical and microbial reactions that characterize spoilage. In this study, the effect of a sodium alginate and chitosan coating incorporated with Mentha piperita, Artemisia dracunculus, and Zataria multiflora essential oils on chemical and microbial attributes of rainbow trout meat was evaluated during storage at 4°C. Chemical and microbial assays were performed on rainbow trout fillets with alginate and chitosan coatings and 0.2% concentration of test essential oils. The results showed that the alginate coating with essential oils significantly decreased production of thiobarbituric acid (TBA) and total volatile basic nitrogen (TVBN) and reduced the growth of foodborne spoilage bacteria during storage at 4ºC. At day 12, the best results were obtained in chitosan coating + Z. multiflora, with 5.96 ± 0.12, 4.93 ± 0.12, and 3.83 ± 0.2 for total viable counts, psychrotrophic bacterial count, and lactic acid bacteria count, respectively. Moreover, the lowest amounts of chemical analysis were observed in chitosan coating + Z. multiflora at the final day (0.54 ± 0.03 and 20.31 ± 0.1 for TBA and TVBN, respectively). Our study revealed that essential oils can be used as effective natural components against undesirable chemical and microbial reactions in fish meat.  相似文献

Lysozyme levels in the head kidney, spleen and liver tissues of the male and female Caspian kutum (Rutilus frisii kutum) were measured under monthly temperature variations and gonadal growth. The lysozyme content in all tissues of the male and female of the Caspian kutum showed almost a significant decreasing trend from October to March, coinciding with the lowest sea surface temperature and afterwards, it increased in April and May. In vitellogenic stage of the ovarian growth, the lysozyme level decreased in all three tissues and then increased significantly in the spawning stage. Over testicular growth, lysozyme level showed no remarkable variations from the early maturing to developed stages but increased in the spermiation stage. The regularity of lysozyme level in both sexes of the Caspian kutum was liver>spleen>head kidney. The effectiveness ratio (partial Eta2) of temperature and gonadal growth in the lysozyme variations showed that temperature factor was more highlight than gonadal growth. In conclusion, the liver similar to the kidney and spleen plays an essential role against pathogen as an organ of lysozyme producing in the Caspian kutum. In addition, the female lysozyme level was higher than the male in all studied tissues.  相似文献

Effect of different levels (0%, 0.15%, 0.25%, 0.35% and 0.50%) of Optimûn, a commercial nucleotide (NT) product, on the growth performance, body composition and fatty acid profile of juvenile Beluga sturgeon (Huso huso) (12.57 ± 0.5 g) was investigated over a 62‐day period. This experiment was done in fifteen 600 L tanks, each stocked with 30 fish. Fish fed nucleotide showed significantly better growth performance (< 0.05). Incorporation of 0.25% and 0.35% NT resulted in whole body protein content elevation, but the other proximate composition indices were not influenced by dietary nucleotide treatments. There were significant differences in saturated fatty acids (SFA) and total unsaturated fatty acids (TUFA) levels among fish fed on different experimental diets, while monounsaturated fatty acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), n‐3 PUFA, n‐6 PUFA, n3/n6 and eicosapentaenoic acid + docosahexaenoic acid were not influenced by NT. The results showed that diet supplementation with 0.35% Optimûn (NT) enhance growth performance, also administration of 0.25% and 0.35% affected chemical composition, as well as decreased SFA/TUFA ratio of Beluga juvenile.  相似文献

Common carp were fasted for 0, 3 and 14 days prior to exposure to a 2‐hr crowding stress. Serum cortisol, glucose, lactate, T4, T3, serum alternative complement (ACH50), lysozyme, total immunoglobulin (Ig) and blood WBC were determined before and 0, 6 and 24 hr after the crowding stress. Three days of fasting led to a significant decrease in serum levels of lactate and thyroid hormones. Fourteen days of fasting led to initiation of physiological process to maintain serum glucose by increase in serum cortisol level and lactate utilization. These fish had lower levels of thyroid hormones suggesting suppression of basal metabolism. The fish also had lower WBC and serum lysozyme and total Ig levels indicating immunosuppression. After the crowding stress, the fish fasted for 3 days had significantly lower lactate, thyroid hormones and total Ig levels. The fish fasted for 14 days had higher cortisol but lower glucose and thyroid hormones levels suggesting impairment in metabolic responses to the crowding stress. Immunological and health indicators including WBC, and ACH50, lysozyme and total Ig of these fish were significantly lower than the other groups after the crowding stress. Overall, the results show that a 14‐day fasting leads to stress responses, reduction in metabolism and immunosuppression. Moreover, 14 days of fasting lead to greater cortisol response to a further crowding stress, which induces marked immunosuppression and fallen welfare.  相似文献

Temperature is considered as an important environmental factor, and the increasing water temperature resulting from global warming is a great concern. The present study was conducted to examine the effects of elevated water temperature on growth, hemato‐biochemical parameters in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus acclimatized to three temperatures (31°C, 34°C and 37°C) for 60 days. Additionally, erythrocytic cellular abnormalities (ECA) and erythrocytic nuclear abnormalities (ENA) tests were assayed using peripheral erythrocytes after exposure to the three temperatures. Fish were sacrificed on days 7, 15, 30 and 60 of exposure. Growth performances viz., weight gain, % weight gain and specific growth rate (SGR) showed decreasing tendency at 34°C but significantly declined at 37°C compared to 31°C. The abundance of haemoglobin (Hb) and red blood cells (RBCs) significantly decreased in response to temperature increases, while white blood cells (WBCs) displayed the opposite response. At days 7 and 15, blood glucose levels significantly increased in response to the temperature increase, while at days 30 and 60 glucose declined. Frequencies of ECA and ENA were significantly enhanced at the highest temperature throughout the experimental period. Dissolved oxygen decreased and free CO2 increased significantly with increasing temperature throughout the study period. The present study revealed that temperatures higher than 34°C may be hazardous to O. niloticus.  相似文献

A pot culture experiment was performed to study the effect of cadmium stress (Cd stress) on seedling growth, physiological traits, and remediation potency of Avena fatua, Lathyrus sativus, and Lolium temulentum. The seedlings of these native rangeland plant species were treated with 0, 2, 4, and 6 mM cadmium nitrate concentrations. Based on the results of analysis of variance (p < 0.05), the shoot height, shoot dry weight, root length, root dry weight, root: shoot ratio, total chlorophyll content, soluble sugars, and protein contentof A. fatua, L. sativus, and L. temulentum significantly decreased with increased cadmium concentrations. Generally, translocation factor (TF) and tolerance index (TI) decreased significantly as the concentration of cadmium increased. The maximum TF and TI of studied plants in various concentrations of Cd were observed in L. temulentum followed by L. sativus and A. fatua. The root concentration factor (RCF) values of all studied plants were higher than 1 under different cadmium concentrations. Our results indicate that Lolium temulentum could be labeled as an accumulator of Cd asthe values of TF and RCF are greater than 1. A. fatua and L. sativus showed a potential to be used in the phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated soils.  相似文献
