Factors affecting cross protection of fusarium wilt of pigeon pea by soilborne nonpathogenic fungi

Preinoculation of pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.) seedlings with soilborne fungi nonpathogenic to pigeon pea, namely,Fusarium oxysporum f.sp.niveum; F. oxysporum f.sp.ciceris; F. solani f.sp.pisi; andCephalosporium sacchari, before challenge inoculation with the pathogenFusarium udum, or simultaneous inoculation of the seedlings with nonpathogen and pathogen was effective in controlling wilt of pigeon pea to a great extent. Inoculation with the nonpathogens before the challenge inoculation was more effective than simultaneous inoculation and gave up to 81.6% protection. The higher the spore concentration of the nonpathogenic fungi, the better was the degree of protection. The shorter the period was (in the range of 2–7 days) between nonpathogen inoculation and challenge inoculation, the greater was the degree of protection. Injury to the roots resulted in a decrease of the effect. Maximum disease reduction was obtained when the seedlings were kept at 20-30°C before inoculation; at 5°C and also at 40°C, protection was much less.     

Effect of immunotherapy with a saline phenol extract of allogeneic tumour on E-rosette counts in horn cancer-affected cattle

The mean percentage of cells forming rosettes with 2-aminoethyl isothiouronium bromide-treated sheep erythrocytes (EAETRFC) in the peripheral blood of 10 horn cancer-affected cattle (40.05 +/- 2.91) was significantly low in comparison to the value in unaffected control animals (58.61 +/- 1.68). Immunotherapy with a saline phenol extract of allogeneic tumour tissue resulted in a gradual increase in the mean percentage of EAETRFC on each subsequent week. The increase was statistically significant from the second week onwards and on the sixth week, the percentage of EAETRFC in horn cancer affected cattle (56.80 +/- 1.38) closely approximated the value in unaffected controls.     

TREATMENT OF DIAPHRAGMATIC HERNIA IN BUFFALOES

The surgical treatment of diaphragmatic hernia attempted on 19 lactating buffaloes is described. Thirteen cases recovered uneventfully, 1 recovered after developing brisket oedema and 5 died, 3 during surgery and 2 postoperatively. The desired depth of anaesthesia was achieved by the administration of 6% chloral hydrate followed by 5% thiopentone sodium. A postxiphoid approach and the use of a continuous lock stitch suture were preferred to repair the vent in the diaphragm. Pre- and post-operative use of hydrocortisones and fluids and sufficient tissue oxygenation by controlled positive pressure respiration are believed to be keys to the success of the treatment adopted.     

Early body weight of five strains of White Leghorn.

1. The means, standard errors and coefficients of variation for body weight at fortnightly intervals from day 1 to day 90 of five indigenous strains of White Leghorn were estimated. 2. The differences between the strain and body weight were significant at all ages while the differences between sex were significant from day 45. 3. Phenotypic correlations between body weight at day 1 with that of day 30, 60 and 90 were 0-237, -0-007 and -0.07. 4. The heritability by paternal half-sib method ranged from 0-32 to 0-54 for body weights from day 1 to day 90.
